We're just going to have to agree to disagree, because imo your perspective makes zero sense on any level. To begin with a JAG isn't gonna cost less than $5 million, so your only point is wrong. Even if a JAG did cost less, it would mean that he's awful and no one else wanted him, so he would offer nothing. He'd just be wasting a roster spot. Have you paid any attention to QB salaries these days? Secondly, a JAG has NO ceiling. Teddy still has a lot of potential and ceiling and is only 25. Third, I doubt a rookie would beat out Teddy, but even if he did, I'm sure that it would be close unless Teddy just wasn't 100%. Fourth, Teddy would be a better backup than McCown, so McCown should go to #3 on the depth chart. The object of FA and the draft is to make the team better, not cheaper, and at the QB position one especially doesn't seek to go cheap. That's just absurd. The Jets aren't tight up against the cap, so there would be no point in cutting Teddy and looking for a JAG in order to save a few $s. Even if the Jets kept him as a backup and to push the rookie, and signed him long term, they'd have the QB position solved for the next 10-15 years with the rookie and Teddy. Teddy is also a leader and has great character and would be great in the locker room. A JAG would not offer the longevity, stability, or level of play of Teddy. If Teddy was playing well and the rookie beat him out, it probably would mean that he would want to try to start with another team next season. If so, the Jets could either tag him and trade him for a pick or picks, or let him walk and quite possibly get a 3rd round compensatory pick. The JAG offers none of that.
