It's true that Wilson was told he had to compete for the starting job, but we don't know if that was a ploy to get him fired up, or was an actual competition. I suspect the former. But in any case Wilson took it seriously and busted his ass to win the job. keep in mind that that sophomore year he was hurt - coming back from off season shoulder surgery and then breaking his thumb. I think if you factor all that in, what you see is driven competitor with all the tools to make good on his promise. At least that's what I saw when I looked at all that stuff.
I agree with the bold. That game told me more about Wilson that all the other games he played actually. He was NOT the reason they lost, and if not for him, they would've been blown out.
Well said and not only did he win his QB competition battle but he destroyed it. He ended up in 2020 with 33 TD/3 INTs, the 6th highest NCAA QB Rating of All-Time and became BYU's highest NFL draft pick of All-Time (dates back to 99 years ago of 1922). In other words he took the bull by the horns.
One of my favorite Zach Wilson games dates back to his Freshman year (2018) where he threw a no hitter of a perfect QB game. Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. 18/18 (100%). 317 passing yards. 4 TDs/0 INTs. Perfect QB Rating of 323.3 (I've never once ever saw a QB Rating of 323.3 lol).
And na I'm not putting this kid into the HOF. I've never predicted an All-Pro or even a Pro Bowl Selection yet I just know i can't wait to watch him sling the football around.. I just don't find it fair when Jets fans or media points to BYU as the reason why Zach couldn't have played and competed his ass off in bigger conferences when outside of 1 Utah Pac-12 disaster he played really good against SEC Tennessee and 3 Pac 12's teams in Utah, USC and Washington. Could Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech and/or Josh Allen of Wyoming have performed in the SEC? With their rocket arm's, I believe so, so why not Zach Wilson? Multiple NFL writers have claimed only Mahomes, Allen and Herbert currently have this kids natural arm talent.
And two of those posts were in response to @ColoradoContrails one of my favorite posters to talk offseason football with on a message board. But yeah it's the offseason and after 2 years of Adam Gase + 10+ years of no playoffs maybe Zach Wilson just has me a fired up during my unfortunately favorite time of year as a Jets fan?
And you left out the important part. He won that competition and took advantage of it to become one of the top QB prospects in his draft.
You wasted all this time comparing 85 attempts to 319? Nothing here is significant other than 85 to 319. Id bet there wasnt a chance in hell that Romney would win the job, they just wanted Wilson to go out and earn it.
Bingo. I need to be more like you and less like DWC around here. Short and to the point. On a more serious note. What's even wrong with having a QB competition battle where the best man wins to begin with? @ouchy Even the goat Tom Brady has had to battle it out vs. Brian Grecie during a Michigan QB competition while both were playing within a dual QB scheme.
. Zach Wilson @ Utah (Freshman 2018). 20/29 (69.0%). 204 passing yards. 73 rushing yards (5.2 yards per carry). 277 combined offensive yards. 2 TDs/1 INT. 27 Offensive points scored (BYU D = 35). QB Rating of 143.9.
Tom Brady at Michigan was a backup quarterback for his first two years. He beat out Drew Hensen in his 3rd season, they held a competition again to start in year 4. When he enrolled at Michigan, Brady was seventh on the depth chart and he had to struggle to get some playing time. At one point, Brady hired a sports psychologist to help him cope with frustration and anxiety; he even considered transferring to Cal–Berkeley's football program. He wasnt drafted until the 6th round. Anyone care today?
