Jeff Hafley is a dogshit in-game coach everywhere he has ever gone. He was considered the worst coach on the staff when he was at Rutgers as a DB coach. The only reason he has survived in college coaching is because he is a top notch recruiter (specifically of NJ kids). He'd be useless as a pro defensive backs coach; he'd be laughable as a pro head coach.

Hafley is currently the DC for the Packers and is a big reason for their improved D this season.

If it's about keeping the job he has then it doesn't matter what team is calling - the Jets would be just one of 31. But if the guy is not looking to run his own show, why would anyone be calling him at all?

You have no idea why he turned anyone down, only what your imagination tells you. Just like your imagination tells you he wouldn't jump at the chance to create a winner out of the perennial loser Jets.

It's crazy that you guys seem to have him getting fired in a couple of years at the same time you say he's happy working for another coach. What you see as near certainty is pure projection.

Even if Rodgers plans on staying another year, which does not seem likely, why wouldn't a new GM and coach be able to decide for themselves whether he gets gifted the job? Johnson hired Rodgers to sell some season tickets - that sucker pool has dried up. So has the value of the "future HOFer."

The Jets are not a fort anyone wants to hold as they are today. The next group in charge will get carte blanche to do whatever they want and ample time to do it.

You never turned down jobs that you thought would be a shitty situation? I sure have...

There is no such thing as ample time and carte blanche in this league. If you haven’t accomplished anything in 3 years you’re gone. That’s how it is everywhere and most certainly in NY. This team needs 3 years of purging bad contracts and rebuilding the bottom of the roster for depth with fewer draft picks to do it. The GM we hire will have 6 years, but the HC won’t. A guy like Ben Johnson will look at this team for exactly what it is, we’re a team with an overage QB that’s the football equivalent of Mike Tyson in the ring last night and zero pipeline for a future. I honestly think you underestimate how bad the situation is for this team right now. We won’t even sniff playoffs for another 5 seasons. 3 to purge the shit, 2 to start rebuilding. Assuming we do that right (we won’t), we might be a playoff team in 2030.

You serious with this comment? Why would anyone call an amazing OC if he’s not interested in leaving his current job? You’re far removed from the business world I take it. You always take your shot at getting the best available whether they’re interested or not. You have absolutely nothing to lose.

As for why he didn’t take any of the available jobs, feel free to find out in his own words since he literally explained it:

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nf...coaching-jobs-i-like-the-sunshine/ar-BB1nz2Hq

The guy likes where he’s at and the trajectory of his current team vs what’s available.

It’s not complicated and nobody is imagining anything.

i realize the thread is about each posters coaching choice, but the more important call is who will be the GM. The GM will pick the coach, run the draft and so on. Now, WJ has shown loyalty to his GM selections, so a top notch guy might see the Jets as a desirable spot, especially if the Johnsons promise to be hands off. I hear the laughter about now. JD is a goner. There are only 32 GM jobs. The Jets will get someone. I wonder who?

I never approached a job I thought would be shitty, I knew I was better than that. What I also never did was hire anyone who was not eagerly looking to jump in and get their hands dirty to accomplish the task at hand and truly believed they were the one to do it.

The current GM has been around five and a half already and that's too long; he should have been gone in January, at the latest. The coach got a fourth season when he also should have been gone the same time. He was given another year and still could not get a team ready to stay onside and get the snap off before the play clock bottomed out, much less move the football. When the right guy is on board it will be apparent in a lot less than fifty games; the eye test will precede the numbers test.

The Jets are a team without a quarterback - not handcuffed emotionally to a has been whether he is physically present or not. This season was lost before it started; 2025 is the opportunity for the team to slash their player budget and build back a cushion in the salary cap. With the right GM in place that would have started already. Even here on TGG, there is little regard for retaining more than a handful of players on the roster. The new GM and coach will have clear sailing to build their own team. If it would take anyone five years to "sniff playoffs" they are the wrong people!

Other than being clueless about my business experience - you are simply "imagining" whatever fits your argument - your logic fails you. You're the one who said he wouldn't come here because he "already has a great gig" - now you say you call him anyway. Let me make this very clear: once you decide the path you're going to take, you turn over every rock along the way to get down that road. You don't ever accept a "that will never happen" attitude - you make the "impossible" happen! Johnson may have been happy to stay in Detroit another year for the reasons he stated and maybe for some he didn't - that will change one day.

My objection is to those who say that good people won't work for the Jets when I believe that the best would storm Woody's castle to get the job and prove the naysayers wrong. Why would you want anyone else?

Yea you quoted me twice now but I think maybe you’re trying to argue with someone else. I said what I said and backed it up with what the coach actually said. End of story.

Right, but which is it? The guy is happy where he is or you call everybody - you can't have it both ways. Even if you have a five second clip of what he says for public consumption, we know nobody in public life ever fudges things.

First you (really obnoxiously) say I’m imagining what I want him to be thinking or saying. I give you his own words, and now YOU’RE imagining what you think he actually means because “nobody in public life ever fudges things”.

Well played bud. Maybe it’s time for a break.

Maybe this is finally the point where the Jets will be like the blind squirrel and find a nice nut this offseason and actually build a winner. Because I kind of agree. Its almost to the point where everything they have tried for so many years you might as well just fling things against the wall and see if anything sticks. The actual plans have yielded nothing but disappointment.
