Sort of the opposite. Senator Charles Sumner from Massachusetts gave a speech in 1856 that, among other things, ridiculed South Carolina in general and Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina in particular. Preston Brooks, a Congressman from South Carolina (and the nephew of Senator Butler) took offense, and two days later beat Sumner senseless on the floor of the Senate with his cane (Brooks' cane, not Sumner's), taking advantage of the fact that Sumner was trapped under his Senate desk (which was bolted to the floor), continuing to beat him after he was unconscious. Other Senators who tried to help Sumner were held back at gunpoint by Congressman Laurence Keitt (also of South Carolina). Not-so-coincidentally, the reason why Brooks used a cane was because he had been shot in the hip years earlier in a duel, and he also had been thrown out of college right before graduation for threatening police officials with firearms. Shortly afterwards Congressman Anson Burlingame of Massachusetts gave a speech denouncing Brooks as a coward, and Brooks challenged him to a duel. Burlingame accepted, chose rifles as the weapon (he was a crack shot), and set the location as the Canadian side of Niagara Falls (to avoid the ban on dueling in the US). Brooks never showed up, claiming that he wouldn't be safe in crossing "hostile country" (the North) to get there. Brooks survived an expulsion hearing, but resigned from the House anyway, and was fined $300 for assault. He was lauded as a hero back home, and was elected once again to Congress that August to fill the seat he had vacated, but he died in Washington the following January. Sumner took years to recover from his beating (in part because the wounds became infected), but remained in the Senate until he died in 1874. Brooksville, FL, and Brooks County, GA, are named after Brooks. Sumner County, KS, Sumner, IA, Sumner, NE, and Sumner, WA are named after Sumner. Burlingame, CA, and Burlingame, KS, are named after Burlingame.
the only good thing to come from this thread is that i am now aware of that movie. looks pretty sick.
My mom used to tell me about dreams she had. I always somehow would wind up dying in all of them. I think one had me falling off of a roof, and another was a car accident, and I don't know what else. Anyway, she finally stopped sharing these, I assume because she got annoyed that they didn't happen haha. Dreams are not a predictor of the future, or else I'd have died like twenty times by now!
I thought about what it would be called, and I don't think the word "subway" would really apply to it at all.
Guys, I did not make this thread to be a douche or anything like that. The type of dream I had was rare. It has happened only a few times and every single time this "type" of dream happened it came to pass. The last time I had this type of dream the theme was planes crashing into the wtc. I had that dream in 1996 and I told my friends and they all laughed at me. They don't laugh anymore. The difference between these dreams and my normal dreams is simple. In these dreams a angel is with me, holding my right arm and we are above the event and I am being shown "what is to come". It might not be this year because I saw the New Orleans Saints as the Jets opponents and as of right now they ain't going anywhere. If they go on a tear and start winning then you better head to the mountains after the SB.... BTW the Jets won the SB. O and to show that i'm not a loon here is the score of tomorrow nights game. Jets 30 Pats 13 (+/- 3 pts)
