I'm not quick to just fire people if they can be of value somewhere else. I was disappointed last year when there were few if any changes made in the coaching ranks; if Douglas does not demand a wholesale shake up of the coaching staff he is derelict in his duties. I cannot support LaFleur continuing as the play caller but maybe he has talents that can be better utilized in another position if he'll accept a demotion.
JD still needs to invest in an competent offensive line. Fant and Tomlinson were terrible this year. AVT and Becton are young rookies that can't be relied on so early – even though they have huge potential/promise. Drafting Becton instead of Wirfs was a major miss. Just terrible. JD needs to go all O-line I mean almost every round. The defense needs work too (but I think Free agency can handle it) – and if you can run the ball, your defense doesn't have to be on the field for so long. We have a potential great young running back core - we need to fire MLF, and hire a OC who will stick to the run, and not get pass happy.
EDIT :I slept on my choice and I am grading him a D ..for dogsh*T Let be honest: I don't trust him AT ALL ..he lied about fixing OL and together with hiring a poor HC and a bust at QB those are all FIREABLE offenses Again the Giants made the right decisions with Management (decision makers) Woody>> sell the Team or get S Payton ONLY ANSWER imo..I fuck+n hope LaConforta is right!!
I remember watching that pro day. It's obviously impossible to know what was really going on, but it looked to me like the decision had been made to draft Wilson even before the pro day. There was an air of smugness and self-satisfaction and, even worse, box-ticking. When Wilson made 'that' throw everybody basically started smiling and looking like it had proved something. At the time I remember thinking, I hope they don't draft this kid based on that one play. I didn't even think it was that great a throw, and it was in shorts, with no defenders. I remember JD (may have been Saleh, I'm too disheartened to look it up) saying you have to see the ball come out of a QB's hand before you can be sure. Fair enough, see the guy up close and personal, but the pro day is such an artificial environment and Zach has proved that he is unable to function when there are 11 defenders on the field with him. JD looked sure. Given what Zach Wilson is, that is a pretty damning indictment.
Does anyone have a list of all the OL signings/draftees/free agents we have brought in under JDs tenure? We’ve already invested/wasted a lot trying to fix this issue.
I disagree. We need veteran help at offensive line and quarterback who can contribute right away instead of hoping the draft will bail us out. The draft should be used to find guys like Sauce, Wilson, and Hall who create matchup problems for other teams. Reaching for a player to fill an immediate "need" is the path to failure.
Douglas did some good things this year but for the 3rd year in a row the OL was a huge problem that held the team back. If I was Woody I would give him a private playoff mandate for next year and tell him he could make any changes he wanted to in the organizational chart below him but at the end of 2023 if the Jets weren't in the playoffs he'd be fired. And for god sakes enough with the trade ups! This is the NFL and you need all the quality bodies you can muster to last through an 18 week season.
I agree. I’m tired of the trade ups especially on a depleted roster. I can live with the Breece Hall trade up, the Jermaine Johnson one was irresponsible.
Without the Jermaine Johnson trade up the Jets likely just take Breece Hall naturally on the 35. They also make the 38, 101 and 146 since that was the cost of the two trade ups.
I guess I’m rare in that I think JD trended upward this season. During the off-season last year I was pounding tables about how poor a job Douglas was doing. Zach was awful as a rookie and an awful pick from day one. Until this past draft’s class played out and showed to be a very talented group, Douglas’s draft record was every bit as bad as Mac or Idzik. His entire 2020 draft was atrocious. Even Mims. Now that we’ve seen 3 years of Mims you still see the guy catching the ball with his body, jumping in the air for passes he has no need to leave his feet for, and obviously didn’t know the playbook. That’s the kind of shit that arrogant scouts see and think they can easily fix. 2021 netted us Vera-Tucker and a bunch of garbage. Michael Carter is not a very special RB. Elijah Moore is slow in pads, MC2 is pedestrian at best. If 2022’s draft was as bad as those we’d be canning Douglas right now. 2022 bought him time and a chance to rectify the QB situation. Personally I feel we need to sign a competent vet AND draft someone in the first round of either this year or next year’s draft. We should not rush to anoint that draftee the starter, in fact err on the side of caution and sit him too long if they have to.
I'm really hoping JJ can just step in and be Lawsons replacement next year. Right now that trade up looks awful, but I think I can stomach it if JJ could replace or surpass what Lawson has done thus far. It would also save $15m
Sorry .. Out of patience and trust. We needed a good OL since Darnold and he didn't do a good job of drafting a CRUCIAL area Let's keep the talent JD got in the last draft...oh btw his previous 2 were really meh!! Keep the talent ,,but get a new guy in charge How can all of you think the GM and HIS team are "trending upward" ..I just don't see it Douglas has shown me enough to believe , on the contrary , he is far from a great GM ,,especially with getting Saleh and LaFleur But I see most of you here feel he is still Mr Fixit ..lol I have heard that repeatedly over last 3 years
So 2 out of the last 3 years JD has sucked? And now in 2022 "he bought some time" Look at all the faults you jus pointed out in your good Post So you think our GM knows what he's doing? Really ?? Sorry ..I used to be like you
I would prefer replacing Douglas at this point however it bears mentioning that when a GM leaves most of the roster is at risk of being turned over. I guess for the QB, OL and LB's that would be a positive.
Do I think he knows what he’s doing? Yes. Do ai think he’s made an abundance of good decisions? No. Have his more recent decisions been better than prior ones-absolutely. He’s trended upwards, I don’t see how you can deny that. His first draft was a disaster and netted zero useful players. His second draft was nearly a disaster but netted us a star at OG and 2 run of the mill players in the Carter’s. His 3rd draft netted 2 superstars with potential of a 3rd as well as a very solid RT, and 2 DE’s with a ton of upside. So again, my comment stands he is trending up.
Douglas was being propped up as executive of the year when we were 7-4. Now he's a useless turd that needs to go. The truth lies somewhere in between. He does get major demerits for wiffing on Wilson.
I am just disgusted sick and tired JD builds a Roster with some Stars then negates everything by whiffing on an OL (Crucial Piece) and a poor HC But I see your point..roster will be flipped OTOH if the Owner wants S Payton next month it will be some Housecleaning and yeah thats good imo . Say goodbye to Berrios and Stone Hands Corey Davis ha
Do you really think Woody has a little Steve Cohen in him after all these years? He's making money even though the team is a perpetual loser so he really doesn't have to do anything radical. It takes a certain amount of courage (hutzpah) to flush and start over top to bottom. Hess did it when he went all in on Parcells. Could Woody have the courage to go all in on Payton??
