Yanks just picked up Jerry Hairston from the Reds... http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2009/07/ny_yankees_acquire_jerry_hairs.html As their chief rivals in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox, acquired a major offensive force in Indians catcher Victor Martinez, the Yankees were content to make a minor move before Friday's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. The Yankees picked up utility man Jerry Hairston from the Cincinnati Reds for minor league catcher Chase Weems. A right-handed hitter in his 12th major league season, Hairston is batting .254 this season for the Reds, with eight home runs and 27 RBI. He also has seven stolen bases. Hairston will provide depth coming off the bench for the Yankees, and could prove to be a stopgap replacement in the outfield and as a baserunner until Brett Gardner returns from the disabled list. Hairston also plays second base, third base and shortstop in addition to all three outfield positions. Hairston is owed $650,000 for the remainder of the season. Weems, 20, was hitting .260 with a homer and 14 RBIs with Class-A Charleston. He was the Yankees' sixth-round draft pick in 2007. In a separate move, the Reds acquired third baseman Scott Rolen from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. The Red Sox made two trades Friday, as well. The current AL wild card leaders added to an already potent lineup by dealing for Martinez, who is tied for ninth in the AL with 67 RBI, for three pitchers believed to be Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price. For the season, Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs. The team also sent Adam LaRoche, a first baseman acquired last week from the Pittsburgh Pirates, to the Atlanta Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman.
