yeah, no kidding..farnsworth had his first good inning in weeks, 8 pitches..you would think he would let him pitch another inning to get his confidence going
Just one more example of why Joe Torre needs to be sent packing. For what all of his former players deem "the best manager they've ever played for" he does a piss poor job of managing a ballgame. Fine, he respects his players, and only requests that they give their best. But for crying out loud Joe, this is not rocket science. You have a RIDICULOUS and INSURMOUNTABLE lead. Moose should have had one more inning, and Farnsworth should have pitched AT LEAST two. (More if Moose had given up a few in the 7th.)
Not that I'm a fan of Torre's in-game management skills, but I'm in favor of yanking Jeter, Abreu, and A-Rod. I'm also in favor of yanking Farnsworth. He's had soooo many bad outings, that you're better off taking him out after a successful inning, lest he ruin it. The guaranteed confidence built up from one good inning that will sit in his brain for an entire day is worth more than the potential confidence that can be added from possibly having two good innings.
Hmmm, that's a fair point I guess. I don't particularly agree, but if that was Joe's thinking when he pulled him, then I can accept it.
That's not just on Torre. All managers do that. Personally, I think it's dumb, especially with a lead like that, but for some reason, it's taboo to pull your starting catcher for a backup.
So now after all the slumps, shutouts and mediocrity of the first half the Yankees find themselves leading all of baseball in runs scored after just one fantastic week.
Confidence is a delicate thing, what happens in farnsworth pitches another inning and gets lit up? he got him out after he had a successful inning so he'll have positive feelings heading into his next appearance.
That's probably true and I remembered after I posted that Farnsworth said last year he has a problem pitching more then one inning. He has that closer mindset and expends everything in one inning. He can't go into the dugout and come back out again. Sounds silly but there was a lot said about it last year. The good news (I hope). Torre said in his post game comments that he and Farnsworth had a big fight yesterday. Farnsworth said he can't be effecting pitching on days of rest. He has to pitch regularly. Torre said he will be from now on. Sounds like the same conversation Mo has to take to him. Hell, Farnsworth does have great stuff when he can spot it. He showed it last night. That may be the same problem Chamberlain has when he comes up. These guys need to work.
Ramirez or Karstens expected up today. Chamberlain soon "Betemit is expected to join the Yankees today. The Bombers will also add a reliever, with Triple-A righthanders Edwar Ramirez and Jeff Karstens the two leading candidates. Joba Chamberlain, who struck out the side on just 12pitches during his bullpen debut at Triple-A Scranton on Monday, is not a candidate to join the Yankees today, but he figures to be in the mix before too long." Ramirez has an era of 0.57 at Scranton in 19 games. 31 innings/15 hits/2 runs/11 BB/55 SO Karstens only as 2 appearances at Scranton so his stats are meaningless. Wonder if we are bringing up the right one.
Looks like Hal Steinbrenner will be taking over for Swindel which is good as he is as passionate about the team as his father is.
