announcer: baseball is so unique because it has intangibles you can't measure with statistics. Yeah, very unique. Every other sport can be measured entirely with stats.
i call tonight an almost "must win", only because of AJ starting tomorrow. it's easy to call after the play but did you agree with girardi intentionally walking "Big Pop up" to pitch to the next guy who got the run in anyway to make it 2-1?
How the fuck does ESPN put nomah and the fake blood guy in the booth together? Mix that with 20 minutes per pitch and you have Hockey as the number 2 sport in the country.
What a fucking fluke double for Varitek. Give him 1,000 chances and he couldn't make the ball bounce that way again. I feel bad for Hughes, he made a perfect pitch. Just a nice piece of hitting and a freaky hop.
whenever a guy dives head first into first base and is out, you get a lecture from the announcers how the fastest way to get to first is standing up. This time, Pedroia is safe, and the announcers applaud the effort.
Well, it's the only sport where failing 70% of the time is considered to be pretty good. Well, for a couple of those they really got to Reddick.
I was thinking the exact same thing. It's absolutely shocking that nobody on ESPN or YES thought to mention that Pedroia would've been safe by a full step if he had just run through the bag. I still think that the Yanks are winning this game.
Pedroia provided the ultimate example of how stupid diving into first is the last time that the Yanks and Sox played on ESPN, when he tagged first base with his belt buckle and was out on what should've been an infield single. And, of course, Bobby V. went on for a full inning about what an unbelievable hustle play it was
Walking Ortiz in that situation is an absolute no brainer. He's hitting .313 with 28 HR and a .993 OPS and is hitting .472 with 4 HR in his last 10 games. Lowrie is OPSing almost 300 points lower. Walking Ortiz there with first base open is pretty much Baseball 101.
I'm generally opposed to diving in to any base unless it's a pickoff or you're trying to avoid a tag. The injury risk is so much higher for no real benefit.
