I understand that...besides this past year we've made the playoffs with no sweat, however A-rod swallowed his bat once again.
Arod, in his 4 years in NY, had 493 runs, 173 HRs and 513 RBIs. Do you seriously think we make the post season without them? Keep in mind the protection he also provided to everyone batting ahead of him by putting up those numbers too.
That article didn't say he couldn't have an agent. It said that if there were to be a face to face meeting, Boras couldn't be in the room with them.
This is new news. Alex Rodriguez spoke with the Yankees on Wednesday, telling them he wanted to explore whether he could work out a deal to return to New York. Members of the Steinbrenner family and top team officials participated in the discussion, according to a person familiar with the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn't make any announcement. Rodriguez, who opted out of his Yankees contract last month, said he had not yet begun discussions with other teams. Does that mean they met face to face? http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10473213 Another tidbit from another article. Another indication that the Yankees haven't ruled out Rodriguez: They are talking to free agent Mike Lowell not just about replacing Rodriguez at third base, but also about playing first, major-league sources tell Rosenthal. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7446926
lowell playing first? it would hurt the red sox but im not sure how much it would help us, especially since its another big contract to an old guy coming off a career year. plus his numbers will go down without the monster.
I agree and I still don't want him. What I liked about it was that they were looking at him for first and not third. Maybe he could be an improvement over the numbers put up at first last year and maybe not.
Sounds more like they'd bring in Lowell, as insurance against not being able to work something out with ARod, but if they can work it out, they aren't forced to just eat Lowell's salary. And that would be some upper lineup. Damon Jeter Abreu ARod Lowell Matsui Posada Cano Melky That lineup might actually generate MORE runs.
WFAN is indicating that the Yankees and Arod have a deal for 10 years 275 million in place already. Not sure where this is coming from as I just turned it on. Supposedly there is something on Arod's website too (whatever that is). They are also saying that Boras is the big loser in this...hehe. Sterling says on a scale of 0-100 on whether he is coming back it's a 101.
Here it is. "Official statement from Alex Rodriguez regarding the Yankees After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization. Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness. As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. " http://arod.mlb.com/players/rodriguez_alex/index.jsp
Frankly, Mike Lowell, although older, is a better fielding third baseman than A-Rod. Of the two, A-Rod would be the one I'd sooner switch.
Take it for what its worth but A-Rod (.965) had a higher field percentage than Lowell this year (.961). Lowell also had more errors (15) than A-Rod (13)
Sterling called in apparently and said it's done. I can't sit here and 100% believe him though. We'll just have to wait and see.
Here is the website. He basically says that he reached out to the Yankees and that he wants to stay. http://arod.mlb.com/players/rodriguez_alex/index.jsp
The updated article from sportsline: NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez spoke with the Yankees on Wednesday, telling them he wanted to explore whether he could work out a deal to return to New York. Advertisement Members of the Steinbrenner family and top team officials participated in the discussion, according to a person familiar with the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the club didn't make any announcement. Rodriguez, who opted out of his contract last month and became a free agent, said he wanted to talk with the Steinbrenner family before he started discussions with other franchises and that he wanted to remain with the Yankees. It was not immediately known whether the discussion took place in person or by telephone. His agent, Scott Boras, did not participate. The Yankees were approached by a third-party intermediary several days ago who said Rodriguez wanted to speak with the Steinbrenners, and the team at first wondered whether the message was serious. Before Rodriguez terminated his record $252 million, 10-year contract on Oct. 28, Boras told the Yankees they would have to make a $350 million offer to get a meeting with the third baseman. By opting out of the contract, Rodriguez forfeited the $72 million he was guaranteed by the Yankees for 2008-10. In turn, the Rangers were relieved of their obligation to pay New York $21.3 million, a subsidy agreed to as part of the 2004 trade that sent A-Rod to the Yankees. Rodriguez told the Yankees he understood what he would have to do if he wanted to rejoin the team: Make up for the subsidy from Texas that New York lost what he opted out. Before Rodriguez opted out, the Yankees were prepared to make an initial extension offer of four or five years with an average yearly salary of $25 million to $30 million. After he became a free agent, many possible suitors said they weren't interested. The Los Angeles Angels were an exception, saying they'd like to speak with Rodriguez.
I was just about to say that. Even if it was only this year you can't forget that Arod is probably the best SS in baseball and playing 3rd only to keep Jeter at short.
I knew that before I posted, and still I'd post the same comment. But Mike Lowell is one of the better fielding third basemen of the last 30 years. I think even A-Rod himself might admit that Lowell is better defensively. Or. . . wait. . . maybe he wouldn't. It is, after all, A-Rod.
