What are the chances he does it again? That's the difference between somebody like him and Arod. Usually there is always somebody who makes a splash in the WS that is totally unexpected. Look at Lowell, he was the MVP of the WS and Florida forced Boston to take him if they wanted Beckett. Just to get rid of him.

They used their bats it take the pressure off their medicore staff(besides Beckett). beckett only won 1 of 3 in rd 1, 2 of 4 in rd 2 and 1 of 4 in the WS. Their bats got them off to nice leads allowing their pitchers to relax something the Yankee bats haven't done in a long time.

A forumla? no but w/ our medicore staff and suppsoed great lineup it's a formula, it's how LAA won the WS in '02, it's how Boston won this year. We haven't had great pitching in a long time, we have had great lineups- lineups that do not come through in october unlike Boston's.

You pretty much have it, when your best player plays like your worst player it's hard to win.

We scored 101 more runs than Boston during the reg season, what made their lineup great and ours not great? maybe b/c their 2 best hitters are clutch?

brilliant pitching staff? Beckett was the othrs were not, the other had a few nice performancesthnks to the clutch Sox lineup getting them big leads but Schilling had a 5.40 RA against Cle, Matsuzaka had a 5.03 throughout the entire postseason, wakefeld had a 9.64 ERA in the cle series but yeah Boston's pitching was brilliant. It had little to do w/ their lineup cnsistently getting Boston off to big leads. It's amazing how when the Boston bats didn't get off to big leads in games 2-4 against Cle that the Boston pitchers gave up 24 runs and lost all 3 games.

You don't get it, by having their best players it it took the pressure off lesser players. They were led by their best hitters and so are we which is why we haven't hit.

Jeter the last 3 years vs. ARod the last 3 years:

    Jeter: 18-54, .333, 4 doubles, 3 HRs, 7 RBI
    ARod: 4-44, .091, 1 double, 1 HR, 1 RBI

yep jeter hasn't done anything while ARod has been great.

    Giambi the last 3 years:

    10-31, .323, 3 doubles, 1 HR, 4 RBI

It seems as bad as Mr. Giambi was he was still MUCH more productive than the great one.

The difference is we won 4 series and reached 2 world series while w/ ARod we have won ONE series(in 4 years) and haven't been to a WS.

Holy shit...one of the most powerful men on earth was advising him.

"Warren Buffett advised Alex Rodriguez to approach the New York Yankees and go around agent Scott Boras, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. "

"A-Rod really loves being a Yankee," Buffett was quoted as saying. He wouldn't comment on the substance of any discussions with the player.

The two became friends several years ago.

I'll tell you something else too. If Buffet is also advising him financially then this meager 300 million for Arod is like a dollar for you and me.

This is one of those relationships that makes me think to myself, "how in the world did these guys get to be friends, and what in the world do they talk about" (other than the millions and millions of dollars the both have)

Oh shit. That's a helluva friend!

I'd love to see someone NOW say it was him "crawling" back, rather than him WANTING to remain with the club.

Amazing how many sheep we have around here, all ready and willing to believe whatever the Post and Daily News spew out at them, portraying it as "news".

But I'm sure someone will call Buffett a liar, even though there's nothing in his own personal history to show otherwise.

Because it couldn't be that Alex Rodriguez really wants to be a Yankee, could it?

Do you think he would have bypassed his agent if he were offered the $300 Million+ he was looking for from some other team?

You post probably answered your own question.

They are both extremely rich, though obviously Buffett is much further ahead in the game than ARod.

But they probably met/became friends thanks to the fact that both are very philanthropic. Don't mention that too loud though, we'd hate to ruin ARod's reputation as a classless, money-hungry, greed-monger.

I have no reason to think otherwise. Nothing he has said or done has shown otherwise. What Boras has done has shown it, but nothing Alex Rodriguez has said or done has made that argument plausable.

You can speculate all you want, but speculation and assumption don't exactly give you legs to stand on.

Me, I'll continue to listen to what the man says and does. Not to mention the repeated statements by people who have no need/reason to lie, that Alex truly wants to be a Yankee.

Well, first of all no other team would have approached him except through his agent so your post makes no sense at all. Secondly, the contract they settled on wasn't conceived until after he approached the Yankees so again it really makes no sense. The only offer he knew about was the rumored 150 million dollar extension. What he got was something less then that per year but with two additional years added on.

Here's what you probably don't know. His old contract had a built in escalator clause that would have paid him 32 million a year for the last 2 years. The remaining value of the contract was 91 million. The yankees were offering a 5 year/ 150 million extension so the total value would have been 241 million or a little over 30 million a year. What he got in guaranteed money is 275 million for 10 years or 27.5 a year. The difference being the money the Yankees lost from Texas and which he needed to pay back.

?????Becket only had to win 1 game against the Angels -- they swept them, which means two other pitchers shut down the Angels, who didn't score shit in the series.

winning two games in the ALCS isn't anything to dismiss, which means two other mediocre pitchers (Schilling and Dice-K), held Cleveland to two runs only for games 6 and 7 -- yeah, that sounds mediocre.

and again, he only had to win 1 game in the WS because, again, they swept the Rockies, so three other mediocre pitchers beat the Rockies.

I'm not sure if you are trying to diminish Becket, by saying he "only" won one game in the divisional round, as if he was supposed to pitch all three (which can then be projected to your assertions about his performance in the other two rounds, which would be equally absurd), or if you are trying to say the rest of the pitching staff is only mediocre and Becket carried them, which unfortunately, your own assertion contradict. if he only won 1 Against the Angels, two other pitchers in the series did just the same -- that hadly diminishes the quality of the staff. if he "only" won 2 against teh Indian, two others had to win games. and if he "only" won 1 against the Rockies, three other pitchers won games. you see how your assertion actually speaks of the quality of the staff, not their mediocrity?

this wasn't Orel Hersheiser carrying the Dodgers in 88, this was just a great pitcher pitching dominantly in the postseason and winning the majority of his starts -- none of which diminishes him or the rest of the staff.

what exactly was the point of this post, because it seems to contradict the only two things it can mean.

And do you think a couple days into the free agent market all his options were already spent?

Free agents the caliber of Arod usually wait till after Christmas to sign.... Arod did it in a week or so.... that's why the rest of the league was stunned by all of this

And he did it as soon as the Yankees were showing interest in Lowell. He knew where he wanted to play and probably knew if Lowell was signed he had no chance.

It is in the circle that Buffet travels in...pocket change. For example, he is GIVING 30 billion dollars to Bill Gates charitable foundation. Oh, and he passed Gates this year for the title of world's richest man.

Everything Buffet has touched in his life has turned to pure gold. If he is a friend of Arod's and Arod is listening to his advice then he is far richer then any of us know.

For all we know Arod owns a lot of Berkshire Hathaway stock which closed Friday at $136,475 a share.

In Game 6 Boston had 10 runs by the end of the 3rd inning. In game 7 thy had a 3 run lead by the 3rd inning. It wasn't pitching, it was hitting that won them a Championship.

Game 2 was the only game Boston got a well ptiched game outside of beckett. In game 3 they had a 6 run lead by the 3rd, in game 4 they got up early not to mention game 1 when they battered Colorado. he bottom line is Boston's lineup was consistently getting their pitchers nice leads to work w/, it's interesting how when they didn't they lost.

I said beckett was great but he reaso Boston wn was NOT b/c of pitching, it was b/c of their bats. beckett only winning 1 in 2 of the 3 series shows that. Their bats carried them to a Championship. if we gotten same production out of our bats we would have won a W, if we got Boston's pitching w/ our hitting we would NOT have won the WS.

Absolute nonsense as all your posts are. Boston gave up 46 runs in 14 post season games or 3.23 per game. The Yankees gave up 24 in 4 games for 6.0 That's why they won. Period.

Boston scored 105 runs in 14 games for an average of 8 per game. From the last 4 game of the '04 ALCS through the '07 ALDS the Ynkees scored 63 runs in 17 games- 4 runs per game. Do you see the difference? Boston consistently got leads for their pitchers, taking pressure off of them whil our dead bats always put more pressure on our pitchers.

Give our pitchers Boston's lineup an we easily beat Cle and ave a chance to win a WS, give us Boston's pitching and we lose in the ALDS. beckett didn't pitch any better against Cle than pttittedid yet beckett beat Cle twice and ettitte got a no decision.

Boston gave up 4.57 rns per game against Cle while we scored 4 runs per game- how would we beat Cle giving up more runs than we scored?

Boston scored 7.3 runs per game aainst Cleveland, our pitchers gave up 6. 7.3 is better than 6, right? if we had Boston's lineup we beat Cle, if we had Boton's pitchers we still lose to Cle.

We scored 16 runs against Cleveland. If we had Boston's pitching we win. 4 is better then 3.23, right? I choose to use their overall playoff era. The bottom line is we could have throw Igawa out there in games 1 and 4 and he would have probably been better then Wang was. That's why we lost that series.
