All Yankee fans want this card right? http://deadspin.com/sports/baseball/and-heres-our-2007-jeter-card--what-the-fungus-239581.php
You can't see it because the dugout dips below field level, but The Mick is actually getting a BJ from A-Rod in that shot.
Maybe you should have read the part where I specifically stated that I didn't know what the story was. Nice work.
Sorry, I must have missed that in the paragraph long verbal lashing of Cashman and Pavano. I guess I didn't expect that to be in there, and then proceed to bash both men anyway.
I admit I jumped to conclusions, but given Pavano's history, and the fact that I said I only saw the back page, I don't think I was such a stretch to assume it was Pavano being a candyass.
Would that stop him from playing poor D in big spots like he has the past few years? Outside of last year ARod was a pretty good 3B but he made alot of defensive mistakes in big games that hurt us. In the 2005 ALDS ARod killed us at the plate, in the field and on the basepaths. I am saying I don't remember Mattingly ever saying that, as a kid when Donnie and Hernandez were in NY we always had arguments back and forth about who was better, Donnie saying he would move for Keith would have been big news. I'd like to see some proof on that and either way ti makes no sense to replace a GG 1B w/ a GG 1B then to weaken your OF. In meaningless situations just like at the plate the answer is ARod. He's not a pressure player whether it's at the plate or in the field. That's the excuse those who favor ARod will give but I don't think that ahs anything to do w/ it. A guy wins one and all of a sudden he's winning it every year just like Bernie back in the late 90s. I think Jeter is a good defensive SS and always has been but he's not a GG winner but it's snowballed sine the first one. Come on now. That's just mattingly being humble, there was obviously no chance the Mets would ever trade Hernandez to the Yanks. In the nexts entence he sais h didn't get to see him that much, once in a while on TV. He was just being humble and let's not forget he never played in a postseason game until his last year so he was dying for a Championship and would have said or done anything to get one. later Donnie says this:
It's not an excuse, I thought this was something that was fairly obvious to even the most casual observers. Jeter never played with a great athlete who moved to his left as well as A-Rod, and thus could focus on playing closer to the 2B bag. Jeter was a below average defensive SS from 96-03 who had zero GGs, then in 04 a great athlete takes over at 3B allowing Jeter to re-position to make up for his lack of range, and from 04-06 Jeter wins 3 consecutive GGs.
this does make perfect sense to me. We all know, as long as we're being honest that Jeter simply cannot go left. It only stands to reason that with a 3b who can go left, jeter can cheat left. And I think thats exactly what has happened
Mattingly came up as a OF/1b and played LF when he was first called up so it wasnt like he was going to a position he never played before.
Posada was a SS or 2B before the yanks converted him to C, do you want the yanks to move him to SS or 2B? There was a reason he stopped playing in the OF. mattingly made those comments b/c he is a humble guy, there was no cahnce Hernandez was going to be a Yankee in those days and to move Mattingly to LF to bring in keith would have made zero sense.
Did Posada play SS or 2B in the Majors?????? Mattingly did and was pretty good but was needed and was a bit better at fist. His first real season in 83, Mattingly played more games in the OF then at 1B. We're not talking position change in the minors like Mantle, Murcer, Posada and many others. Mattingly was a major league outfielder. http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mattido01.shtml
B/c he played there doesn't mean he was good. You think moving mattingly to LF and putting Hernandez at 1B would be an upgrade? Mattingly was so good offensively they squeezed him into the OF for a year then he took over at 1B, that was not soemthing they wanted to do longterm especially to get a guy who might have been slightly better defensively at 1B.
Actually, I recall at least one game when Piniella put Mattingly in left so Jack Clark could play first and Ken Phelps could DH. I think he made one error, and I don't believe it ever happened again. What I do recall is him saying something to the effect that nothing in his contract guaranteed he'd be playing first. Which was a very professional, captain-like team first attitude, which is what I was alluding to when I made the crack about Jeter at second (at the time I think Cairo was the starter there, not Cano). I do agree with the thinking that, even if Arod is the better SS, the team as a whole is better off with him at 3rd, Jeter at SS and Cano at 2nd. But the theory that he has some divine claim to short for as long as he wants is bullshit. Bullshit, by the way, that has never been directly attributable to him, just the little girls who have posters of him on their walls.
The Met fan fascination with the yankee fans love for Jeter is kind of foolish. Are their lots of "little girls" with Jeter posters ? yes. Are there lots of yankee fans that overrate Jeter? of course. But the bottom line is the guy has won since he got here and has been extremely clutch in the playoffs and as a fan theres every reason to love the guy.Especially since he has been nothing but a professional since he got here. And I am one of the guys who was arguing last week that he perhaps isnt the best captain as far as classic captain traits go....but really, are we all going to have to endure another season of Met fans saying we overrate the guy and he dove into the stands for no reason and all that nonsense????? I see plenty of "little girls" in shea with the reyes jerseys and wright tee-shirts....and I hear plenty of Met fans over blowing thses two guys as well....have they won anything yet? no. but this is what fans do.... I think Met fans should let yankee fans be yankee fans and vise versa....theres plenty of other shit we can all have great arguments over instead of how to be a fan of your team
