Kind of reminds me of when the Rangers brought back Alexei Kovalev.

    Was Jimmy Key unavailable?

Cashman must have been antsy awaiting the results of Gooden's parole hearing.

Real nice. Moose, Pettite, Wang, Johnson and Hughes in 07!
That is a real sweet rotation..

Am I the only one who thinks $16M is WAY too much for Pettitte? And the fact that the option is a player option for next year, also worth $16M. Just bad in my opinion.

i feel the same way. Zito will probably be getting about $16 mill a year, and Pettitte is not as good, or as young as Zito. If he has a bad year, hopefully he will decline the option. I'm still really glad we have him though!

It's a 1 year deal, and the only way he exercises the option is if he's happy and healthy in NY, which would mean him coming back for a 2nd year would also be good for the Yankees. It's 10000000000000000000000000000 times better than giving a 4 year deal to a Lilly or Meche. Besides, $16M to the Yankees is like $10-11M to another team.

Pettitte: 1 year, player option for a 2nd year (one that he will decline if he's unhealthy and wants to go home)

    Zito: 6 years

Two comparable pitchers, the difference is the Yankees got the one that provides them with a better long-term financial situation.

Its just enough time for some of the kids to get used to AAA and then make a run at the rotation in 08.
Between RJ's back, knees and elbow, Pettite's elbow and Moose's arm/back, the kids will get enough spot starts this year to see if they will be ready for next year.

I'm a little skeptical about the money and the option. I know he had a great second half of last season, and the Astros had a pathetic offense, and I know this provides stability for the future, but Andy did have 35 starts last year, and is maybe due for a breakdown. I know one year lessens the risk, but I was hoping for something in the 11 million dollar range.

16 million is too much however Im happy to have him back and would rather him short-term than Zito long-term. Hopefully we bring up Hughes next year and that should give us a good rotation.

I'm a Thompson fan (and this move would unfortunately mean that Bernie might be the 5th OFer), but this is a rumor I hope is true. It is George King reporting, who has the least credibility of any reporter out there, but I'll still hold out hope this is legit. Marte would be a very nice addition to our bullpen, an upgrade over Villone, and would allow us to get a draft pick for Villone. In essence, it would be Marte and a sandwich pick (1st-2nd round) for Villone and KT, a move that anyone would make.

16 mill for damaged goods. I love it, good thing the luxury tax is coming down Cashman LOL!

    Lupica today...

"And, in so many ways, this is a no-brainer for the Yankees. Pettitte fits the profile, a star pitcher past his prime, a younger and equally expensive version of Randy Johnson. In fact, if you consider that Pettitte was pitching in the National League (read: no designated hitter), Johnson had a better season than Pettitte did.

Pettitte was 14-13, over 214 1/3 innings, gave up a whopping 238 hits, had a 4.20 earned-run average. [Randy]Johnson, whose struggles in New York have been well-documented, here and everywhere else, had a record of 17-11, pitched 205 innings, gave up just 194 hits, had an earned-run average of 5.00."

Yes! The seal of approval I was waiting for! The fact that the Mets homer Lupica thinks this is a bad move makes it a definite smart move.

And Cashman never had a plan of cutting the luxury tax for this year. He can't get out of that. Reducing the luxury tax for the long term is what he wants to do, which is why Andy Pettitte is a Yankee for 1 year, instead of Ted Lilly or Gil Meche for 4-5.
