The Yankees own their rights for 6 years. And there is no way the Yankees will let them get away. When I think of "core", I think of players who will are the foundation for the present and the future. Guys like Giambi and Posada are the current "core", but they'll be here for 2 more years at most. Right now, Wang is 26 and the Yankees #1 starter. Cano is 23, the starting 2B, and one of the best pure hitters on the team. I definitely consider them part of the "core".
Cashman didn't want RJ. That was a Steinbrenner/Tampa move. Tampa was in favor of putting all their eggs in the RJ basket, and keeping Bernie in CF. Cashman wanted Pavano (which certainly is a strike against him), and Beltran. Wright was a guy that the scouts in Tampa thought would be a good idea, and the Tampa guys also wanted Weaver traded for Brown. The only two moves that Cashman endorsed were Pavano and Vazquez. Pavano was a mistake, obviously. Vazquez, at the time, was a no brainer. The only way you can blame Cashman for Vazquez is if you want to blame him for not firing Mel Stottlemeyer. Vazquez was an All-Star the first half in 2004. In the second half, his mechanics were all out of whack starting in that Detroit game in July. It took Mel until September to figure out something was wrong, by which time Javy was in a habit that would've taken an entire off-season to fix.
Further confirmation of the Wright to the Orioles trade rumors. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/2010AP_BBO_Free_Agents.html EDIT: Also discussed in Peter Abraham's blog. http://www.lohud.com/blogs/lohudyankees.html
Jaret Wright to the Orioles will probably be announced tomorrow (technically today), according to a source.
Jaret Wright-S- Yankees Nov. 12 - 5:24 am et The Orioles are set to give up Chris Britton in return for Jaret Wright and $4 million of the right-hander's $7 million salary. A terrible move for an organization that still has to be considered one of the worst run in baseball. Britton, whom the Orioles were never especially fond of in part because of his conditioninign issues, had a 3.35 ERA in 53 2/3 innings as a rookie and he's under control for six more years. Wright, on the other hand, is under control by the Yankees for one more day. After that, he'd become a free agent, at which point the Orioles very likely could have signed him for right around the $3 million they're set to spend. Oh yeah, and he's not any good at all. Forget salaries and service time: we'd take Britton over him for 2007 alone. Source: Baltimore Sun
Unbelievable. Do they think that Wright will somehow return to his 2004 form reunited with Mazzone? Sheesh
Thats the only reason why I see this trade happening. Hopefully the other guy wont struggle too much without Mazzone, anyways its still a great trade for us.
Wow, between Cashman and Tannenbaum, I'm having a great time watching my two favorite teams making moves this year.
:rofl2: As an Islanders fan, I feel the pain of O's fans who see their teams run to hell by an incompetent meglomaniac owner. But at the same time--we just got a great young arm for Jaret ****ing Wright. Who was going to be a free agent tomorrow. WTF could Baltimore have been thinking? This is an absolute coup!
Last year Baseball America said Chris Britton had the best control in the entire Baltimore system. He has a good arm, but he has tremendous control. I love how horrible the Orioles front office is. Britton is going to be a very good reliever. 23 years old with a nice fastball, plus curve, plus control. His numbers last year: 53 IP 3.35 ERA 1.17 WHIP .228 total BAA .186 against righties 41 K/17 BB = 2.4/1 ratio FA lefty + Britton + Bruney + Proctor + Farnsworth + Rivera Awesome.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/NASAp...=.jsp&c_id=nyy It's official. I don't know why but I  when I saw what Britton looks like. Is he a "fat" guy? Not that makes him a bad pitcher or anything. I don't know much about him to begin with. Just from this picture, he reminds me of Ponson.
