WW85, I look forward to this year's draft. The prep I did for last year's was intense and the draft was so much fun. Let me know when we have to sign up. As for your draft. It's not the sexiest but it does address needs. It's going to be a weak draft class after Round 3 anyway. People should cut him some slack, we need to start seeing things from multiple angles and we also need to consider the fact that we won't be in the top 3, especially if we continue playing the way we did against the Steelers.
Very nice draft overall WW, too many posters are just focusing on that Rd 1 pick, if they were to take some of those later guys I'd be very content. J Leman is one of my favorite LBs in the class, and would be a stellar ILB in a 34. Martin Rucker is an animal as well. As for the Taylor/Phillips discussion, I wouldn't honestly support the selection of a safety that high, regardless of how good that player might be. X and I always used to have the same discussion, and I started to really switch to that thinking after the past few drafts. I think this staff is capable of finding a quality starter later on, even if it costs a middle round safety pick every year or two. As for Phillips himself, he's definitely a top ten value player. Not sure where the criticism of him being Hit first Coverage later safety came from, in his three years at Miami I never once saw him that way. He's a centerfielder that has a knack for being getting to the play every down. He covers a lot of ground, and when he gets to the play he's able to make the big shots because he just has that ability. He's not an overpowering safety, just a sound hitter. As for Taylor, the critiques of him being a selfish, Roy Williams type have been completely put to bed with his play this season. The reason that the Skins drafted LaRon Landry was so they could keep Taylor back as the deep safety where he can roam and make plays. He's responded in a big way this year, and is becoming one of the best coverage safeties in the game.
GH, hope all is well. Thanks for the comments. I really do expect the Jets to win 3 of their last 5 games (Miami, Cleveland and KC), which will probably put them in 7-9 range. If we don't trade down, which would probably be for the best, who else is available in the 8 range for the Jets? Gholston is a reach at that point, you don' spend single digit draft pick money on a RT. I believe Phillips would be our best option. One thing you didn't mention, Phillips also comes up and supports the run very well. Phillips was one of the bright spots in a lackluster Miami defense. The thing I like about Phillips is that he's very intelligent, you can tell he's a smart football player. I remember him begging the coaching staff to continue playing with a cast on his hand. Remember, over 50% of first rd picks don't measure up ....Kenny isn't going to be one of them and we would have 3/4's of our secondary with Pro-Bowl potential. Now if we we are in a top 5 or better, all bets are off and C Long or McFadden are by far the best options.
Doing a mock draft is so hard right now, I'm glad you did though. Right now I'm not crazy about our first round selection, probably because I think we'll be in the top 5 and players like McFadden & Long will be in play. Anyway, I have always respected your thoughts in regards to the draft, this mock gives me the opportunity to follow some of the 2nd day guys, that I haven't heard about yet. Like Hocker, who I have never heard of before today, he sounds very intriguing. Looking forward to the TGG mock draft as well, that is all that is left to look forward to as far as the Jets are concerned.
Vision..........Hope your part of the Mock again. I found out about Hocker from a Neighbor who lives on my Cul-de-sac, here in Ohio. He knows I love Football and gave me a heads up on Hocker. Hocker is from a small Pittsburgh school, Duquesne, that my neighbor attends. He has raved about this kid saying..." he's a monster" and should be a DiV 1 player. I saw one brief clip of Hocker on the Ohio News Network (local Cable) and he looks like a Randy Moss Type player, with great size. Granted, he's from a small school and weak competition, but he's worth a shot. Also, he has made the top 200 on a few Nationally Ranked draft publications.
GH......................Very sad, we were just discussing Taylor here days before he past away. Such a talent, IMO, Taylor was one of the best players in the NFL.
Where are you getting your information from? Lawrence Jackson is at least 270 and he even weighed more than that his Junior year before he slimmed down for this season. USC ran a hybrid 3-4 last year and Jackson is even seeing some play at DT this year so they can get Everson Griffen in more. I don't think he would have any problem getting his weight up to the 280-290 range if had to.
