Rex is not familiar with the concept of good role players who make up the majority of special teams. Rex needs to spend all his available money on big name players. Westhoff is smart to get out of town before his reputation is ruined.

I agree with Westhoff, I would rather have a great placekicker as well.

That said, a placekicker can get a pass when a coach deems a FG attempt too long or the wind not in his favor. However, when your offense/QB is getting crushed in the shadow of your own endzone down-after-down and the the 'home crowd' is going apeshit with every down and your punter is now looking back to make sure he doesn't step over the endline, 2 yards closer to the LOS than normal and the defense is set up for the block with a 10-man front....well, the punter doesn't get to take a pass on it....moreover, he better get it off, get it off big and with huge hang time since 55+ yards away only gets it to midfield...and often without all the gunners vs. a 10-man rush.

No one notices him until he screws up (TJ Conway anyone?). Westhoff got a hair across his ass and held a personal grudge with Wethersford for a lousy game and as a result had him walk to the Giants. How'd that turn out for Mr. "put it inside the 20"? And we had the modern day Ray Guy, TJ Conley as the answer. Big shank on that one Westy.

That said, agreed with his comments. And glad he didn't take the bait from that fat WFAN whore. Good luck Gimpy and thanks for your time with the Jets.

Oh wow, i always thought Rex was the HC, not the GM..

Now that you've shed light on that fact, i'm sure you are right that Westy is leaving due to Rex. After 10+ years with the Jets, and 4 with Rex, he better move on now b4 people associate him with the team. that could ruin his rep.

I don't think many of us realize the totality what we're losing with Westhoff gone.

He was a righthand man to Rex Ryan... always communicating with him on the sidelines... helping him make decisions... in his head advising him... a real mentor. I'm quite concerned because I don't think RR is as good a sidelines coach without Westhoff standing nearby. Just my opinion.

Ryan's on his own now. He was never the sharpest tack as a GameDay coach to begin with, but now, with Westhoff gone, I have my concerns.

We need a seasoned OC, who should also be the Assistant HC.
a former head coach preferably, who could be a real presence on this team.

Losing Westy is definitely an impact no doubt.
I'm really glad he trained up a protege in Kotwica before leaving though.

    Westhoff always speaks his mind.

Did he mention anywhere how disastrous his special teams were this season? He should have at least mentioned that. Other than that, I have no issue with anything he said.

He mentioned that we had often "come up short" this year. He used the words "disappointed" and "disappointing" quite often. I came away with the feeling that he accepts responsibility for the season but he didn't dwell on it (and Mike didn't push him on it either).

His criticisms of the handling of Tebow, the salary cap, and Sanchez are correct (IMO)

I believe he said Sanchez could be a successful QB in this league given different personnel (or if things had been different with certain personnel). I don't know, I find that hard to buy into... probably becasue my mind is already made up on Sanchez.

    He fits my description.
Was never a good HC, but neither was Norv. Does have good track record as QB coach, OC and Asst HC. Certainly worth a look.

I take that as more of an indictment of the Jets' OC/QB coaches the last few years than Sanchez himself. Sanchez probably is garbage but Westhoff of all people probably realizes how emotionally fragile he is and didn't want to add fuel to the fire.

when someone is paying you you bite your lip. It is called professionalism. Making comments would have caused chaos. Now he is beholden to no one.

Which means he is no better than Tebow.

I think the primary villain sounds like it is Tannenbaum but if you believe-as I do-that Rex made the call on personnel then Tanny was a sacrificial lamb (also an unqualified personnel guy) and Rex should have been held accountable, too. But Woody has a woody for Rex.

Explain to me again how Rex is responsible for bringing in role players and screwing up the cap? Did he sign Mangold, Brickashaw, Revis and Holmes?

Please explain I am all ears?

    He did. Read the article:

" ... plus you still need a very good running game and special teams to complement him. And we lost that, we all lost that."

Lost the running game and special teams...

Glad he brought that stuff out. All you homers, and Jet operatives maybe will see what a shit operation that the 3 have created. Ryan. Woody. Tanny.
We can't get any good candidates because of the mess they have created. All you guys think we are in such good shape should look again.
We can't attract good first tier candidates because how bad we are. Good thing Woody running this team. I can't wait till I'm called to renew my season tickets for 1250.00. That should be a fun day.
