This is a stupid poll. That said, for me it's about production. I couldn't care less if he flips off a bunch of dolphins fans, in fact, I encourage it. So long as the Jets are playing well and Rex seems to be doing a good job I will support him. If the Jets don't consistently do well and Rex appears to be hindering the team I will stop supporting him. Now, if the Jets go 4-12 next season I'm not going to be off the Rex bandwagon, but I will likely be skeptical. I just don't see that happening though, he seems like he's going to be a great coach for us.
Difference between Rex winning and Mangini is Rex has given us the number 1 Defense and proved that he can coach a team with some elite aspect which is something we have never really had.
LMAO at so many people selecting "i would never turn on Rex". I guarantee you guys, if the Jets ever did collapse and go 6-10 next year, a lot of you would definately jump off of the bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, I think Rex is a great coach and I think we are winning a superbowl with him . . . I'm just saying that no coach is infallible, in that, if a coach doesn't win, he gets replaced.
True, but those aren't "fans" as far as I'm concerned. REAL Jets fans won't turn on Rex nearly as quickly as others, because Rex is different. Rex will come right out and say I fucked up and I'll fix it, we won't do that again. Then he'll back it up with actions. Its really hard to turn on a guy like that. He's too genuine. You want to have his back....even the fans do. Case-in-point is the flipping off incident. Fans overwhelmingly had Rex's back. Now, I'd bet that every one of us knows that is inappropriate behavior for a head coach, but we still support him, and in the back of our minds we have no doubt that he won't do it again. Now, a couple of straight poor seasons and that might change, but I'd bet players, coordinators, even Tanny would be blamed before Rex would.......
Ryan has earned my support and my gratitude. I love his style and think the players respond to him. That being said is it impossible that things would happen that would change my present view of him? Of course not.
I wouldn't use the term stupid, but the choices could use some tweaking. I would like one that says "I think Rex is great and I can't anticipate turing on him." That would get my vote.
It's hard for me to say I wouldn't turn on him when he's a likeable coach. If we struggle in the next few years, it's hard to root for any coach simply because he's a bad ass. I want to see production on the field and if a coach with a SB or 2 under his belt is available I'll be on board to get him. Keeping or backing up a bad ass coach with a .500 career record will get us nowhere fast. I want a coach that will win us a SB and I honestly think Rex is the guy to do it. Don't prove me wrong Rex.
It's all about production guys. Rex is a lot of fun and quite likeable if he's on your side, and I get that, but if he doesn't win, the infatuation with him will wear off. I like him as much as everyone else here but let's not lose perspective here.
i'm going on record as saying the bird was tasteless and didn't make us look too good. but Rex is the fucking man, and i feel his passion for this team.
Without a track record of winning over a long period of time, I don't think there's a coach in the league who wouldn't draw the ire of fans. If (a big IF) it's all downhill from here Rex will not make it. I love the guy, and think the team went as far as they did on the back of his fire & leadership. All we need is more of the same and continued smart personell moves (other than Gholston!) and I'm sure he wil be fine.
Exactly. Truth is, I don't think there's a Jets fan alive who doesn't LOVE Rex Ryan, myself included. He's done everything (with one exception) he's said he was going to do when he first took over as HC. He took a slightly above average team, in terms of talent, and molded it into a team that can aggressively compete for, at least, the next couple of seasons. Our defense is stout, our QB position looks to be set for the next 15 years, our O-line is the best in the league, the team is full of talented youth, and we now have a personality that I think many of us have been yearning for for quite some time. But... let's not bull s*** here people - if Rex somehow manages to go even 8-8 for two consecutive seasons, Jets fans will whip out the pitch forks in more than a quick hurry. Why? Because more than anything (cool HC, top defense, maturing QB, etc.) we want to win. Like any other organization, it's SB or bust. So for anyone saying they'd "never" turn on Rex, I have to call bull s***. We all would. The only difference is for some it may take one bad season, while for others it may take ten.
Yea I love Rex as much as anyone but its not hard to imagine people turning on him. He seems like a person who could say or do the wrong thing and completely change our views of him.
This is football, anything could happen next year, but good OR BAD, Rex is like having a fan being the coach. He feels the same like we do. GO REX.....
ummm, no. No one wants to turn Rex on. Seriously, it'll be hard to turn on him. Whatever he does, DC will always be there regardless of how he does as an HC. He loves the Jets, not because he the Jets HC, but because he has been a long time fan of the Jets. He will always do what he percieves to be the best move for the Jets.
I would NEVER have an issue with Rex flipping off fin fans in his private time. I don't care if he is 0-16. When he is off the field he can do what he wants provided it does not hurt anyone else and is within the law.
To be honest, it really depends. In the middle of the 2009 season when we were 4-6, a lot of Jets fans on this site were turning on Rex. I love Rex and think he's a good coach, but with his personality, if we have a terrible year and he is still running his mouth then it will be hard to take him seriously. However, as long as the players are still playing hard and the locker room is in good shape, I will never turn on Rex Ryan
There's not a single person posting in this thread who would not want Rex Ryan booted if the Jets went 4-12 in 2010 and then had a bad year the year after. That's just what it is. Expectations are that the Jets are over the hump now. If they play that way then everybody will be happy, and if they don't the outrage will build. I learned my lesson from Eric Mangini: one season does not a good coach make.
This. Remember Mangenius? "Hey, if he can win with no talent, let's see if we add a few decent players, how he does!" Granted, I don't think Mangini is a terrible coach, but he was killed by his personality. If Ryan goes an injury-riddled 4-12 next year and a choking 9-7 the year after, Rex is still the coach IMO. But if Rex stopped winning, or if it became abundantly clear he couldn't take us to the next level, sure I'd turn on him. We went 9-7 last year. I predicted around 8-8 or 9-7, so he met expectations for the regular season and exceeded them in the post.
