No, Luck was not star before college. Yes he had talent, but Harbaugh helped him grow and that's what the Head coach is supoosed to do. Oh and you left out Alex Smith, nice try. I never once said Kaepernick was a top QB, but he's good enough, and that's all you need to win a SB in the NFL. And Harbaugh would have sure as hell developed Sanchez into something more. Hell, Chip Kelly is about to do this. How can you possibly defend a coach, who has openly admitted he doesn't know crao about offense?
How can I say Rex is as good as a coach as Hardbaugh? They have a lot in common Rex went to back to back title games his first two seasons Just Like Hardbaugh only diffence is The 49ers roster remained intact and got better and ours got progressively worse year after year. Those weren't fluke Playoff wins Rexs first two years he coached his ass off to win those games and he had the talent to get it done until he didnt
So you're just going to ignore the fact that Rex doesn't know crap about offense and that Harbaugh knows both sides of the ball?
Im not saying its the wrong thing to do Im just saying its not how you do things in the NFL these days. Guys simply dont respond to that type of act. I think if he was coaching the Jets right now , we'd still be 1-8 and it would even be more of a shit show cause he wouldnt know how to handle the characters in our locker room either.
I said he benched Smith so I said Alex Smith. Smith is what he is, a game manager, Harbaugh wasnt going to change that. And he didnt. That Sanchez quote is laughable. Chip Kelly is going to? Yeah I guess having a stacked offense around him wont help him at all. Its all the coaching , not the drafting or overall player talent evaluation. Im sure Kelly is just making all these Pro Bowlers look great. And Chip Kelly knows about as much defense as Rex knows offense. Only difference is Kelly has great offensive players and Rex has garbage on D. See a trend here?
Who cares if Smith is a game manager? He was a bust Before Harbaugh and how he's a competent QB. You just can't convince Rex apologists. Once again with Rex Foles would be heading to the XFL, that manman Does NOT know how to develop a Quarterback. The only way Rex will win if he's go to a team with a veteran QB, who needs zero development.
Obviously his knowledge of offense didn't matter much when he won four road playoff games. If you don't realize the roster has been a joke for what seems like half a decade then your missing the point.Every year some one gets fired on this team ,we have had 2 diffrent GMs in Rex tenure,3 diffrent starting QBs the last 2 years,A Tebow trade ,Tony Sparano,No real WRs until the Harvin trade, constant draft headaches,We traded our best player in Revis(most Jets fans wanted this ,great move) Every time we miss on a draft pick we set the franchise back more years. There's bigger problems here then Rex knowing offense ,he knows how offenses work he has to ,to be able to stop them .If you think this is all on Rex then your not seeing things clearly. There's no core on this team no real leadership ,John Idzik isn't making anything any better,he needs to go back to accounting or working at a bank hes great at saving money and nothing else
There are plenty of successful head coaches that run a no bullshit atmosphere in the NFL and they respond to it. Look at Coughlin, Belichick, Cowher when he coached, Jeff Fisher, Mike Tomlin, John Fox, John Harbaugh and to a lesser extent Jim Caldwell and Lovie Smith. None of these coaches have a problem with running a tight ship and calling out their players. It can work both ways as players coaches can succeed too. But to think Harbaugh isn't suited for the NFL because he doesn't suck up to his players is silly. You can't argue with success and his success early in his career is almost unparalleled. The guys a bit of a dick but there have been plenty of coaches like this.
Yeah its a shame the Jets couldn't already give that to him. But I see the Rex haters already have their excuse lined up for when he goes to Atlanta and they become a powerhouse.
Something tells me Harbaugh brings it to another level though. Im not saying "suck up" to your players but dont run a military like locker room. Plus plenty of players over the years didnt respond well to the coaches you mentioned. But they all have solid relationship with their front offices , something Harbaugh reportedly doesnt. That makes a big difference too. And also puts a huge red flag on him that says he's hard to work with.
The point is that we don't have a quarterback in place and Rex needs a quarterback in place that doesn't need to be developed so if he goes to a team with a good player in place it wouldn't be a surprise to see them succeed. We however don't have that in place which is why we need someone who can help to produce a good product out of that position. As far as Harbaugh is concerned we'll have to agree to disagree. I see him going to another team and succeeding regardless of his "military atmosphere." Not everyone is easy to work with in the NFL. Everyone wanted Coughlin's head for being a stickler about being late and then two Super Bowls later they understood it because it means being accountable for your actions. Think back to when you ever played sports. If you goofed off all practice long you went to the next practice and probably ran your ass off for hours. It's the same thing in the NFL when players are getting arrested left and right they're luxuries in the locker room are probably going to be limited.
Developing a QB wasnt the reason Rex was brought in. The guy is a great defensive coach. All he knows is defense He can take an average defense and make them good. He just needs atleast something that resembles an NFL defense. That falls on Idzik for relying on 2 injury prone CB's to last a season and 1 didnt even make it to Week 1. I cant look at Rex and blame him for not developing Sanchez. I blame Tannenbaum for not building a proper offense for Sanchez and for not finding the right guy to run that offense. No coordinator is going to all of the sudden become skilled in both sides of the ball just because a team gives him a shot to be the head coach. He succeeded in the reason he was brought here. Everyone else failed. As for Harbaugh I think he will def catch on..in Michigan.
Regardless of who you blame the head coach becomes accountable at some point in his tenure. There's a reason on our third coordinator we're still the only team in the NFL that hasn't abandoned the wildcat despite the fact it's been a proven failure since a couple of Brad Smith big plays out of it. It's good for a two yard gain and we love to take our quarterbacks out of rhythm by using it regardless of who the offensive coordinator has been. Look at the offense over Rex's tenure and how we routinely take our quarterback out of rhythm after a big play and use this bullshit formation that hasn't worked since 2010. Is Rex not allowed to tell coordinators to abandon it? I'm not saying the head coach has to know both sides of the ball, but he is certainly accountable for poor things that occur on both sides of the ball. Just like continually blitzing against big time quarterbacks this year when he knows he doesn't have the corners to play man to man. Regardless of the personnel your coach has to adjust to what it is. How about the fact that we never have timeouts left at the end of either half primarily to the fact that we always have too many men on the field or not enough men on the field and burn a timeout on defense? I think Rex is a good coach but his time has run out here. We've struggled at the end of multiple games over his tenure because the last 4-5 minutes is cut in half with one or no timeouts left. When your personnel is lacking to some extent good sound coaching decisions like keeping your timeouts because your personnel knows the correct packages and coverages that they're supposed to be in makes a team competitive when they're not supposed to be. He needs a change of scenery and so do the Jets.
I don't understand why Harbaugh will leave the NFL to go back to college. He isn't a failure as an NFL coach, and last time I checked the NFL is the highest level of competition. We need to find a way to package a new GM and Harbaugh that have the same vision in mind. That GM should also be able to hire and fire whomever he wishes.
Harbaugh will go anywhere, he was about to go to Cleveland. He wants control though, 100% control, and the Jets should give it to him.
He isnt going back to college, its all a leverage move on his part. He has reached the point where he is important to the NFL, if he left it would be a loss. Of course the NFL would go on without him but the amount of drama and influence and winning he has brought is priceless. An owner will pay whatever it takes to keep him in the National Football League....
Harbaugh and Kelly walked onto some teams with talent but they also came with college experience, so they know how to find talent. And while they don't know how to run a defense, they the importance of it. Rex wouldn't know a talented college player if bit him in the ass. And he treats the offense like a Publishers Clearing House leaflet. No way Harbaugh is coming h here.
I gather there is more freedom in college. And Harbaugh's no bullshit mindset would work there much easier then it would in the NFL. I think he will get an offer or two from NFL teams but more $$ and more power from Michigan.
Great post.....some comments: (1) Not sure why Harbaugh would think the NFL is not different than college. He was a player, he shouldn't be surprised like Larry Brown quitting the Nuggets/Nets and going to the college ranks each time. (2) I got confused -- I guess Michigan fired the AD ? (3) I don't think Harbaugh can be 'traded' like a player. If he AGREES to it, then maybe SF can get a pick. But he can't be traded without his consent, right ? (4) I guess his alma mater is his dream job, but would they pay him the $$$ ? And does he want to lose his best playes every 2-3 years and then have to recruit again ? And doesn't this guy want to win a SB NOW after getting so close before ?
