Beltran might be the first to go if they are looking to dump payroll and he could still probably net some good prospects. Reyes is probably the second choice although I think they'd be selling low on him. I should have phrased it differently because Santana and Wright are both extremely unlikely now but they should consider it if next year goes as bad as this one. If they decide to sell the team they will definitely hold off on them until the sale is completed or the new people come in.
Reyes's contract is really good, if we trade someone I'd prefer it be Beltran or Santana (I'm against either, though), because we'd net some quality prospects and have more room to worth with, payroll-wise.
Trading away Reyes is really dumb considering what contract he has, and we won't get equal value for him, same with Wright and Beltran in terms of not getting equal value. We have the basics to build around a team but royally fucked up the actual building around the team. The Wilpons are incompetent in terms of knowing if the team is built well and we are years away at minimum to returning if it is possible to even something close to the 2007 team. Just way too many holes and question marks. Minaya values "defense" but then turns around and gives Castillo a 2B with no range at all a terrible contract. He values "pitching" but goes all in into the season with an horribly inconsistent pitcher and pitchers about as good as the shit beneath my shoe and this wasn't the only offseason that he fucked up. It doesn't help things when we who probably have the second most resources in the game at times think like a small market team.
As will the other million Mets fans out there. Trade David Wright?? Trade our future leader and Hall of Famer for what??? Some unproven rookies??
I wasn't looking at the Reyes contract as a premise for trading. I just think in terms of quality of players you'd get back I think he'd be the best. Granted he's not even the best SS in the division but he is certainly explosive and when he scores you are extremely likely to win. I can't imagine Beltran netting the quality of players and the youth you'd get in return for Reyes... I may be wrong on this but I think alot of GM's look at Beltran as a very good but not elite player that had one really amazing postseason and has never really lived up to the money he was given in his contract. As far as the holes they all fall on Omar... the guy took a team that was one game away from probably winning the WS (I'm assuming the Mets would have dispatched the Tigers) to the mediocre team they are today. Everyone knew the Mets needed more than bullpen help to get over the hump. I'm not saying I fault Omar for all the moves because some of the moves seemed like the right thing to do. Perez was decent last and Delgado was amazing the 2nd half of 2008 they both had to be brought back and it exploded. I thought the Mets shoud have done what was needed to get some more help on the bench and in the rotation... nobody thought Tim Redding was the answer and neglecting the corner OF spot for years has hurt this team. I don't know what the answers are but I know where the fault is and it's the guy who is running the franchise. Somebody needs to take his keys away and let him ride the bus because he certainly shouldn't be driving one of the franchises that should be able to given the resources compete if not for teh World Series at least a division title every single season.
