Same with Von Oelhoffen if McGinest is signed...It's pretty much for 1 year to make the transition to a 3-4 easier...They're both old and may have 1 more season left, and that's all we want, 1 year to help teach the younger guys about this new defense...
Don't get me wrong, I see your point, but your coming at this from the Jets POV. Of course I can see why they would seek him out. I am saying that I don't see why Willie will seek the Jets out, outside of a huge deal. And back to my original point, why offer him a huge deal while rebuilding?
i really dont see us being so horrible next year. if our corners hold up we are gonna have a strong defense. and what happens if we put together a decent o line? i wouldnt mind signing willie that would beef up the d nicely.
I do see your point on why would he want to be a Jet, it'll be a below-average team in 06' and he probably wants to play for a contender... Now if he's just seeking a huge deal, then that is definately out of the question if i'm the Jets...
7-9 TOPS...The AFC is once again stacked next season, but what else is new? Even with a great draft the Jets are a 5-7 win team. They won't get embarrased like they did a few games last year, I think they can be in most games, they'll be competitive if that's what you're trying to get at...But not a .500 team.
Hey man, more power to you. I'm not here to take away your hope. But to be honest, you'll have a lot of new players, coaches, systems and schemes. Typically doesn't equal being instantly good. Combine that with Miami's surge and I don't see the Jets contending, but hey, that's just me.
mcginest would be ideal---he would provide leadership, ease the transition to 3-4--and give us a formiddable pass rush which we currently do not have(w/o abe)
Hell yea we cant let him leave without the money on the table for him. We should sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal. He would be great for us in the 3-4. Lets make it happen.
The thing is...I think most people who are optimistis for 2006 just immediately look at Nick Saban's 1st year and assume the transition will go that smoothly and be that sucessful...But their will be bumps on the road, a few for that matter.
Comparing Mangini to Saban is apples and oranges. Saban had coached a lot longer and had head coaching experience. You're getting a guy who IMHO another team will benefit from after he leaves the Jets. He'll work out his Growing Pains in NY minus Mike Seaver.
You know the addition of an aged veteran here and there isn't so bad. I don't understand why people would bitch about a signing like this. Not only does he bring leadership, he brings knowledge of the system, a few superbowl rings and an established relationship with the head coach. Do you honestly think Mangini wants to lose at all? Do you expect him to lose every game? No... Not if he's a true Bellychicken disciple. Signings like this, still give us a chance to win and be competitive as we rebuild. Look at Saban.. did anyone give the Fins a chance at all? Were there any big name free agent signings in the offseason? No, but they acquired some veterans and played their draft picks and younsters... they finished winning 6 straight. Saban, Belly Disciple. Mangini, Belly disciple. These guys want to win. And I don't blame them.
So many players have already gone back and forth between the 2 teams over the years, you could have said that 8 years ago too. lol.
Mangini knows what Willie is still capable of, regardless of his age. He would be a good pickup and could start in place of the bust that is Victor Hobson. Last year McGinest had a great season and did'nt show any signs of his age.
This Hobson I loved at Michigan,,, I don't know what the heck happenned to him. Not half as good in the pros.
