Is there anyone at all who liked this pick at the time they made it? The fact that so many 2025 mocks have the Jets drafting a DE should tell you everything you need to know about the McDonald pick. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Yes and the irony is that Huff was a UDFA the Jets chose not to resign, and Douglas and Saleh spent a top 15 pick on a guy who really can only play 30% of the snaps without being a liability. I mean, if what you think you need is a 1-dimensional player-- Huff was already in hand and pretty reasonable to afford.
afford? He was going for top dollar…the jets would have been stuck with Huff at the amount he’s at now, when you got “Huff” like production for a way less cost.
Eh it’s not though considering a 15th overall draft pick is worse than a short term $15 million/year deal.
This is poor my dude. 1. Nobody likes the pick, ever. The Jets fan base is 2 steps away from total self loathing. But that goes for most fan bases in terms of not liking the pick, but there are seriously Jet fans who still hate picking Darrell Revis because he was an ass hole. 2. There's about 1000 mock drafts out there. I could find probably 5 mocks picking almost every position. I personally have seen maybe one picking DE, more DT. But what does that have to do with Mcdonald? Not an edge coming back from an achilles and a FA who held out half the year? I feel like I'm defending the kid, he was decent this year and I didn't care about the pick (not excited, but not upset). But the Jet fan thought process where everything/one sucks because our team sucks is exhausting.
I know this is some rogue website but it seems pretty true to be. https://section215.com/eagles-coach-confirms-veteran-benched-playoffs-01jhk3w2jn0z Amazing fall from grace. I do believe that Ulbrich was good at putting Huff in a position to succeed.
He made plays, and he performed better than most of the defensive players this year. He had a good year, that's better than I can say for most of the team.
More statistics backing up what we already know from watching the games: WMD is a liability against the run. I think it’s clear that we need to draft a more well-rounded defensive end in the middle rounds. https://jetsxfactor.com/2025/03/22/ny-jets-film-session-will-mcdonald-run-defense/
He’s even more of a liability against the run for our defense because he and Sauce line up on the offensive right more often than not. That’s a nightmare pairing against a sweep or off tackle run. It should get a little bit better when we convert to man defense. Sauce should end up with a lot less run support responsibilities.
Its unfortunate that WMD was forced into a full time role, he was suppose to be solely a 3rd down pass rush specialist but injuries and overall ineffectiveness from the other EDGE rushers forced him into a full time role. With that said, he has to improve on that part of his game. The jets really had WMD, Clemons and Kinlaw, likely 3 awful DL trying to stop the run, then we wonder why they were so bad lol
Joe Douglas drafts a part time specialist in the 1st round. Sounds about right, thank goodness he was fired
McDonald has always been a 3rd down pass rusher at best. A huge reach by Douglas. !5th overall? Give me a break. And then, as a rookie, he was a healthy scratch early in the reason. When was the last time a non-QB 15th overall pick was a healthy scratch as a rookie? Douglas was as dumb as Mike McMoron.
We have an unfortunate history of healthy first round scratches lol. But I agree - it’s gross to have those. Healthy first round pick scratches are generally reserved for playoff teams that take some cracks late in round one for big upside players.
Sherwood is also culpable for a bad run game, he is incapable of stepping into the gap and stop the RB before he’s past LOS. Personally this move soured me, Jets extending Sherwood like he is on the verge of becoming an all pro LB. This is where just looking at numbers don’t tell the story, on paper he is in on a lot of tackles, however they are meaningless when the RB has gained 5 yards before Sherwood tackles him. I’m looking forward to seeing how Glenn and Steve Wilks use McDonald, they may get a lot more from him than the previous CS did.
The reason Sherwood had so many tackles is because Douglas /Saleh foolishly traded Franklin Myers and installed McDonald and Kinlaw on the defensive line. Those two guys provide nothing in run support.
A healthy Jermaine Johnson makes Will McDonald the player he should be. I really wish we signed another pass rusher because beyond the two of them we have no one. And even less talent stopping the run. We're in for a rough one but it's not going to be because we overrate Will McDonald.
Crazy enough there were a few folks on the board, who celebrated the pick saying you can never have enough pass rushers. Now, I know there is a saying like that, but that does not mean you invest a top 13 pick in a situational pass rusher. especially when you already have one on the roster you could have extended for dirt cheap at the time. It was a very small minority though who felt that way. Unfortunately JD was one of them.
I mean in no way, shape or form is it bad to have a guy on your roster that put up double digit sacks on a rookie deal as the team's only competent pass rusher under a terrible staff.
