Schefter just said that Revis's comments mean he is going to hold out..the fact that the Jets wouldn't discuss it last week means they know he is going to hold out...take all that for what it's worth.
I understand your point, and it is entirely possible to make the argument about any position in the game, including Qb, that the top player, or top five, at the position might presently be obtaining a salary that cannot be justified in terms of production compared to those in the tier below him. It is also true as I believe the general principle is implied here that, except for some minor points of emphasis, not the least includes that your #1cb is more valuable than your #2, but also that NT in a 3-4, MLB in a 3-4, are relatively important positions, but that overall you want BALANCE through your defensive roster. There remain the following problems with your post: Man coverage. Although you begin by acknowledging that having a cb that cover an opponent's #1 receiver in man coverage has value because it does not require another defender to help cover that receiver, the rest of your analysis leaves this out. Teams that have that ability have ten other defenders available. Teams that do not have nine. Teams that do not must use coverages that are more easily exploited, and give the DC less options. I must therefore also disagree that Revis does not make the rest of the secondary better. Perhaps not better as players, of course, but it limits their needs to cover more of the opponent's players. Related to that is that while it is true that spread offenses can send out five receivers, those receivers are not all fungible, of equal talent. It is not a simple matter of taking that number, dividing it by five and subtracting one. Let's put it this way - your safety may be lousy at covering TE's running crossing patterns. But he won't be there at all if he's backing up your cb double covering your opponent's #1 wideout. I concede the spread O MINIMIZES the effect of a shut down corner, but it does not eliminate it. But the spread O also requires a Qb who can run it, and OL who can provide adequate pass blocking, and it takes away the power running play. We may see more of it than we used to, but the stats in fact show that teams run more against the Jets than against most teams. Against the league, the presence of Revis means the Jets face less pass attempts than otherwise. In other words it is not simply a matter of attacking teams with strong cb's with a spread, passing Offense.
As for the issue of balance, while it is a worthwhile goal, it is not for nothing that EVERY D in the league as its strengths and minuses. Even the issue of bench strength will affect balance. D's will also optimally balance against the O. How much of your cap space goes to D as compared to O? While overall balance is an ideal, imo there is no standard formula for coming up with balance.
With his recent comments, I would trade him to any team for a first this and next year. Including his rookie contract he is on pace to hold out every 2 years. Enough is enough.
BB - All outstanding points. I think the key for me is the nuance in what I personally see as greater value for the team and from a salary cap standpoint. I just don't see the force multiplier effect that a great CB presents when compared to the disruption by a great DE/OLB. If the Jets can add a 3-4 OLB pass rusher in the draft, Revis' production value (as well the rest of the secondary and defense) will sky-rocket in my opinion. More importantly, although safeties are needed to counter the TE, the OLB moreso than the shutdown CB can mitigate that more effectively. If the QB is on his back, hurried or the timing of the pattern disrupted by the pass rush, that is a far greater impact than the schematic advantages provided by the shutdown CB. The one thing that I would add reference the need for balance is that the Jets have strong corners and for the purposes of their 3-4 scheme, a strong d-line. The problem is that they have way too much salcap tied up in LBs not producing and safeties that can't counter Belichicken's TEs. Winning the division is extremely important and the Jets need to construct a team that can not only beat the Patriots but win the division. To date they have not accomplished that. Is that all on Revis? No, but it certainly isn't helped by the salcap resources that they have devoted to the position without the return. Revis is the ultimate weapon to stop the Patriots offense of 2006-early 2010, not the Patriots offense that evolved in from late 2010-present. Even with the Revis at the top of his game, the Jets have only managed to win 9, 9, 11 and 8 games the past 4 seasons. He simply can't push the team over the hump to get to to that 12 win stratosphere necessary to win the division. I understand that is also a by-product of QB play, but the reality is what it is. The Giants beat both versions of the Patriots offense in the Super Bowl the same way - through a front end pass rush. They didn't do it through back end pass coverage.
Great point! The Giants have no CB even close to Mevis and won a SB or two. If we can get a couple of high draft picks for Mevis, I'd be all for it. The guy will be destructive in the clubhouse if he does holdout again. Its time to trade him to Minnesota for their #1 and a 3 next year! We take TR at 3 and then a passrusher at 16.
Kleck, As I said earlier, the busted Gholston pick has left a big hole in the team. I don't think the Jet problems over the last four years have been mostly on the defensive side of the ball, though. Even the drop off in points allowed last year was mostly on the O for turnovers, and poor field position. The Giants not only beat the Pats with the kind of D they have. They also have a much better Qb and, last year anyway, much better receivers, and a somewhat better set of RB's. A better O for sure. It was fun talking today. Thanks for your posts.
That's pretty much my feeling at this point. All of us love Revis and what he does on a weekly basis. He's the best combination of cover and tackler at CB that I've ever seen, but, along with those amazing skills comes a guy that is all about 1 thing, money. And that's fine, he's entitled to his feelings, but this holdout concept is now the norm and not the exception. See if the value is there to deal him and if it is, do it, while his value is high.
Bingo! This was one of my point when I started this thread, dare I say genius thread? I get this is a passing league now, but to have so much $ tied up in our CB's is ridiculous. Furthermore, other teams will have leverage when Revis hold out and we have to either pay him or trade him. I wish to hell we would trade him to Cleveland this year or get an additional 1 for the next two years from a team...
to me, revis is the really the face of the franchise. i'm the only jets fan out of my friend group and they only have respect for revis. if he leaves, we have no super star on our team. adrian peterson doesn't win his team games clearly, but if he was on my team i wouldn't trade him. i also believe revis can be a game changer. does anyone remember the afc championship game against the colts? he took reggie wayne out of the game and that was crucial (even though we lost in the end). revis might be asking for a lot of money and yeah its kinda fucked up that he's doing it. but i really do believe revis will go down as one of the best jets in history and im not willing to trade him because of that. also, you guys should stop saying that pass rushing would be more important that revis. the vikings and cowboys both have extremely good pass rush, but both of them failed to make the playoffs.
Champ Bailey with the Broncos his first two years. Champ Bailey with the Broncos since then. You're looking at Darrelle Revis' future there. You can't spend huge dollars at Cb and compete in the NFL these days. Not unless the CB is the last piece of the puzzle and even then you're not likely to hit the top end.
If he holds out again, fuck him. Trade his ass for whatever we can get, and move on. He is only a Cornerback, albeit the best ever, but only a cornerback never the less. I have his jersey, but I will burn it if he holds out.
He says he isn't sure if he will hold out again, and is enough for me. Should have just said, no I am not holding out again. The Jets have shown me some love, and I will give this team everything in return. I will piss on his jersey after I burn it, and I will video tape the whole thing, and send it to him.
I could care less about superstars. I want a superbowl. Revis is not the face of the Jets, he is the face of Revis. Most people are blinded by his talents and fail to realize he is nothing more than a mercenary. There is no way he retires a Jet. Zero chance. The Colts beat us even though we took Wayne out of the game. I think that's the point many here are trying to make. Teams seem perfectly comfortable playing 10 on 10 against us now. Revis takes 1 guy out of the game. An elite pass rush takes half the offense out of the game. Don't get me wrong, if Revis wasn't a selfish asshole I'd love to keep him. But to hold out 2 years into 4 year deals... TWICE... is completely absurd. If he does it this year (assuming we can't trade him). I would let him sit out for the remaining years of his contract with no paycheck and recoup the prorated portion of his signing bonus. Then I'd slap the franchise tag on him for a year. Let's see what he can get on the open market in 2015.
If Revis holds out this year he doesn't hit the free market until either 2016 0r 2017 and the Jets will still have the right to the franchise tag at that point. All the talk is pretty useless at this point though. The Jets have no way to fix this one way or the other the way they did two years ago. Everybody is going to have to wait until 2013 for that. By then we'll have another year of data on the value of the best CB on earth. Unfortunately so will everybody else.
Thank you thank you thank you. At least not everyone has jumped on this ridiculous ''fuck Revis'' bandwagon. According to ESPN's power rankings (I know, they're not the be-all-end-all but it works for the point of this post) the top 5 passrushers of 2011 were 1. D. Ware , 2. C. Matthews, 3. D. Freeney, 4. J. Allen, 5. T. Hali. So out of the top 5 guys only 1 even made it to the playoffs. How far did Mario Williams get? Just because the Jets are in need of a serious passrusher doesn't mean it will magically make them Super Bowl champs for the next decade. It's about building a team, not having one guy who's going to win every game for you. Revis may be expensive, but people are going WAY overboard with the hate. He's out to get paid as much as possible just like every other NFL star out there. Stop pretending that there are other superstars out there who are taking lesser contracts so they can stay loyal to their team or their fans - that's just not the way it goes unfortunately. For those that think dumping Revis is such a great idea, lets see how you enjoy watching our secondary get torn up without him if he does get traded. Then all of a sudden people will be calling for our star passrusher to be shopped so we can pay for better CBs. And around and around it goes... Revis is one of the most talented guys to ever don the green and white. Unless it's just completely untenable to keep him on the team, you do not let him go.
