Chad Pennington hands down. If you want to win in 2008 go with the proven leader and the proven winner. If you don't then go ahead and find out what you have in Kellen. Either way, there should still be competition in camp, but Pennington will win and will lead us into the playoffs in 2008
The shocking thing to me is how unbelievably CRIMINALLY overrated Pennington is. It is unreal. Chad was below bad last year, and was so incredibly awful he LOST HIS JOB! And yet a lot of people think he is still a playoff caliber QB. What the hell? There is just nothing to point to a turnaround by Chad. Nothing. But for some reason no matter how many floaters get the WRs killed, no matter how many pick 6's he throws, no matter how totally and utterly ineffective his is in the red zone, some fans just think he can do no wrong, and every floater, pick 6 and failed drive was the result of some outside influence completely outside of Pennington's control. Unbelievable.
Quote: "...The shocking thing to me is how unbelievably CRIMINALLY overrated Pennington is. It is unreal. Chad was below bad last year, and was so incredibly awful he LOST HIS JOB!..." Chad's play was directly attributable to abominable OL play. He was injured with a high ankle sprain early on and yet he continued to try and play through it. You have to take into account the QB cannot function when he is attacked before he can set up. You have to recognize that when the running game is obliterated early on, the passing game becomes severely limited in routes that can reach the breakout within the time the DL allows the QB -- in this case about 1.8 seconds. Only the shorter routes were generally available in the time available, and by the second quarter the DBs had been instructed to jump these routes. Neither QB had a chance all year because of this pattern that repeated itself, over and over. You're judgment of Chad's play is therefore fatally flawed, and cannot be taken seriously, in my view.
It is unreal how overrated he is. In 2006 he had 16 Ints and 17 T/D! Last year it was a disaster. If he starts in Sept I want him to play all the games. I don't care how many he loses or blows he has to finally go 4-12 for yet another season for the fans to get that he is done. If Tangini has to fall on the sword because of it so be it. If they start him again they don't deserve to run an organization.
All you are doing is ONCE AGAIN making me point: bad play by Pennington is NEVER his fault. But somehow those excuses never apply to Clemens as well. Pennington caused some of his own problems too by not being able to stretch the field. Oh wait that's not his fault either, he is a gladiator to keep playing with a twice repaired arm that is dead. But please, keep blamimg everything else for Pennington's problems and ignoring his obvious limitations and detoriation on the field.
Quote: "...Pennington caused some of his own problems too by not being able to stretch the field...." Now, Johnnysd, this is simply not true. In the first few plays in the first series of an early game -- before the defense had completely mauled the OL, Chad hit Coles down the middle with a 50 yard TD strike. No matter how fast the wideout may be, it still takes time to break open down the field. When the QB is not given any time to wait for the pass route to develop (it's not instantaneous in real football the way it "seems" in Madden, by the way), then the long pass is not there for the QB to survive the smashed mouth that happens about 1.8 seconds after the ball is snapped, in the case of QBs dependent on the NYJ's 2007 OL. You and others with similar lack of understanding seem to think that the NYJ CS is myopic and stupid enough not to notice that Chad's throwing is a mangled whisper of what it used to be. I would say again that this CS sees a lot more of these QBs and their work than we do. Also they continue to put in a lot of diligent time and effort to make sure of what they see and think about it. If they believe Chad can make all the throws, and that Kellen can also make all the throws sufficiently to justify a competition between the two, then why would you argue with that? If the best man wins coming out of that competition, it can only improve the team, and win the support of all the players who watched this victory happen on the field, play by play. In the meantime, you seem to trust your "mind's eye" more than you have faith in the NYJ CS. If this is true, then you are going to have a miserable off season. On the other hand, I plan to have fun watching to see what happens.
I never understood this. Pennington had a bad offensive line, that's why he played badly! Clemens didn't do anything last year, so we need to start Pennington. What? Clemens had the same offensive line! Pennington's forte has always been his decision making. Last season, he had the same happy feet that Clemens did (if not worse at times) and made poor decisions. His fades were horribly inaccurate and no matter how physical our receivers were, they couldn't fight for those sorry excuses for passes. Kellen knew when to throw the ball away and while he needs to work on his scrambling (often just made a B-line for the line of scrimmage, despite defenders blocking his path), it is still better than Pennington's complete lack of mobility.
How about Wayne Chrebet? Everyone loves him. Granted he might have to jump up to see over the Oline, but that shouldn't be a problem. He can wear really really thick sneakers. Chrebet for QB!!!
I think I can get on board with that. Our depth chart at QB should be: Chrebet B-rad Smith Gholston Keller should be a backup option, in case anyone goes down. He can also take over the punting duties. True Mangini guys are versatile!
Read my post a couple before that. I do not buy the Pennington excuses AT ALL, and when I said that no matter what Pennington does his fans have some reason why he is not to blame, the VERY FIRST RESPONSE was that opinion was invalid because he played behind a bad OL. It is just ridiculous how overrated he is and how his fanbase will give him a pass no matter how bad his play is and will ALWAYS have an excuse "if he had a line" "if he had an elite RB" if one the FG attempts against Pitts......blah, blah, blah
First of all, one bomb in a season does not create a situation that warrants a defense to respect it and keeps the safeties deep stretching the field. It is the only deep pass Chad can throw and the opposing teams know it. Chad CANNOT throw the medium out. Chad CANNOT throw the deep out. He CANNOT throw a deep post. He CAN throw a very lofted bomb on a go pattern. That does not stretch the field.
Kellen went 3-4 and should have been 4-3 because we should have won the Redskin Game. Chad went 1-8 and his only win was against the Mighty Dolphins. Kellen was a first time starter and Chad is supposed to be the smartest Qb to ever step on a football field. Kellen had Wallace Wright and Brad smith as his receivers in a few games. Give me a break. Plus Kellen did not get to play against the Bengals and Bills Twice! That Cs did everything humanly possible to let Chad start and he put himself on the bench by his own horrible play! If he starts this year they should let him play the whole 16 games so the Pennington era can end and us fans who actually want a Qb who can throw a ten yard out don't have to suffer anymore!!!!!
I don't care whether Kellen or Chad wins the competition. I believe in the NYJ CS and their FO as well. What they've done since they came in here is pretty damned terrific in my book. Now if they frustrate you guys, then you're just going to have a bad time of it this off season, because nothing's going to happen with the NYJs that they don't buy off on. I've seen the same games that you guys have for 39 years since Namath did the thing. But I feel good about this regime. Only Parcells has done this well for the NYJs, in my opinion. If Mangini and co. stick to their current focus, this team is going places. I don't know who the QB will be, and frankly, I don't give a damn. What matters is that the team as a whole gets better, more ferocious, and starts eating victories for breakfast, lunch, and supper every day they're in there. It is the team that matters, in my view, not the resumes. If you took the measure of the NYGs this year -- you would have to say they came out of nowhere and became one united anvil that broke up the "world's best" in the most important game of the year. 11 straight victories on the road. Who gives a damn who the MVP was? Man, that was a team!
I couldn't have said it better. I can't believe Coles sticks up for him after a couple of those hits he took because of Chad's weak a$$ floaters. With CP or KC at starting QB we will be lucky to get 6 wins, and that is only beacuse of the improved defense. We will still have the most boring offense in the NFL.
Actually he went 1-4 and the one win was Miami the same team Pennington beat. Big whoop. The defense beat Pitt and Edwards through the game because he was smart enough to know the draft pick meant more than a meaningless win. If he was even the slightest bit good he would have beaten NE when the defense held them to their lowest point total of the year (by a lot). Oh, and BTW if you didn't know this already that's why he wasn't named the starter for this year and why there is a competition.
Coles and Chad are best friends, thats why they'll stick up for each other. The offense will be like 06- not great but a little exciting due to Schotty's schemes. The time to throw and a running game will be prevalent, finally. Keller should be fun to watch even in his 1st year. I expect C & C to have years similar to 06, where they were the 4th best tandem in the AFC. Regardless of who is throwing the ball. I'd like to see what KC has. I know what I'm getting with CP. It's time to let go of the old and see what is in the unknown.
I am sick of watching DB's just waiting to jump on Chad's passes to the sideline all game, and then in the 4th quarter, on the final drive, Chad floats one out there turning into a pick six. give Kellen another season, with a real O-line, running game and a D that can also take some pressure off a young QB, then we need to draw our conclusions
Thats my #1 reason for change. Chad has crushed my wishes for that 4th qtr comeback, or "nail in the coffin" drive, only to watch the game be over in defeat due to a CB running an INT back for a TD. Chad is like the girl who says she's coming back to you again and again, only to see someone else win just before you do.... how many times can you take that?
