I love Cotchery, but I've been a little disappointed in his production so far this season. He's reliable, but if u can't produce, your reliability goes to waste. Braylon has played really well this year. I don't think he has a single drop so far and that's saying a lot. When Sanchez threw to him when he beat McKelvin badly for a TD, I was think the face mask pass. But Braylon was calm and has been the last few weeks when catching. Lets hope he's calm off the field as well. Santonio will be huge for the passing game. He also has more off the field issues than Braylon. Its a tough decision, but I hope we keep all three. If I had to part ways with either, I may be in the minority, but I would let Cotchery go. And that would be a very tough decision.
Its a testament to how well Edwards has been playing to date that he is certainly in the mix for this - after HK and before the season started I think most people would've had him pegged as the odd man out for certain.
This is not common. Most teams don't have corners that can completely shutdown a WR. Revis is an oddity & except for maybe the Raiders, nobody else has a shutdown CB. What normally happens is that you take your best CB & put him on the team's best WR & still you might send over safetly.
There's no commonly accepted practice on coverage assignments that I can see. Some teams keep their corners strictly left and right with the LCB covering whoever happens to be on his side. This would be the Raiders with Asomugha and the Eagles with Samuel. Some teams have their best corner shadow the other team's best receiver. This would be the Jets with Revis and the Broncos with Bailey. So far, for whatever reason, Cotchery has drawn the better cover guy. Sanchez is smart and he's throwing to the places where he has a clear mismatch. This has cut down Cotchery's opportunities a lot in the first quarter of the season. When Holmes comes back he'll draw that guy no questions asked. That will open up opportunities for Cotchery underneath. Edwards will still be in the same position he's been in for the first 4 games, matched up against the other team's #2 with some safety help deep. I think the Jets are going to be just brutal in that configuration. Hopefully it doesn't cause them to over-extend in the passing game. They're going to win a Super Bowl based on a top 5 rushing attack, a hyper-efficient QB running the show and a strong defense. That's the plan that will work. It's kind of creepy but the team the Jets remind me of a lot right now are the early 70's Dolphins, with Griese running the show a few good backs grinding it out and a lot of receiving options to spread out the defense when they decide to pass. There are differences based on the era but the feel is the same.
Yes, Edwards...it appears can't catch the big game catch. Now, I really wasn't a big fan to begin with, but he dropped a drive killing pass, then looked as if he gave up on another. I'd rather have Holmes, who is more of a playmaker, and Cotch, who is usually a clutch player... Edwards can leave...
Holmes has to be retained....and hopefully...we'll get an OC that knows how to use Holmes' skillset properly.
I definitely agree with this. I meant more about Edwards. Trying to divroce myself from the emotion of the game, but there were a few times where the announcers said "bad throws" but all I kept thinking was this fucker should have caught them. And he seems to have disappeared of late, or is that just in my head?
speaking of Holmes, hes getting blasted by ESPN NY radio right now. Basically, they are tired of his taunt after a first down.
meh... i'm not a big fan of it either, but it's not a big deal for me. he does it for all first downs and he's consistent about it... i thought he was the semi-bright spot in the game if there was one...
I want all 3 but as hard as it would be I would go Cotch and Santonio b/c he is sucha big play threat but I'd hate losing the big target and deep threat that Braylon is. I think we'll keep 2 of the following 3: Braylon, Cromartie and Holmes. if it was up to me I keep Braylon and Holmes.
It is a little annoying getting slaughtered and he's doing that silly 1st down dropping the ball thing he does.
He was trying to get the team fired up and actually show some life. I love the competitiveness in Holmes.
And make Wilson our 2nd corner? No way. That would be a disaster, unless we pick up another FA corner. And if we are to pick up another FA corner, why not just retain Cromartie then? It is looking more and more likely that Cro will be a Jet next year, unless he wants $15mil a yr or something. Slap him the tender. Slap Holmes the tender too, if possible.
we have the best corner in the game, that's a good start. Wilson will be ready soon enough and if he's not we have other options. We'd let Cromartie go if he wants too much money.
We need to make the decision on Cromartie before finding out if Wilson is ready to go or not. So far he hasn't shown anything. I hope he improves, but I haven't seen anything to where we can feel safe going in to 2011 with Revis and Wilson as our starting corners. Only way Cro leaves is if he asks for shitloads of money.
