The league seemed to think otherwise. It was leading with the helmet to the face of a defenseless WR. That's a penalty to the letter of the law.
Eh who cares is the answer, they both have a terrible group of WRs and should be the focus of upgrade for both teams. Unfortunately for the Jets they have other areas of the O in dire need of upgrading while the Giants are in pretty good shape throughout the rest of their team.
I really like our wide receiver situation right now. I really, really like it. Everyone of our guys has had to bite, scratch and claw for a position on this team. Cotchery had to work his way up past McCareins and Chrebet. Clowney had to bust his ass to see the field. Stuckey was a rookie IR who had to fight to get on the field. Smith was a college quarterback who threw himself into learning a new position. Wright is a special teams guy who has worked exceptionally hard in that role. I don't know much about Henry, but if he's gonna get off the practice squad, he'll need to follow suit. Are our wide receiver corps the best in the league? No. But I would say we have the best wide receiver work ethic and team focus in the league, without a doubt.
The Jets, by virtue of having the best single player in the group. If the Giants add a player like Boldin, it'll swing back in their direction.
^yeah, Cotchery's pretty much all we have to go on, though I liked Hixon in his limited action. The rest are unproven, which is why I've avoided giving a definitive answer for this thread.
I don't agree with that totally. Cotchery is the best WR in NYC right now, no question about that. But he's not an elite WR and I don't think he is light years better than Steve Smith. I think Hixon is the one that makes things swing in the Giants favor because the skill difference between Hixon & Stuckey is larger than the difference between Cotchery & Smith.
Hixon didn't do all that much more than Stuckey did last season, considering his bigger role in the offense. I'd say it's too early to call that race for Hixon.
I would say that being put into a starting role and having to face double coverage made Hixon's role that much harder to fulfill. Stuckey worked the slot the majority of the time and Hixon found himself as a the #1 option and facing the best DBs the opposing defense could bring.
I hadn't considered that well-articulated point. Would you care to expand on your thesis there, sport?
Cotchery is better than anyone on the Giants, so I'm going with the Jets. Both NJ teams have a weak WR corps. Mostly unproven. Jets have one proven guy and Giants have zero.
Who cares? Interesting how this gets posted minutes after we learn Burress got released...are you really that desperate to sell yourself on how the Jets are someway better than the Giants? THEY WON A SB 2 YEARS AGO. WE HAVEN'T SNIFFED ONE IN 40 YEARS. NUFF. SAID.
As of now I guess it's a draw between the two...but the Giants are gonna acquire a legit WR at some pt (either via draft or trade). They have potential to have a sick offense cus of their defense (their DL is so stacked its unbelievable)
How about both teams lack a true #1 wr. You guys are really arguing nothing here. Both teams need help.
Hard To Say, As Both Are In Transition... Look -- three of the top 08 receivers for the NYGs are gone now. Our No. 1, L-C, is gone, and we don't have continuity at QB the way the NYGs do. I think both wideout groups are going to change because of the draft and maybe even from free agency before it's over. With the notable exception of Cotch, I think all the NYG and NYJ wideouts have to learn how to release off the line of scrimmage MUCH better than they are doing now. Steve Smith is No. 2 behind Cotch in this all-important trait. With the exception of Cotch and Smith, all these wideouts have yet to really prove themselves in their route running. So...the jury's out on your question, in my opinion.
