3-4 DE's aren't meant to pressure the qb.... I just read an article that said Mario Williams wouldn't be a good fit as a 3-4 DE since there primary responsibility is to hold up blockers to free up the LB's allowing them to create pressure. Would we still like Mario as much if the jets converted him to a pass rushing LB instead of a DE? Do we spend the 4th pick on someone who will average less then 10 sacks a season? Maybe he can revolutionize the position, but as it stands now it doesn't seem like the 3-4 scheme is made to allow pass rushing DE's to pressure the qb..... If we get him I'll be interested to see how we'll use him, thats for sure.
Well since we are running a hybrid scheme, including 3-4, 4-3, nickel, dime, packages-yet-to-be-seen, I think a guy who revolutionizes the position is a perfect fit. We aren't doing a pure 3-4. Herm tried to implement a pure 4-3, but even that didn't work. The modern NFL doesn't allow a team to play one way all the time. Offenses are too complicated to not adjust the gameplan in-game. Given that we are working with a a staff that comes from the BP/BB school of game-management, I tend to believe Mangini when he says he will mix it up sufficiently to cause confusion to the opposition. Any day of the week I would take Mario. Given that he said he would do whatever is asked of him, including moving to LB, how can you not like the guy? He has all of Abe's tools, and lacks the one thing people hated about Abe, his attitude.
That is so INSANE.... And it's ruining the Voting and Fan opinion... The point is - In a 4-3 defense Mario would have better STATS - But, I don't think you could find a better prospect for a 3-4 DE... How can someone say a 290lb Feak with speed, power and strength isn't a fit for a 3-4 defense - The person who wrote that article is either being misquoted or should be shot. UNLESS, he's trying to make the point that maybe you could fill the 3-4 DE spot cheaper.... But, BS, what do they think Richard Seymour does or brings to that defense??? What he brings is Versitility and the ability to disguise Fronts - You have a defense full of role players that can only pkay 1 position and you have an easy to read defense - One that we do not want.. Mario is perfect for this defense and that writer is a fool.
I didn't read every reply and for that, I apologize. I voted for Mario, by the way but only because I was given the 2 options. What I apologize for is this: Why, when these posts are made, do we limit the options to 2 or 3 guys? Has anyone come out with a thread that asks which of ALL players in the draft do we want with the first pick(#4). Most threads are opened by people wanting one of the 2 guys in the post. Where is the post that gets ALL of TGGs posters to say who they want with the 4 pick and see what the overall concensus pick is. That way we can talk about more players than Mario, Brick, Cutler ect. I think it is kinda funny that most of here have watched the same JETS game as our brethren but still we can't agree on what is best for OUR team. FYI, I have been a fan for 25+ years.
Good post. The reason I started this thread was because in another non-poll thread someone was like someone should make a poll because there was someone who said that Mario would win in a landslide. I wanted to see how big that landslide was. Also, I already did a poll like that where it was everyone including Leinart and like 10 other potential top picks. Leinart ran away with it, beating Mario D'Brick and everyone else.
The Saint WILL NOT take Mario Williams. They have absolutely no need for him seeing as they are pretty stacked at defensive end with Charles Grant, Darren Howard, and Will Smith. I've used this comparison before, and I will use it again. "The Saints drafting Mario Williams would be like the Jets drafting Bryan Thomas with Ed Reed still on the board." Except their Ed Reed is D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
I think we should do another poll in 2 weeks and see how the opinions change- I think every day another Jets fan realizes how absurd it is to say Mario Williams isn't a 3-4 end and once you realize the ridiculous mistake - The vote changes even more... Mario is every bit the 3-4 end that Ferguson is a LT fit for our team that already has Jones - Unless you're getting us a RT as well.
I understand your view point but if the Saints think that this is the 2nd best guy in the draft and can't move down to pick up some picks how do you not take Williams. Reggie Bush is most likley going to the Texans and they don't need a running back. They have Davis which i believed they drafted in the fourth round, a steal. Some team may just fall in love with his potential and ignore the depth. Another prime example was when the chiefs drafted Larry Johnson out of Penn State. They had Priest Holmes at the time and everyone thought they were crazy. Now he's starting for them and Priest may retire. My point is that Williams may be to good to pass up. Regardless if this is the case The Jets are getting a primo prospect and I can't wait for this draft!
I understand what you are saying, but I still don't think there is anyway the Saints take Williams. I just checked their roster, and they no longer have Darren Howard, but, I also noticed that Charles Grant (5) and Will Smtih (3) have only been in the league for a few years. I dont think they are going to take a defensive end, no matter how high they have him rated, and force one of the two very good, and very young guys to sit out. Meanwhile, they haev a gaping hole at left tackle and D'Brickashaw still on the board. I think this is a case where we may see a team let their higher-rated player go by in order to get the guy that will be the MOST HELP TO THE TEAM.
