I think the "98" team was the best since I've been a fan. I'd slot last year's team right behind them.
The 2000's overall is the best era this franchise has ever seen. barring the obvious championship year.
Sure it is a big deal. Houston was the defending division champion and our only true threat to the division. Whether you consider that era to be a championship era is irrelevant because IT WAS a championship era. Our only one in fact. I know you like to demean those teams but until we win another championship that was the best era of Jets football.
Houston was not a threat in 1968, they were 2-4 and 4-5 when we beat them and finished 4 games back. That's sort of like saying Cincy was a tough win last year b/c they won their div the year before. It's not a chmapionship era, it was a championship season. The packers had a championship era w/ multiple SB and NFL titles in the 60s, the jets had a championship season. Do you consider the 80s Bears to be a championship era? you would called the 80s Mets their championship era?
The '99-'01 Rams made TWO SBs, 3 playoff apps then made 2 more playoff apps in '03 & '04. That era wasn't 1 SB, 2 playoff wins.
We've been a contender, we've been to the doorstep of the SB twice. That didn't happen in the 60s, we had the greatest year in our history but to me an era is longer tha 2 years anayway and if you extend the 60s in either direction it drags down that era.
We won 2 division titles and a SB Championship. How many of either have we won in the last decade? Winning a championship trumps making the playoffs as a wildcard and zero championships. Sorry, it just does. If there was a WC in 1967 we would have made the playoffs then as well.
winning a division doesn't trump a WC berth if you lose in your first game. Ask the Pats if they would trade their last 2 div titles for 2 chances to play in the title game. Not to mention we have the pats in our division, back then the next closest team in the div was .500 each year so it wasn't like winning it in '98 where we had 3 other playoff teams or '02 where the LAST PLACE team was .500.
They only battled 5 teams for a playoff spot, for a WC spot they battled 11 teams for 2 spots which would still be 1 per 5 1/2 teams which is toughere than 1 in 5.
One div title in a year where the last place team was as good as the 2nd palce team in those late 60s years.
Okay, so no SB Titles then and one less Division (where we won on a tiebreaker). Not better than an era where we actually won it all and followed it up with a solid Division Championship.
Jets were pretty solid in 69 I believe. Lost to the Chiefs in the playoffs, which they almost won. Chiefs won the SB that season.
