You can blame rex for trading up for sanchez if you are in the anti sanchez camp. Also blame him for the many questionable draft moves he's made over the years. You can blame rex for being part of keeping holmes over edwards, making him a captain and for rex not having grasp of our team when we were 8-5 and bound for the playoffs a third year in a row. Last year was a lot of bad luck with injuries and whatnot, but if we make the playoffs the year before he is nowhere as near on the hot seat and maybe can coach with a clear head instead of checking over his shoulder with idzik counting the days until he can fire rex and get rid of sanchez . . . There is a lot more after and in-between the above, but it hurts to look back on all that. I don't think rex deserves all the shit he gets. Same with sanchez. But being in NY and rex being the way he is/was with the bravado and predictions doesn't bowed well if you are losing.
Make that five, and we got an argument - a correct one at that. Teams that reach the conference finals don't get bad in a hurry unless GM is doing some serious dumb fuck thing - which T-Bomb did.
In the last couple of years of tannenbaums control, he loaded the team up and went out and got Bret Farve. He overpaid and got the last couple of year out of aging veterans. Brett Farve always planned on fing us,so in effect Sanchez was playing with the team built for Bret farve. I can give Sanchez props for his playoff performances but no one can say he has displayed any trait other then turning the ball over, even in those playoff years. Unfortunitly we are in the rebuilding years.
Part of it was the fact they overachieved in 2009 and 2010. Perhaps raised the expectations higher then they should've been and people were caught up in the moment and didn't notice the potential warning signs. On top of that, they caught a few breaks in games in 2010. Minimal turnovers and the other team turning it over at inopportune times and getting beneficial calls. Pass interference call in the Denver game, the overtime wins against Detroit and Cleveland, the close call in the regular season Pittsburgh game. Then look at 2011 the lucky breaks they got in 2010 starting going against them instead. Money was spent wrong during the offseason in 2011 after the lockout. Letting nnamdi put the teams planned moved on hold and by the balls, giving Holmes who's a solid #2 receiver #1 receiver money, Braylon kinda forced their hand by pricing himself out so I don't fault them on that. Giving David Harris who's a good player that I like Patrick Willis like money despite him not being on Patrick Willis's level. Going further back, lack of planning for the long term. Lack of emphasis put on the draft. Tanny was quick to live in the moment and trade future draft picks. The gholston pick and the overall mishandling of Sanchez. Lastly I think the reality of it is this. 09 they were a 9-7 team that squeaked in but the defense stepped it up at the right time and the qb minimized mistakes in the playoffs and made a decent play or 2. That gave hope. 2010. Looking back now, they started off hot but were mostly beating up on scrub teams, some who they were lucky to beat and they sort of drifted back to reality after the 9-2 start before making another decent playoff run. All in all those 09 and 10 teams were good teams but not great teams. The moves they made and didn't make that offseason before the 2011 were regressing moves combined with the fact the 09 and 10 teams overachieved. It was downhill from there and reality hit.
Very good post. The lack of long term planning really comes into play in hindsight. We got Favre for a one year rental (which mostly everyone knew it was, he just wanted to get back at GB somehow in the near future), and then he left. Because of this it was Kellen Clemens or rookie QB. We were almost forced into getting a QB that year, we traded up. We kept on trading up and only had 3 picks in 2009, 2 who are no longer on the team. We stacked the team in 08,09,and 10 to try and win now. Then we had to rebuild the team on the fly in 2011 and we didn't do it. Tanny tried again in 2012 and couldn't do it. Part of this is because we had so few draft picks in 2009 and 2010 that there were no players to step up provide a punch to the offense or defense. If we won a SB with those moves, we could take this expected down turn. But we didn't win and took this downturn, so Tanny and the Jets parted ways. They wanted fresh eyes and a new approach, and right now we are in year 1 of Idzik trying to clean up this team. Next year seems plentiful with draft picks.
IMHO, when Stephen Hill dropped the 3rd down pass at New England last year...He just stinks, no hands and no brain...hmy:
add me to the list of fans waiting too long.. and you score points for remembering charlie winner and how awful he was.. the greatest owner of the jets was sonny werblin.. getting rid of him after he built our super bowl team was the beginning of the end in jets history and it started showing the season after we won the bowl.. and your mention of ewbank reminds me that he was the greatest jets coach of all time followed by parcells.. rex ryan is just like his old man and by the time he is finished people will have forgotten the first two years where we got close but he couldn't finish the job.. all down hill since
<Next year seems plentiful with draft picks> ... and cap money I might add! But with Idzik and his fellow ball boy in the front office along with Bradway who is a proven failure, we have no chance to cash in on what is the franchise's only hope.. We need a football guy who knows talent to take over the operation. Firing Ryan is an important first step but not enough.
Tannys problem was that he failed at drafting so instead he would put band-aids over it with free agents. Its much eaiser to pick and choose from free agents but the problem is you are going to have pay them much more than a draft pick. All of the successful teams draft well and only use the cap money on free agents when they have to Tanny drafted Kyle Wilson and then proceeded to trade away a pick for Antonio Cromartie in the same offseason. Why the fuck would you use a first rounder on a CB if you plan on bringing one in? That first round draft pick should have been an offensive player.
That's probably correct. My issue with Millner which is based on his college and camp history is durability not talent. Wilson on the other hand is an all pro finger wagger and good at little else.
based on his college history where he missed 1 game, you are concerned about his durability. makes perfect sense.
Someone else who has no knowledge about our coach. Anyone that makes a comment like this should be forced to a) Go back and look at film on how stubborn and arrogant Buddy Ryan was and b) read Rex Ryans book. Rex is nothing like his father from an attitude and "people skills" perspective. His blow up at the press conference was nothing and he had every right to smack Manish in the face.
it's a legit concern. Millner has already had a good share of "procedures" for his age. There's a good chance Father time is a real prick to this kid.
