Having a great secondary isn't going to help stop the run, which was horrid last year. It also won't generate any pressure up front. Picking up Jenkins will clog the running lanes and push back on the offensive line, which will help the LB corp put pressure on the QB. The extra pressure will also help the secondary by not allowing the Qb to have all day to throw, which was another problem from last year. So yes I think it was worth more to get Jenkins and improve the defense overall then to pay more and get Samuel to improve one aspect of the defense.
Fair enough, I personally think you gave up way too much for a guy that "Used to be" a Pro Bowler and is probably now just starting the downside of his career. Look, John Fox is a pretty tough coach, one of the toughest in football, if he couldn't motivate Jenkins what makes you think Mangini can. He's very undisciplined, purposely missed workouts and has no issue at all keeping McDonald's executives quite happy. To pay this guy 7 mill a year for the next 5 years knowing his tendency to pack on the beef and lose his motivation is unbelievably risky when you simply could have drafted your NT in Round 3 (Pat Sims from Auburn or Red Bryant) the pick you gave up and still gotten Asante Samuel. I question this decision by Mangini.
jaywayne is absolutely correct...fixing the defense starts with the D-line...everything cascades from there. Samuel is a waste of money.....he's the product of a great D-line in NWE....any team that will spend 10 million a season on that guy deserves to lose (ie: look at what Clements did for the Niners last season...money well spent there). The Jenkins pickup is a great start....Harris will benefit greatly for this aquisition...I'm sure Brady will have the #51 tatooed all over his @ss this season when Harris eats him for breakfast.
He has the funniest name I've ever seen, for starters. Did you hear that line once during the post-season? No? That's because no one said it. This is an amazing trade and start to the offseason. I don't like the Vilma trade unless the conditional pick can escalate to a second but we're getting something for the guy, so any news is good news I guess. Good luck to him and the Saints next season. I also thank the Carolina Panthers' front office for being dumping off their talent at such a reasonable price to us. Now I get to pray that we don't trade Dewayne Robertson. A line of Coleman-Jenkins-Robertson would be, well . . . Dominant. Yes, I said it. We saw him play some snaps at DE while Pouha played at nose and Robertson dominated despite playing the majority of the snaps at nose and not getting too much rest. Putting him at DE, despite him not fitting the typical profile, can only mean good things for the Jets defense.
I dont see giving up a 3rd and a 5th as much of a risk for a pro bowl talent at a position of greatest need for us. I dont think either Pat Simms or Red Bryant make it to the 3rd round anyway and Pat Simms doesnt seem to have the skill set to play the nose in a 3-4 anyway. Besides the fact that you only hope and pray that those rookies can approach the kind of success that Jenkins has already acheived. And the guy is 28 years old, he has plenty of good football left, you dont think so go check out the Panthers boards and listen to them crying themselves to sleep over losing this mountain man. We'll see next year id Samuel is the real deal or if he is the product of playing behind the best DLine in football. For the Jets there was no question that Jenkins fills the biggest need we have on D..
I'm coming in very late, --- totally against this trade. I never had this guy even on my radar. How do we even know this guy can play NT? He played DT in Carolina & they run a 4-3. Was he a 2 gap stopper?
he has the perfect size and athleticism to play the position. in addition hes only like 27yrs old i think it was a perfect trade....and am so far very excited about this offseason. faneca next please!!
He wasn't "motivated" because he was severly underpaid, didn't like Carolina, and realized by last year the team around didn't care about winning like he did. When he was getting a decent salary and saw the team around him playing at a high level, he was arguably the best DT in the NFL. And the last two years, although he hasn't been on that level, he's still been very, very good. I love how you talk about Jenkins' lack of motivation, his ability to pack on the pounds, and then suggest that drafting Bryant would have been a smarter move. Not only do we not know whether Bryant can become half the player Jenkins was and is, but he's had those same concerns.
lol it's good to see a pats fan be the bitter one for a change. Did your 19-0 shirt shrink in the wash?
For those worried about Jenkins' "commitment", or "work ethic": http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/02/jets_landing_jenkins.html
Who cares about fat, underachieving, over-paid nose tackles, this site hands down has the best avatars. BTW: Here's the deal from Philly for A$ante, are you telling me you guys couldn't have coughed up another 2mill a year instead of digging deep for Mr. Big Mac "It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. "
They probably could have. But improving the DL is more important than adding another CB, especially at that price, and especially when it's a NT the caliber of Jenkins.
bottom line is we have a young pro bowl type player on defense.......i would trade a 3rd and a 5th for that anyday!
