Cablevision actually put up a bid for the land and when denied they sought review/legal action. The NFL was annoyed at this and moved the draft away from MSG owned theater for one year. I think once the Olympics passed over NYC the interest for it fizzled out. People please correct me if I'm wrong, this is now about 10 years ago, wow. And to the people saying the Jets would never move, I know that. The question was what it would take though, and moving and changing the name would probably do it for me. I know it's not possible, but that's probably what it would take.
Absolutely Falco, the baseball Giants, Dodgers and the Nets would never move from NY*.... never happen. And the Islanders would never come painfully close to leaving as well because of financial instability among other problems. Then of course you have other quasi examples, such as the Jets and Giants would never leave NYC. And finally the Rangers never talked about leaving NYC for NJ in the early '80s before the Devils came to the Meadowlands. In fact, the only major NY team that hasn't entertained some sort of move, either within the NY metro area or leaving it entirely, is the Knicks and I may simply be ignorant as to their history as I don't follow them at all. Why do people think NY is too big to lose things? This shows a painfully poor understanding of history.... *-The NJ Nets started out as a NY franchise. In reality they are moving BACK to NY.
Same thing was said about LA. The only difference is the level of commitment in NY versus LA. If that changed I can assure you NY teams would consider moving.

Oh and while I myself had some grave misgivings about Bloomberg, do also look up to see how much of his own personal loot Bloomberg gave to the City of New York to fund programs in all sectors (hint: in the hundreds of millions of dollars). NYC mayor's $225,000 a year salary? Bloomberg's was $1.00 a year. One dollar. I resent Johnson jumping in bed with a guy (John Mara) who has not been above taking shots at the "circus" Jet brand from his loft in "classy" Giant-land. No knock on my Jersey brethern, but it also would've been nice to not only to have had theirown stadium, but one that had a 'NY' address not only in the figurative shadows of, but literally in the midst of the greatest city in the world. Who was going to pay for a NYC stadium, what would it have cost (3+B?) and how much would they have had to charge for PSLs? It was being planned right at the start of the worst recession in modern times. No city would have paid for it and certainly no owner in their right mind would pay what it would cost to build it in NY so this argument is really ridiculous.
Ftr I was opposed to the WSS, very much so. No tailgating, the huge site development number, the one time only tie in to the Olympics that would not support the stadium long term... The numbers imo did not add up. Complaining about political opposition is beside the point. A project like that always has political opposition. It is up to the proponents to make the case on the merits. They did not. The real problem with the WSS was that Woody was so invested in it as a real estate play that his only Plan B was the deal with the Giants. That was flat out stupid. The best place for the stadium would have been the Yonkers Raceway site. Equally distant from LI and North Jersey, accessible by subway to all of NYC, plenty of parking, access to existing highways. And enough land in a fairly central location. Perhaps not perfect, but far better than what Woody saw as his only Plan B.
Even the Yankees were contemplating a move to NJ. Btw the Nets were an NJ team first. Then they moved to Long Island then they moved back to NJ then they moved to BK.
That is the worst spot, it would take 4 hours to get out of that place after a game unless they did some major construction to the roads around the Stadium, add in no train options and it is a disastrous site.
The Yanks were going to move to NJ like the Jets were going to move to LA as reported in 2001. They were using those sites as leverage to get new Stadiums built where they wanted them.
No, I live in Westchester. I never have any problems getting out of the Meadowlands but I know where to park and best route out of Stadium. I have had more problems at Shea going to a few Met games and we'd have a lot more people at our games than at Met games.
