You are right in the playoffs defense makes a much bigger difference. In the regular season a great QB (Manning) can carry a team on his back to wins but when he has to play good defenses in the post season he cannot win by himself and the rest of his team gets exposed. But do not discount the QB. if we had switched Sanchez with the QB of the opposing team in each of our last 6 playoff games is there any doubt we would have had +20 point differential in those games from the actual outcome. There is probably only even a remote chance that a Sanchez led offense could have generated a single point against our defense in all of those 6 games combined. A certainty that he could have not ended up with positive net points after returned TO's. Yes a QB does matter but great defenses have more meaning in the playoffs. Add in the winter weather and and Rex's style is the perfect style to win in the playoffs. Although I would rather have a great QB and mediocre defense than a great defense and an abysmal QB.
well, that 'cheap' QB play (Kapernik & Newton) have been out shadowed by goal line stands at seller defense so far.
Look at the QBs that made it to this weekend. Superstars or future superstars in the making. Defense is critical, but without a true franchise QB you're on the outside looking in. Manning, Brady, Bree's, Rivers, Luck, Wilson, Kaep, Cam. That's why those teams are here this weekend. Not a mediocre one among them- the Andy Dalton's and the Alex Smiths are the guys who get bounced. Had Rodgers been fully healthy he probably knocks out Kaep, but even he's showing he's a future star. It's all about the QB. And not building around a flawed one, it's about getting a great one. _
I know. But that's the weird part. Only the teams with really good QBs made it into the playoffs, but it was the Defense and Running games that took over from there.
That was the point of my post. Those teams are getting quality qb pay on the cheap thus allowing them to spend in other areas.
I think that's a fair assessment but the steady superior QB play is what makes you a winner on a consistent basis. _
Yeah there's that pesky problem of having to win enough games in the regular season to have a shot at winning in the playoffs. Funny thing, every playoff team is in top half of the league in QB rating for the year. The Bears, Cowboys, Steelers and Falcons were the only teams in the top half of the league in that category that didn't make the playoffs and no one would be surprised if all 4 of those teams were in the playoffs next year. The Jets, btw, were dead last in QB rating.
Yup. I don't think of the Pats or Broncos or 49ers or possibly the Steelers or Cowboys or Bears about going to the playoffs, I think of the QBs going to the playoffs. _
When a QB gets to $20M a year he hinders his team in terms of their chances to win a championship. The evidence is pretty clear on that. What's backwards is that winning a championship often gets a QB to $20M a year at which point he becomes a drag on his team's championship hopes. It's not all about winning a lot of games in the regular season at this point. That's important, but what's more important is being able to beat the teams in the playoffs who also have a good QB but can afford to spend elsewhere also because their guy hasn't hit the jackpot yet. Peyton Manning is actually an exception to the rule. He's the one guy you can point at in the last decade and say he won a championship despite making $20M a year and having the rest of the roster downgraded as a result. Tom Brady is the same quality QB but as soon as he started making $20M a year the Patriots started having trouble consistently beating good teams in the playoffs.
This team is very close to contending,We should be making some noise next season if the right moves are made
We also need to get lucky on the injury front. The thing about the Jets is that we could get 4 plus upgrades next year and lose a couple of key players to injury and we'd still be short talent to contend next season.
That Cimini stat about us being healthy is misleading and well a Cimini stat. If you look at the roster as whole we were one of the least healthy teams in thr league last year. Holmes, Hill and Kerley were all never healthy and all suffered injuries in almost every game per year. Gates, who if he remained healthy would likely have been our number 1 receiver this year was out all year. Ivory was injured a good part of the year, so was Powell and Goodson was injured and suspended. Winslow was injured and suspended and Cumberland had health problems as well. Mangold was injured most of the year and the rest of the OL certainly played like they were seriously injured. On Defense Cro was never healthy, Milner started the year injured,. Our best pass rusher in Barnes lost for the year. Despite what Cimini claims the Jets were not a healthy team in 2013. He cherry picks his stats to mislead not to inform.
Was reading until I saw that Clyde Gates was the likely #1 wideout. LMAO Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Here are what the playoffs tell me. 2 of the best QBs in history and 2 of the best young QBs in the NFL are going to the championship games. _
I keep hearing that and yet I think the fact that injuries rolled our WR's and TE's makes the stat deceptive. Those areas were absolutely wiped out for a portion of the middle of the schedule.
But none of those 4 top QBs have had a great game yet. Not one 'air war' in any of the PO games. They all relied heavily on great defense and even better running games to get there. Kind of ironic. Maybe next weekend we'll see these QBs earn their money!
Only 1 of the 4 QB's playing next weekend was taken in the 1st round. Only 2 of them were in the golden 36.
Regardless of where they were taken they are top top QBs. No Andy Dalton's, no Alex Smiths, no Tannyhills. You gotta find that guy. Seattle and SF struck gold. Pats struck platinum. _
