I don't think we can use draft rounds as a basis for guaging talent... Seems pedestrian? He was rather good in college. I saw him at Hofstra in pre-season and I thought he looked like he could work out nicely.. Still think we should have drafted Cutler though.
1. Precisely to the point. With decent line, any decent back can perform like a pro-bowler. 2. But to a degree, "You do not need a high-round RB" statement is a bit overrated. Take a look at Troy Aikman - Emmitt Smith held out at the start of the season once, and Aikman was running for his life during that time. Cowboys did have one of the better OLs at that time, but still that didn't save Aikman's day. Smith came back, and things started rolling again like ever before. (And you know the rest of the story.) My point is that, you still need someone who can perform at RB position, decent OL or not. 3. Again, I think this team has to invest high picks at the trench - be it OG, or RT or DT. Whatever. This team is not losing because of poor QB play or poor defensive display. This team is losing because it is losing the battle at the LOS on both sides. To have been able to disguise this simple obvious fact till this deep into the season just shows you how good this coaching and planning of this team is - imagine what it will do once it has all the right pieces for the team.
Clemens would have been drafted much higher had he not broke his leg. His arm strength is considered a tad below Cutler, throws acurately and makes his progression reads very fast, much like Chad. The only difference is he can throw the ball 50 yards.According to the scouts he "could be one of the QBs to make an impact right out of college". To make that statement is just uhm... how shall is say it diplomatically, stupid
My plan (barring some ridiculous playoff/SB run) would be to have Pennington and Clemens battle out the QB spot next year, and if pennington wins the battle and sucks early for an improved team, put in Clemens and don't look back for a while I would upgrade our guard and RT position FA or in the 1st 3 rounds of the draft.....hopefully a better starter at RT, and better depth, possibly a new starter, at one of the G positions for next season between FA's and the draft I would look to sign RB Michael Turner....he is the real deal folks, hang on to cedric and leon.....a very nice 3 rb's IMO I would look to draft a DE round 1 or 2 to start opposite Ellis, and in the top 3 rounds look to draft a Pass Rushing OLB for the 3-4 to start/split time with Hobson opposite of Bryan Thomas....we are getting back pouha, and dewayne is looking better than ever at NT....But I think we need to sign a pretty good NT or DE though also as a FA for atleast quality depth and possibly a starting position if someone gets beaten out In our secondary, I don't see the need for a great upgrade as much as some of you others, i would rather build the d-line/pass rushing unit first and let our young CB's (Justin Miller....where you at) play with a better front 7, but prehaps a Marquee CB from NE will want to come here and that would be awesome WR and TE I think we are set, but a deep threat in RD 3-5 would be nice, or a FA that slips through the cracks for depth all of the other positions i didn't mention i feel don't really need an upgrade, but of course, FA pickups and the draft are always used for better depth
He was NOT a first round talent. Please take a look at that draft and see what other QBs came off the board. The ONLY QBs you can say are better (and I think they definitely are) are Marc Bulger and Tom Brady. It was easily one of the worst top QB drafts ever considering Bulger and Brady weren't drafted until very late.
Intersting points. What bothers the guys and girls that arent fond of Pennington isnt whether he is better then Clemens. His passes have been clocked on radar at 8 mph. Now maybe Clemens cant throw the ball harder than that..maybe he can. I tried to throw the ball that slow and got all tangled up. My neighbor came over and said to me "what are you trying to do..throw the ball really slow?"
It's not just the arm. It's the movement of the quarterback in anticipation of passing to a route while avoiding the pressure. Penny doesn't move in anticipation of the route that seems to be opening. But, more like seperate things. "Movement from pressure to accomplish a pass." vs. "Movement from pressure in order to pass." When he moves his goal seems to be to avoid the rush. Yet, when the great QB's did it they moved away from pressure in order to throw it to a route.
No, but honestly. Media markets have a lot of say in the college to pro system. Larger media markets = more exposure for decent players = higher draft pick for the value of the player. If I was trying to meet needs on draft day after the first or second round I'd be looking closely at the Big Twelve players. Smallest media market per a very competitive conference. Not, to the exclusion of a better player. But, the East and West media markets so out gross the midwest that really good players end up being overlooked... ie. Zac Taylor of Nebraska = 1 sub-70 QB rating this year versus some of the best teams nationally.
This should be Chad's last year on the jets--that's my opinion, not a prediction. Chad does not have an nfl arm--if you watched Brees torch the Cowboys you'd see he's got the arm stregnth you need. Chad should finish this year and then the jets should terminate his contract. Chad makes too much to be a backup. Let Clemens battle in out with Ramsey or whomever next year. I think Clemens will be okay--he has a good arm and mobility. As for the draft I think we need to strengthen our RUN DEFENSE more than anything. We are too small on the line and too slow at LB. We need an A.J. Hawk type blitzer coming around the corner.
Last year after Chad went down we found out that Bollinger was not the guy to lead this team, he is a career backup. If the Jets loose this weekend and are pretty much out of the playoff picture, start Clemens and see what type of a quaterback we have. Chads problem this year is the lack of a running game to take the pressure of him. He cannot win many games on the strength of his arm and carry the entire team, like an Elway or P. Manning.
Well....After reading almost all of these posts, this post summed it up best for me when addressing Jets' needs for the 07' season . OFFENSE : O-Line : LG & RT upgrades & possiblly a better blocking or big play TE. WR : Speedy deep threat needed. RB : Speedy/Power break-away RB needed QB : QB needed that is a weapon on offense....with arm & evasiveness. Maybe he is already on the roster. DEFENSE : D-Line : NT.... More speed at all defensive positions. Defense has to get faster overall. I can't see Von Ouflen or Bobby Hamilton coming back. DE.... 2 Pass rushers also definitly needed. LB'S : More speed at all LB's positions & OLB positions. Vilma has to be moved to OLB. Hobson has to be moved to inside LB. Barton can play anywhere & can be utilized in blitz packages more. Schlegel may start at ILB next season ? Of course there's always free-agents & other draft picks. CB's : After further review.....Play-Maker definitely needed here with speed & ball-hawking ability needed. Up-grading only strengthens team. SAF : SS needed with speed & hard hitting ability. Maybe Washington can fill the role. I also believe Justin Miller can be Jets' SS. He hits hard & has great speed. Obviously he can't really play an effective corner with his in-ability to back pedal; thus he always has his back to the play & thus hard to make plays on ball. As SS....ball he will always be facing play & thus can make plays on the ball. He also increases teams speed on field with him always being on the field. Rhodes & Miller can be fastest & best Safety combo in league ??? Would give Jets' a fast & capable last line of defense .
The reason they didnt care about the run was because we got down early. They were pass blitzing and it was too much for our oline.
people keep saying the offensive line had a bad day but on the pick 6 the QB was not pressured. his other INT was also just a rotten throw. The Bills run blitzed on early downs and put Pennington in 2nd and 3rd and long. This is not strategy of a very high order. We can complain about play calling but Chad has the authority to check off as well. Fact is, Chad has had too many rotten games for one season and a team that wants to be good cannot afford it. I am not calling for Clemens now. Chad should finish the season. But next year they need someone who can make the CBs play softer and make the safeties stay out of the box. That is another reason our running game is less than mediocre. Nobody respects his arm. He is very smart and he may burn them from time to time but teams with good secondaries chew him up. He is always going to have problems with good teams.
how about he stunk in the first NE game, the jacksonville game, the Cleveland game, the Bears game and the Buffalo game. He wasn't mediocre, he stunk. 14 TDs and 15 INTs is terrible. It is one thing to have a sub par game. a team can win when the QB has a sub-par game. The Bears make a habit of it. They also happen to be good enough to win when Grossman stinks. people say the jets do not win without pennington. well, they do not lose without him either. a good QB will have a few stinkers, but he won't have 5 and counting. and 14 tDs in 13 games is plain pathetic. He cannot stick the ball in where it needs to be stuck when they are down close. I don't hate the guy. But he isn't even a good QB right now, production-wise.
I think I'm just going to throw something equally irrelevant at you in response: in Tom Brady's (6th round) first camp with the Pats he looked just as confused and slow to me as he had the previous 3 years at Michigan.
the whole two shoulder surgeries mantra is not new... its said as often as kerry told us he was in viet nam
Yes they will. It's fine if you want to say that Pennington has been horrible in some weeks and that maybe if all the stars were aligned just right then Clemens would have played better and perhaps won. But you have to look at the overall picture and realize that a rookie QB is going to end up having more bad games than Pennington.
