Abreu was hitting very well early in the season, his problems go back about 2 weeks or so andyou don't drop a guy b/c of a few bad games. Giami hasn't been hitting either and had another 0fer last night- should we immediately take him out of the 3 spot?
Giambi was batting .302 entering the game last night. That's not hitting? However, I wouldn't have put him in the #3 spot either. Maybe Posada although that would be a risk. At least Torre would have the righty/leftie/righty thing he covets so much and it would give him 3 .350 hitters in a row. And Abreu hit well only the first week of the season. After that he was terrible. He seems like he can't play the field anymore either so something must be in his head.
Going into the first Boston series Abreu was hitting .345, he was batting over .300 as recently as just over 2 weeks ago and you guys were calling fohim to be moved while he was hitting .300. Giambi is at .299 now and has 3 hits in his last 20 ABs- he's struggling and alot wore than when you guys first started calling for Abru to move. You have to give a guy time, you don't jut move him b/c of a bad game or a bad week and to say he should have been moved 2 or 3 weeks ago is wrong- it's jut you guys bashing Joe for no reason yet again.
Well, Torre moved him to 7th which I thought was overkill too. I thought 5th was where he should have gone and move Matsui up to 3rd, not that he is hitting any better yet, but that doesn't give the r/l/r matchup. Coming out of the second Boston series a week later Abreu was batting .253.
Matsui sucks, he is an awful defensive player and he doesn't hit much anymore. We made a huge mistake wasting money to re-sign him 2 years ago.
Wow..how can you say that he sucks? He has a .298 BA since being here and his best two years ARE the last two. What do you expect, everybody to hit .350?
He is an awful defenive player and has cost us many times including that critical game 2 last year against detroit. Sure if we could have had another cluthc hit or 2 we still would have won but his misplay killed us and how can you say his best 2 years are his last 2 when he barely played last year b/c he was hurt? If he was brought back as a DH I would have been fine w/ it but his defense is awful and kills us all the time which made his latest deal a bad one.
If was brought back as a DH Giambi would be playing first every day. Abreu is no better and maybe worse in the field this year. Worse, I'm sure. He has misplayed half the balls hit to him but at least he has an arm. To think we could have had Guerrero for 70 million. Still Cashman's biggest mistake.
Abre is a MUCH better defensive player than matsui- heck bernie would be a much better defensive player at this point. matsui is a joke in the OF, we ave Giambi at DH which is why we should not have re-signed Matui 2 years ago.
Bernie at his worst is better than the matsui we have seen the last 2-3 years and while Giambi wasn't a full timeDh thewriting was on the wall that he would eventually be a DH.
Actually, junc is making a lot of sense in this one. It's almost identical to the situation the Red Sox have with Manny. Ortiz has to DH, so they have to live with below average defense in left, although I think Manny is a little underrated in the field. Of course, at the plate Matsui is no Manny Ramirez.
Matsui was re-signed because of the income he produces from the Far East. Thats it. The Revenue that George makes off of Matsui more than covers his salary ++++. I have said since the beginning of the year that Melky should be in LF, Giambi at 1B and Matsui the DH.
Personally, I think Manny is a VERY underrated left fielder. I've been saying that for years. He plays the wall in Fenway better than anyone I've ever paid significant attention to. He also plays left in Yankee Stadium very well, and that's a feat in itself. Besides, he's talking about Matsui like he's not playing well. Matsui is hitting the ball with men on base. Abreu is doing nothing at the plate, and hasn't all year. In right field, he's surely more talented than Matsui in left, but he is playing far more lazy (except the past couple games.) Matsui may not be a great left fielder, but he doesn't lag after balls, and gets the ball in quickly after it first touches the ground. Given the arms of the infielders, having a weak arm in the Yankees outfield is not that big a handicap. This post is just laughable. I didn't even bother to respond since it is so ridiculous, but what the hell. Matsui cost us game 2? Seriously? Junc, maybe you might want to watch the WHOLE game next time. And if you're going to ask him how he can say the last 2 years were his best, based on the fact that he missed a huge chunk of last year, then you can't turn around a couple posts later and say he's been worse than Bernie over the past couple years either. Bernie could hit, but his defense was average at the top of his game. Matsui at least stays with balls, even if they drop. Bernie was confused all the time, and if he weren't naturally fast, his baseball instincts would have had him out of the game many years ago. But I don't feel like sitting here all day and arguing about Matsui with you. That's why I ignored the comments in the first place.
Matsui misplayed a ball Melky easily would have gotten to and it allowed Det to score a critical run which cost us game 2. bernie was NOT a good defensive player his last 4-5 years BUT he wa still better than matsui- Matsui is an awful defensive player. That is exactly right and while it has helped george's pocketsd ithas hurt our team on the field. the worst thing to happen last year was matsui coming back from his injury and knocking Melky to the bench(along w/ Sheff coming back as well).
I would agree with that except Cabrerra is having his sophomore jinx and shouldn't be playing at all. I much prefer Giambi at first though despite his defense.
Abreu should have caught that ball against the wall last night. If he had decided to run instead of trot he would have. When he did finally turn around the ball was two feet to his left.
He's afraid of walls. I know he's won Gold Gloves but I'm not sure if this wall thing has gone on throughout his entire career or just recently. In a series against the Mets last year he missed 2 or 3 makeable catches because they would've brought him near the RF fence.
