I think how you guys approach Keller will show how much the coaches/FO are really committed towards Sanchez. Shipping Keller out would take away the last guy that Sanchez has had around his entire career. Paying a guy a little extra to stay and keep that chemistry would show they are committed towards him.
Our QB play has been so bad that I can't truly judge the skill players accordingly. I think Keller can be a top tight end with a good QB throwing to him. I think the Jets should franchise tag him.
Sorry. Jeff Ireland. How much do you think the Dolphins would pay Dustin Keller if he were a FA? And would you even want Dustin on the Phins?
Bring him back only on a Jet friendly deal (maybe a one year, prove you're still healthy deal). Otherwise fuck him, I never liked him that much.
I think we would rather try to draft a young TE on the cheap than pay Keller, especially since it looks like we might let Fasano walk who is undoubtedly a better blocker but less athletic. But since we attempted to draft an athletic TE in Egnew last year and he has been a bust so far, I could see us showing some interest in Keller. But Ireland won't overpay him
You should pay more attention to what you're reading. Before he was injured for the whole season there were people who said he sucked & is way overrated by Jets fans.
Pretty much. Every fanbase over rates their own players & downplays players elsewhere. Keller is a one-dimensional TE who isn't even outstanding in his one specialty. 2-3 years @ 2.5M. If somebody offers him more money then let him walk.
New GM, OC, & offensive scheme. If Rex isn't willing to publicly scream how awesome Revis is in the media (like he always does) then I'm pretty sure he's not gonna publicly speak on Sanchez behalf also. I think too many phases of this team are changing for Sanchez to expect any commitment. Plus Keller was not very good anyway. Can't make a long-term commitment to Keller to help Sanchez when Mark himself could have only 1 season left.
Here is my overall dilemma on Keller...we know that, right now, he's an average to barely above average TE. That's with Sanchez tossing the rock in a "ground and pound" philosophy offense. The million dollar question remains that if he has an average to above average QB throwing the rock to the outside receivers on a consistent basis then the middle opens up and he can work it. Everyone in the NFL pretty much says that Keller is a good TE...except Jets fans that is. And earlier in the thread someone made the comment that Keller in Atlanta would be downright dangerous. Now, if Keller blew monkey chunks how could he be dangerous in Atlanta?? QB is the key. This is where the "waffling" begins for me...from the looks of it, barring some grand unforeseen transaction, Sanchez will be, yet again, tossing the pill to him next year. Does that negate his talents because Sanchez cannot get the ball to the outside receivers or do you pay him...have him waste one more year of youth etc... I'm pretty torn. If you can get him to agree to a $4-5 million a year you pull the trigger. Much more than that you have to let him walk. Someone also said if he's let go to FA then he's gone in seconds...this is not a statement you waste on an "average" player.
I think Keller is a good TE. I think with a good QB, he could be a pro bowler. However, as you mentioned in so many words, we do not have good QB. So do we waste a decent amount of money to pay a player that we can't utilize? Again, I think we franchise him, and try to trade him.
Keller is one of the better players at his position we have. He is undersized as a true TE and struggles in blocking against men bigger and stronger than him. But he is faster than most TE's and he does have good hands. Keller was never brought in to be a road grader, he was brought in to be a pass catching threat, and that he his. He's been the number one receiver on our team for years now. If you want to say "We don't have a QB to make him a pro bowler so we might as well cut him" then you can say the same thing about Holmes, Hill, and Kerely. You might not offer Keller $10m/yr because of the QB limitations, but you still make him a semi-decent offer ($3m/yr+) and hope he stays on the team.
Sign him or franchise him. If I am Keller, I want the hell out of NY and would sign a one year deal with a team that has an offense and a QB to show what I am worth, especially after coming off an injury. If I am the Jets, I try to sign him, but given the above, I think the Jets will need to franchise him to keep him.
Keller is gonna get a big time deal in Free agency & he's gonna make this fan base eat their words. He's a great athlete & is just as much of a game changer as guys like Vernon Davis,Aaron Hernandez are. Unfortunately he's never had a great QB playing in New York. Watch what happens when he goe to Atlanta or maybe even STL. All of this talk about him not being a complete tight end is silly. The TE position has changed. The dual tight end that is 6'6 270 no longer fits in today's pass happy NFL...to bitch that he isn't that type of player just sounds so outdated in principle.
And i want a Pony and a Gold Crown with diamonds on it, Keller is still a good tight end and will be cheaper to sign then those two guys. Put Keller with any top 10 QB and he is a pro bowler. Id take a healthy Keller over pitta and Walker
