The only problem I have with letting Keller go is that we have so many holes to fill. It's going to be hard enough to find starter-quality replacements at QB, LG, RG, RB, FB, DT, OLBx2,ILB, Sx2 and possibly K and CB as well.
Wave bye bye to him. The reason you will not get good value for a guy like this if you transition and trade is that he is not that good.
I don't know what he's asking. I'm not suggesting he wants top dollar but I remember him stating in preseason last year that he's a pro bowl tight end. So Im guessing he values himself at a marginally higher price than what the team values him at.
He shouldn't be expensive coming off an injury ridden contract year. And he should be a good fit in the new WCO. I say re-sign him if the price is right. Otherwise the Jets are going to have to spend a 2nd on Ertz or Eiffert (which I wouldn't be opposed regardless)
He's an above average receiving TE and his blocking has gotten better. He's been injured only one season so he isn't injury prone. He has a good attitude. This is not the description of a mediocre TE, no matter how pessimistic people want to be.
Let him test the market but stay in touch with his agent. If teams give reasonable offers, we then can consider matching or (slightly) beating them. Then again, if a team offers something ridiculous, you claim that it isn't in the best interests of your salary cap to match that offer and you wish him the best with his new team. Lets see what the market for him is first before we get stupid and offer something either way too high or insultingly low.
Let him walk - we need to shed most of what has been part of this offense for the last few years. There is not one player outside of the obvious ones on the line that should be on this team in 2014 (and maybe Kerley). So the more we can dump in 2013 the better. He is average at best, time for us to move on and let him to.
ah, i would have to see that in context. if it was a question on his goals for the season or in regards to his up coming free agency.i have the opinion that he can be and should be signed to a cp friendly deal. he is young and a better than average fit in the wco. morningweg(sp) has done so much more with so much less at the t.e. position that keller could see his pro bowl aspirations come true -
Franchise him and then explore trade market--get something for him--If no takers, cut him later or let him play for jets next year--If he shows more then resign for long term.
The more realistic option, is to let his agent find out how much he's not worth, then sign him for a little less. Kelller and Sanchez have good on the field timming, but he's not worth more than 1.5M.
He has had his moments but just never really put up the kind of #'s that would warrant a big payday or the franchise tag. It's a tough call because he does have potential, but I'm leaning more towards waving goodbye.
How will you know what other teams offer for him? You think his agent will be honest with you? Every team wants to know what other teams offer so the can beat the offer by a little. I don't think that really happens.
What if you tag him with the plan on trading him and then no one wants to pay $6MM for him? Can you really afford to pay him with the cap pressure?
