This times ten. Watched his whole career at WV. Smart kid, good athlete. NOT the answer. Solid college QB when on his game, does not have the NFL make up. A CFL guy.
You're a joke. Just because this guy said Geno sucks (with out any reasoning behind it), you think he watches college football? Please, I am confident i have watched more Geno Smith than you have, and tossing around "system QB" just proves that you havent watched anything. Its the typical bullshit excuse. Please tell me what exactly it is that makes this guy "suck"? Huh? Id like to hear a little scouting report. if you cant back your opinion, then GTFO.
If Geno can't beat out Sanchez then our 1st round pick in 2014 (which will likely be top 10) should be spent on a QB. At least 3 of these guys will be worth a top 10 pick: Tajh Boyd Teddy Bridgewater Derek Carr David Fales Kevin Hogan Brett Hundley Johnny Manziel Marcus Mariota AJ McCarron Stephen Morris Bryn Renner Logan Thomas All we have to do is let this season play out and see which of them shines. Currently Bridgewater is "the guy" but at this time last year Matt Barkley was "the guy" and this time two years ago no one had heard of Robert Griffin III.... so we have to wait and see.
by that logic, McElroy should be an elite NFL QB since he was the starting QB for a National Championship winning team.
I guess I'm not a college football expert, mainly because I don't watch it. But didn't Geno Smith play in multiple systems during his college years?
that 5 game losing streak bit seriously needs some context... hell he nearly lead the mountaineers to victory over TCU in that stretch. in a second overtime after a missed game winning field goal from WV, he managed to get a great 25 yd pass to Stedman bailey for a touchdown. the only thing separating them from victory was a two point conversion after another TD from TCU immediately followed. geno came up big in a big spot only for it to be all for nought, but because its in the loss column that fact goes under-appreciated. Not gonna say he was perfect all year long but lets not act like he was stinking it up all by himself the whole time.
If Geno puts up the same stats as Sanchez for 5 years I dont know............ I just hope it doesn't take the FO to realize he isn't the answer for another 5 years. Maybe hope we get a conference championship game out of it?
If Geno Smith CAN beat out Mark Sanchez at some point this year he might be our starting QB moving forward. He doesn't have to be all that good to beat out Sanchez though and so he might just be our backup QB for the next few seasons. If he CAN'T beat out Mark Sanchez then he's very likely to be our backup QB for the next few seasons with a chance to beat out whoever we draft next year. You must have a credible franchise QB candidate to get anywhere in the NFL right now. It's not an optional component. Basically the floor for what you need to have is Joe Flacco. If you don't have somebody at that level or above you're going to be mediocre on offense and that's going to cap you. Really, I'm shocked that Flacco was good enough to win a championship in today's NFL but he had some great weapons and he had a living legend on the other side of the ball who had won without a star QB once before.
Lets start with: What if's. Kinda where this all started right? Different scenarios usually brings out the brightest.. At least sometimes..
Actually, I would like to see GENO play, and play alot so as to get a sense of how good and what possibly his celing is, as this is a very important year, because if things go as most pronosticators are predivting for the JETS, then they will probably have a nEW COACH and a very high draft pick, and with the class coming out in 2014, it would be nice to know if GENO is the future, or we need to draft a BRIDGEWATER, HUNDLEY, MCCARRON, MURRAY etc. We know SANCHEZ is not the future but we need to find out about GENO!
This string of posts is about as bad as it gets on this board. So if a player is not drafted in the first round, he is not worthy of a starting spot in the NFL. Or does that just apply to QBs? It's pretty amazing then, that some of the NFLs best QBs of all time were not first round picks. Montana was a third round pick. Favre was a second round pick. Brady was a sixth round pick. Some of today's best QBs were passed on by many teams - Brees and Rodgers. I won't go through the loooooooong list of first round or top 3 pick QB busts over the years. Anyone who pretends they know whether a QB will be successful based solely on his college career is full of shit.
Wow. If you watch college football games that makes you an expert? Who would have known!!! If only I watched more college football, I could be an self-proclaimed internet message board personnel expert instead of a lawyer. How stupid was I???? WVU had a horrible defense last season and that was the main reason they went on the losing streak at the end of the season. Smith was brilliant all season long (with the exception of the bowl game), but that was based on what I watched. Very few QBs come out of college NFL ready. Luck was NFL ready. Griffin and Wilson had the benefit of surrounding talent and coaching that was smart enough to limit both their roles until they grew as the season progressed. You can't judge every QB by last year's class. Rodgers sat on the bench for years. Eli Manning sat for most of his first season. I could go on and on. Can we let Smith play in enough NFL games to make an informed judgement? College football and the NFL are two different sports when it comes to playing QB.
There are no guarantees that any of them are going to be NFL stars or starters or which ones will and which won't. And there is no way to tell if the guy the Jets think is the next "guy" will be around when the Jets pick in 2014. Scouts Inc. and McShay came out with a 2014 top prospect list and only two QB's were in the top 30 - Bridgewater and Hundley. Hundley is a sophomore. Absent some great play by the group you mention, 2014 does not appear to be 2012 or 1983 revisited. That's why you draft a potential franchise QB when you get the opportunity and that is why the Smith pick in the second round was such a potential steal. How about we let the kid play a little or a lot before we pass judgement on his NFL career potential?????
This x1000. Although I do believe RG3 was more NFL ready than you are suggesting. Geno Smith has thrown 7 passes (6 completed) at the NFL level and they have all been in preseason. He will be fine and I expect him to be a great QB in the future. Just because he may not start this year doesn't mean he isn't the answer. People need to remember that he is a rookie going up against a 5 year vet who happens to be fighting for his NFL career. Give the kid a break, geez.
