well im not going to pretend i know exactly what we ran in the third quarter, so i will take your word for it that it was more aggressive as far as blitzing goes. but something had to be fundamentally different somewhere. maybe the coverage was to loose. the turn around was to drastic for it to have just been adjustments made by the cardinals. the defense changed something that gave that offense some room to score points.

    1) Warner is very good against the blitz.
    2) Jenkins wasn't out there at NT for a lot of the 3rd quarter.
    3) The Cards did a good job picking up our blitzes.
    4) They went no-huddle a lot so we couldn't change up personnel.

    All correct

A few comments if you don't mind

They started to throw a lot of short quick passes, and were getting a lot of YAC. Even though the Jets were still being aggressive in sending players the DB's were laying off the line a bit to prevent the "big" play. That allowed the Cards great WR's to get a head of steam up, and get a lot of YAC.

Taking Jenkins out had a major impact. When he is in there the pocket will collapse very quickly, and makes it very difficult for a QB to step up. This was clearly shown on the Smith interception.

I think the defense is playing very well. Where teams have been getting the Jets is with TE's and underneath passes. I suspect this will be fixed during the bye

I would say 3rd down conversions...we are 27th in stopping the opponent on third down at 45%. In contrast, Buffalo is first at 19%. Who else was ripping their hair out watching Rivers dink it over the middle on 3rd and 6?

Keep the other team from scoring.

Not to be anal but you worded this all wrong. According to your stats if I interpreted them correctly, the Jets are 27th in the league allowing a 47% conversion rate on 3rd down, while undefeated Buffalo is first in the league allowing only a 19% conversion rate.

On another note, I'm with a lot of other posters. Sadly enough our defense's success, it seems, is contingent upon Jenkins's health. We don't have a comparable NT to fill in. Jenkins goes, the offense doesn't have to double team, opening up another blocker to pick up blitzes...domino effect ensues.

Yeah, not sure what the deal is with him. I'm amazed that he was the best candidate available when Mangini was hired. I find it even harder to believe that in 3 years nobody better has been available? I like the Mangini hire and all, but I hate the fact that it came at the expense of losing D Henderson. That guy just had 'it'. He was everything a D coordinator should be. I can only imagine what he could do with this crop of players on defense...

Coaching is the biggest problem this team has right now. Poor coaching strategies kept the Jets from staying in the SD and the NE games.

If not for broken coverages by the Arizona defense the Jets don't win by that margin. This coaching staff must learn to make the correct adjustments on the fly. The no-huddle killed the Jets in the 3rd quarter of the 'Zona game.

Find a suitable NT to allow Jenkins to rest. Single most important task for this D.

I want to see more zone blitz. I want to see more over load blitz. I want to see more CB/Safety blitz. Please no more of those lame send everyone at the QB Blitzes. The guy running a crossing route is wide open during those blitzes. I want Kerry Rhodes and Kalvin Pace to be rushing the QB from the blind side while B. Thomas rushes from the opposite as Kris Jenkins is bull rushing through the middle while Sean Ellis is dropping back on coverage to surprise the QB as he is ready to throw hot route to his WR on a crossing route.

  12. Good luck w/ that. The Chargers, Pats and Steelers have all been searching for suitable back-ups for their NT's for half a decade.

I don't need it. Jets need it. :)

  14. I'm just saying that 3-4 NT's are extremely hard to come by. Be happy that we may have the best one in the game right now if he can stay healthy.

Ironically, if D rob wasn't so damn expensive...he wouldve been a really good "swing guy" for this DL. He doesn't have ideal size or anything like that...but he'd be a nice change of pace to Jenkins at the nose...and he'd be a good pass rusher for blitz packages.

I know. I was just pulling a chain on you. *haha*

And don't mention Dslob. He couldn't eat space in 4-3. He won't in 3-4.

I Dont think our D is overated but we are Very stout so far against the run due in large part from Jenkins. I Think we get Miller back and he performs well along with Lowery developing our Cornerback position will be better and should improve in the pass. Also maybe Elam gets it together cause Eric Smith has been struggling.

that is the number one concern in my opinion, like many peopl have pointed out, if you can stop the run, get consistent pressure on the quarterback, and force more turnovers than the other team, your defense is generally doing very well. Well that only works if you can get off the field on third down. I would be curious to know what the percentage of sacks are per down. I would think that we get most of our sacks on first or second down, and then on third down we tend to allow long conversions. That is the one thing that frightens me. we play good on D for two downs, but just cant get off the field, and if we don't force that one big game changing turnover one week, we lose because the D can't get off the field.
