I'd switch the Colts and Bills in that list, and drop the Titans (I assume you mean that by Oilers, unless you're intepreting this as all-time). I'd slot the Raiders in that spot. Until the rise of Brady I didn't hate the Pats. Actually, I only disliked them until the Red Sox won the World Series and Boston suddenly became Philly-squared. I hate exactly two American cities, Boston and Philadelphia. Any of the teams playing in those cities are atop my hatred list. I still hate the Dolphins, don't get me wrong. I want to beat the snot out of them every time we play. But they don't compete enough anymore for me to take them seriously. The Pats are the top dogs and that makes them my most hated (besides the fact that they play in the douche capital of the Northeast). I've always hated the Colts too. Even when they sucked they seemed to be able to beat us. Then after Manning thumbed his nose at us and wound up there, it was bitter hatred forever. The Bills I'm mostly indifferent toward today, other than remembering them from their yearly "Let's Lose the Super Bowl" run. I just want to beat them because they're in the division. Otherwise I just don't care.
Yes, I was responding with 1960 to the present date in mind. If I ranked them, then the Dolphins or Patriots would be in the #1 spot. The other would be #2. #3 is clearly Buffalo. #4 is clearly the Colts. #5 is probably the Oilers/Titans, but an argument could be made for the Raiders. Remember, the Oilers and Jets were once division rivals with 1967 being the best year of the Oilers-Jets rivalry. 7-10 would be the other teams that were from the AFL- Chargers, Chiefs, Bengals, and Broncos in some order.
1. Dolphins (i hate MIA fans in any sport. furthermore this rivalry has more bad blood over time) 2.Patriots (if your going by relevance and intensity currently theyd be number 1.) 3.Steelers/Ravens/Colts (This is moving forward. Rex's history and our team identities match BAL and PIT we'll all be seeing alot of eachother as the Jets start to cement themselves as a franchise built to win. and of course IND formerly in our Division and a roadblock for any AFC team hoping to see the next round of Jan) 6.Bills (they ALWAYS seem to give us a hard time and we usually split with them. its the least interesting matchup within our conference yet usually produces some of the better games of both teams season.)
Fair enough. I interpreted the question more as "What are the current biggest Jets rivalries, in which case I slot the Pats at the top. Miami only stays at 2 because the history of bad blood is so deep over such an extended period. I can't put Buffalo over Indy because they're just not relevant enough these days. I used to despise them though. The only time I rooted harder for the Giants than the Buffalo Super Bowl was the Pats 18-1. Indy ranks third because of recent playoff history, their former place in our division where no matter how bad they were they seemed to have our number, and that bastard Manning staying in school to avoid us and being so damned good. I don't even recall much of the Oilers as an organization, and I wasn't even alive in '67. I definitely rank the Raiders higher because we play them almost every year lately. I definitely see where you're coming from though. You're viewing this as all-time. Honestly, if we look at it all-time, I think I'd rank the Colts and Buffalo higher than New England, and Miami at #1.
I was considering the entire history of the Jets. When you do that the top three rivals are the Patriots, Dolphins, and Bills in some order. There is no question those are the Jets top three rivals of all-time. In one sentence you wrote about "current" rivalries. In the next sentence you wrote about rivalries "over...an extended period" which can mean many years. I don't follow some of that. You downgraded the Bills-Jets rivalry because the Bills have not been relevant. (I agree, by the way. The Bills-Jets series the last few years has been crappy.) But then later, you elevated the Raiders-Jets rivalry because they've played each other often in recent years. Well, the Jets play the Bills more often than they play the Raiders and the Raiders have been just as irrelevant as the Bills in recent years.
Why the vikings? Number one is Miami. I hate everything Miami. Patriots are the easy second. Giants are probably third. Throw in the Broncos, fuck them.
Fair points. I think the thing is though, I didn't drop the Bills off the list, just below the Colts. The Raiders got promoted over Tennessee because we almost never play the Titans, and there's no rivalry at all, whereas there is some between the Jets and Raiders. I think we can both agree that any list that has the Dolphins, Patriots, Bills, and Colts in the top-5 for any era is a valid list. Any ordering of those teams is more a matter of perspective than anything else.
I'm old school so the Dolphins are always going to be #1 rival. Want to get my going just mention the fake spike..... Only because of the two men named Bill are the Patriots #2. If one Bill doesn't come to us and the other to them it wouldn't be that much of a rival. I remember the Buffalo days when they were kicking our ass just like the Pats had done more recently. The the coaches that kicked up this rivalry. At #3 for me is the Colts....I hate them and the Peyton snub on the Jets when he was mentioned as a possible #1 draft by us still pisses me off. The Giants are our brother from the same mother and I hope to have a NY vs NY SB some day. I likes many Giant players over the years like LT and Sims. No rivalry here unless we play each other on game day. every year the Jets would be eliminated from the playoffs I would rout for the Giants to represent the great city. I am a jets fan for life, but not a Giant hater. I don't hate the Raider, I feel sorry for them. Plus, Madden is one of my all time favorite coaches.
I am not sure I agree with you about the Colts. They haven't been in our division for a long time now, and eventually they will decline, probably when PM hangs em up, but it happens to every team. Once the Colts go through a losing period, and we are no longer playing them in big games, you can probably take them off the list. The only constant I see is NE,Mia,and Buf.
