How do the Jets have a rivalry with the Cowboys, Vikings, and Eagles besides the fact that they play in the same league?
First part....look at Pats-Colts. Not even divisional rivals, but this is one of the biggest rivalries in the sport, for exactly that reason. Second part...I said the same thing in my OP in this thread...thinking back to tghe late 80s and early 90s, I hated Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Smith, Talley, etc. They really took it to us for a bunch of years. Even the infamous setting the seats on fire game on MNF. The game we beat them up in Buffalo after Byrd got paralyzed (thank you Brian Washington) when we were 17-point underdogs is still one of my favorite games ever. They keep getting high 1st round picks, they have to get good again, right?...right?
After defeating Buffalo 7 straight times from 1984-87, the Jets then lost 18 of the next 21 meetings. The only three Jets wins in that stretch were the game after Dennis Byrd was paralyzed and the two games with Pete Carroll as head coach. Jets regular season record vs Buffalo by decade 1960s: 9-11 1970s: 10-10 1980s: 9-9 1990s: 6-14 2000s: 11-9 2010s: 2-0
I'm probably leaning more towards hate, than rivalry. For some reason the Squealers don't fit into that category with me, but your right , they should do.
Current best and best future potential: 1) Patriots - they've been a thorn in our side for years. Now we're legitimately a thorn in theirs. 2) Gay Sharks - self-explanatory 3) Steelers - Tough minded, hard hitting, and a perennial playoff contender. Our evil twin team. 4) Ravens - Same reasons as the Steelers, plus the Rex history factor. Not huge yet but massive potential. 5) Colts - For now it's a post-season rivalry, and will be til Peyton retires. Hard to really hate the only other team that always has a chance of beating Brady's ass....
Yup. Much of that is Brady-Manning, but Patriots-Colts is as good a non-divisional rivalry as you'll see in sports. This thread is revealing inasmuch as folks in my age group (pushing 40) would pick Miami. We all hated the Dolphins in the 1980s. Younger fans seem to be going with the Patriots, but the Jets still hold a slight edge in that match-up in the overall historic series. The Jets-Patriots thing is more like a border war or something. First you had the Parcells defection, then he took Curtis Martin with him, then Belichick screwed over the Jets and left for NE... you get the idea. I think a lot of it stemmed from the Sox-Yankees tradition, but that was also hardly a "rivalry" until 2004. It's not a rivalry when one team kicks the other team's ass all the time. That's probably more similar to the current Jets-Pats matchup than anything.
22 years old, so I would say when I was younger it was the Dolphins. I got more into the Jets though during the early 2000's, so Patriots for me. The Curtis Martin scenario, and Bill Belichick bouncing out to NE, really made me hate the Patriots more. Plus the past 2 years have been some excellent, and competitive games... besides the rookie year for Sanchez first trip to NE, and the 45-3 debacle. Those games were obviously great for Patriots fans, but terrible games for a football fan. So Patriots 1, Dolphins 2. I should say Bills 3rd, but I always get hyped up for the Jets playing the Broncos.
I would pick the Dolphins first, and then go Pats....Colts (when they were in the AFC East), Bills, Raiders.
Dolphins then Pats. Don't know why, just is. No arguments please. I realize it's personal. I don't like the Pats, but I hate and always will hate no matter their record, the Miami Dolphins.
This is a good point, considering all the personnel of theirs we've taken in over here and I'm pretty sure we're playing them again this year (hopefully, fuck you lockout), but until we play them in the playoffs, I can't really put them in them in the rival category. Of course, if the lockout out goes into the season, we'll all be robbing, looting, and killing at a much more frequent rate then ever before and none of us will care about rivalries. Just where the nearest 7-11 is...
All-time: Dolphins (Dan Marino can suck it) Past Decade: Patriots (Tom Brady can suck it, too) The Bills and Colts easily fill out the list. Not only are/were they divisional foes, but both were good when we were sucky in the 70s and 90s. Can't really say we have a rivalry with any other team. If we were to go 6-10, then I'd be content if we went 6-0 in the division.
Yeah well, I'd be more content with 10-6 and 0-6 in the division if it meant a shot at a Super Bowl ring.
