He has been coaching in one capacity or another for almost 40 years. If it wasn't for the cancer and all the surgeries he would have probably already had a HC gig. I don't think his football knowledge is lacking in any respect but of course good coordinators are a must anyway.
Out of all the coaches remaining on the staff. Westhoff is the only one deserving of a shot at the HC vacancy, if anything, he remains on the staff to coach ST again. The tricks he employs ala Leon Washington stretchingggg out to step of bounds field a kickoff, when he could have easily ran it back was a priceless ST move. It had the opposing team tipping their hats. Thats all they could do. It set up a Keller TD catch if im not mistaken because their field was cut in half by that ingenious move.
Handing the team over to Westoff is probably the very best thing we can do in light of all this madness. It wouldn't be anything like handing the country over to Bush, that's for sure! This guy is ultra qualified!!!
The problem is, Westhoff is 60 years old, ailing, and a special teams...specialist. Has he ever been a HC before? Is he a good X's and O's guy on offense, defense or both. If Westhoff is our coach, then we'd better have Rex Ryan running the D and Mike Martz the O.
I would love to watch a season or two with Westhoff as our guy. He's like Mickey Goldmill from Rocky. Plus he knows how to use Leon.
Exactly what this guy said. Westhoff is the best special teams coach in the NFL hands down and might be the best coordinator at any position. He's an inspiring figure who brings out the most in his players, and certainly has overcome a lot. He definitely deserves the chance to woo Woody.
I hope this doesn't mean we'll lose him if we go with someone else. But he's definitely someone I could put my full support behind as HC.
The last thing the Jets need is a HC with health problems severe enough that he had to walk away from the game just last year. The Jets need some stability badly, that isnæt going to come form a 60 year old first time HC with health problems.
I think Westhoff would make a good coach, he has the atitude i like from coaches he doesnt take any bs from anyone and isnt afraid to yell when ever unlike mangini, i worry about his health too, their must be so much stress when being the head coach of a team i dont think he can handle it.
Gansz was a poor head coach and had a 4-11-1 record in 1988. He should have had a 3-13 record, but he managed to get a tie and a win from his two games with... the Jets.
I have no idea why we would hire a special teams coach, much as I like the guy. It did work for Baltimore though. let's be honest, of course his guys play hard for him. A lot of them are scrubs trying to make an impression.
I love the Mike Westhoff story. Plays C and LB in college (Parcells was DC). Starts coaching in the NFL at the OL and TE. Becomes ST coordinator and excels at it. Becomes typecasted as "the" ST guy. Overcomes cancer. What's not to like. Plus he's got a cane. He can beat the crap out of people with it without remorse. I doubt it happens though which is unfortunate. Harbaugh wanted off ST and pitched Reid for a new role which he gave. Westhoff is completely typecasted.
