Pats trade for Wes Welker http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/03/05/welker/index.html They Pats sure seem busy.
Already posted...and as I said I don't understand it. Regardless of whether the contract has a poison pill or not a second rounder for Wes Welker isnt smart.
The real question is, why did the Dolphins cooperate with the Patriots? If they don't open trade talks, Pats overpay and they get a 2nd round pick. If Pats back off... they keep Welker anyway, who has been good for them. Instead, they cooperate? I don't get it. What am I missing?
The Dolphins cooperated because they had the upper hand. They received a second round pick and a seventh round pick. Who the heck wouldnt? Wes Welker isnt worth a 5th round pick, let alone a 2nd.
There is no poisen pill. They flat out traded. The offer sheet is viod, and the pats sit down and work something out with Welker. The fish made a clean trade for the pick For a team like the patriots the welker trade IS a smart move. Everyone around here thinks since the jets are building with the draft ( like the pats did/do) that it is terrible to do anything but use the draft. The fact is the pats are an established superbowl caliber team that needs to replace Troy Brown right now. They do not need a rookie who they can develope. They have there core established. How did there second round pick work out last year? Injured all year and torn acl in the indy game. Welker is a great slot player, with a ton of moter, good hands and a versitle player. He is a young Troy Brown. he has alot of upside and to think he will not improve in a much better situation and with a much better qb is foolish imo. There draft pick was basically a early third rounder. They have 4 extra mids from Adam V and 2 first rounders. They can easily trade up or down in a draft loaded with wr. Make more pics, etc etc.
:breakdance:  a 2nd rd pick wasn't bad enough they ahd to throw in a 7th? I am loving this Pats offseason so far.
The Jets trade just shows the value of a second round pick. In no universe is Wes Welker worth a second and seventh if THOMAS JONES is only worth moving back spots in the second round.
That or the bears are the dumbest team on earth. There is no way anyone does this deal for what we got him for. Who cares, this is a great pick up.
This just reminds me tons of the McCairrens deal that we made a few years ago. Overpriced young reciever with decent upside but have to give up a pick 2-3 rounds too early to get him. Not that I have any problem with this.
Welker is going to get 1.7 per year. He has comparable stats to Dion Branch. He also has the ability to return kicks well. When Branch walked the pats really missed him. He is out in Seattle getting 6.5 million a year now. They got a first round pick for Branch. That pick can be traded down into a few picks. They still have the original first rounder giving them two firs round picks. They burned a 2nd on Welker, but have two first rounders They picked up another Dion Branch/Troy Brown, for a fraction of the money they would have had to pay Branch. They also netted a extra first round pick when Branch walked. The kid had comparable stats to Dion in a horrible system, with a bad QB. Tons off upside in this kid with Brady in that offense. With Brown retiring and Branch in Seattle, this was a good move. After watching this kid I saw a ton of upside. The 7th rounder was a extra from when Adam walked. They have 4 late round picks from that. To keep
first off, yes he can return kicks- poorly. The man averaged about 22 yards a KR(which is terrible) and 9 yards a PR whic is not good. Secondly, there was nothing wrong w/ Miami's system it was the players and Miami had to throw alot this year b/c thye were always behind in games and Harrington & Culpepper can't read defenses so they always checked down to Wes. The man only average 10 yds a rec, that is almosr RB like #s. The man also has ONE TD in 3 years. He is a scrappy player, the type of player most teams would like to have but he is no way worth a 2nd and 7th rd pick, if it was just the 7th it would have been a good trade but either way he's nothing more than a 3rd WR.
