Not completely sold yet but the pick is starting to grow on me. Dominating the senior bowl gives me hope that his size won"t be as big of a problem as I initially thought. Out scouts nailing last year's draft is another good sign. i am sure we all have some PTSD from prior drafts as Jet fans.
My thought exactly. On top of what you say, this is a hobby for us fans. It is the job on the line situation for Joe D and Saleh. If they are fine with this choice than I am too.
The question for me is how much is he going to contribute right away? Because we are, for good or ill, in a win now window of at most two seasons. I'm also thinking the FO may be convinced Becton is going to be alright, and/or the OL isn't going to look as bad as it has with a savvy vet who can change things at the LOS behind center. Whistling past the graveyard, most likely, but that's my take, for what its worth. Go Jets.
What else can be taken away from the post? Reaching at 15 for a prospect the NFL charitably had in the late 20's is just extraordinary value given away.
Because half of the top 10 list was also taken before pick 13? The point I was responding to is that if he was truly that good he would have been off the board already. That’s a lazy opinion and my post illustrates it. You somehow ended up even more confused.
What you are overlooking is that the jets are in a win-now mode, with a swiss cheese OL to protect Rodgers currently. As much as you don't want to hear it, Rodgers is their QB, and no DE can protect him. Can McDonald do that? Who knows now if Rodgers will even be here "in 2024 and beyond" as you say. But I feel so comforted by your words that the DE position WILL be covered. As for Saleh liking to rotate the DL, good grief, they now have SIX DEs who all merit playing time???? They tried the same approach last year (DE to the max) and free agent DE Jacob Martin saw so few snaps at DE they traded him for almost nothing. I was surprised LAST year with Douglas using his final 2022 pick on DE Clemons in the 4th round. Especially since he had used a #1 on DE Johnson. His LAST pick in 2022 a DE? His first pick this year a DE? SIX quality DEs on the roster now? DE Bryce Huff, a carbon copy of McDonald, just resigned? How many DE do you want? Outside of this message board, most of the comments on the McDonald pick that I read have been "major reach," "puzzling pick," "bad fit" and "same old jets.". Even the gang green headline was "shocking." Sorry, KY, you are in minority on this one defending this pick. Oh well, you probably cheered for days after Zach Wilson was drafted. Since you want us to look at" 2024 and beyond," let's go for TEs , RBs, and more DEs today. The jets certainly DON'T need DT, LB, OL or safety do they? After all, as you say, Saleh really likes to rotate his DL, right? Too bad, you doesn't have SQUAT at Defensive TACKLE TO rotate and has more DE than any other team in history. But as you say, we must keep ALL six DEs fresh for their, what, 10 snaps per game. Maybe we draft another DE with our last pick in 2023. After all we had a first round AND a 4th round pick at DE LAST year. And another at round 1 THIS year.
His larger point is that cherry picking examples of anything is meaningless. It's like saying Tom Brady is evidence that you shouldn't draft QBs until the 6th round. The consensus on McDonald was that he was not worthy of a first round pick. The consensus isn't always right, but it has a higher hit rate than any individual GM. JSN was almost universally considered a better prospect than McDonald.
apparently they switched him from LB to DE during his RS sophomore year so he had limited reps at pass rusher ... he had five sacks in his last four games that year
Far reach by the Jets after fucking up the 13th pick, they went from good sound moves last year to the same old Jets who makes incompetent moronic moves that make absolutely no sense. Guess last year was a fluke or Joe Douglas had a out of body experience.
IF, big if, NYJ FO didnt piss there pants a few days ago, they could have had this deal on the table waiting to pull the trigger when they got to pick 13. If no one on the top of their board was there, they execute trade. Given 3/4 OT's were off board, they probably keep the #13 pick and then trade the 4th rounder instead--its 70 points vs 100 points. I think GBAY takes it but if not, so we are stuck with pick 42 and 43 and still negotiating. Thats a good front office right there imo. What we got are less than that.
