It will be interesting to see how the team performs if the Chiefs aren't hitting deep shots down field. *Fingers crossed* I think this is a must win. It would be really unfortunate to not hold head to head tie breakers against conference opponents in two different divisions that will be competitive for playoff spots. The Chiefs are beatable. We need to come out offensively like we did against Buffalo and we should be good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
KC is like the Pats-lite. This will solidify our plan against Gronk and the short passing game we'll be sure to see later in the season.
Yeah, I am actually worried about how they are going to attack us with that short passing game. I hope we jam and press the receivers early and often. Throw those timing routes out of whack.
lol... pass defense is so simple. All you have to do is not give up deep passes, short passes, or intermediate passes. Why can't NFL coaches figure this out?
My concern is "Finishing". This team still doesn't know how to finish games and KC is known for comebacks. I don't want to see us get ahead, then go into the Prevent defense and let KC back in the game. Bowles needs to impress on the team that the game isn't over until its over. KC came back against the Chargers and won the game in OT.
I never said it would be easy, but let's not pretend that there isnt a happy medium between getting pecked to death and giving up 50+yd bombs. This secondary needs to find it fast, or SEA/PIT/AZ will be slaughters.
at 2-1 i dont know if things will be looking up... as we have seattle, pitt, arizona mostly on the road right after. 2-1 is more like crucial. i agree on the mobile point. mobile qbs really nuetralize our defense and our rush. KC does scare me though. i know week 1 was ugly but they can get after it defensively and dont make mistakes. a win would be a big one
I know a lot of people hate the prevent defense, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do at the end of the Bills game. 10 plays, 75 yards and took 2:45 despite the fact that they called 2 timeouts and had the 2 minute warning. They got the ball back with 10 seconds left in their own 15. There's a reason that defense has existed for so long and smart coaches continue to call it with a lead late in games; it works. That drive wasn't reflective of our actual defense and was the only long scoring drive they had.
Maybe someone needs to impress it on Bowles first so he remains aggressive and doesn't go into that passive, pussy ass prevent D.
It worked last night, but against a better QB it very well may not have. I have seen it fail as many times as I've seen it succeed, if not fail more times. I hate it and always will. I think a lot of coaches go to it, not so much because it's great and works, but because they get tentative, conservative, and don't trust their D.
When teams are down late, their only option is to air it out. Playing prevent defense in these situations is no different than blitzing on 3rd and long, or dropping 8 guys into the EZ on a game ending hail mary. You're just taking advantage of what you know the other team HAS to do.
Listen As a long suffering loser this is the most bullish I have been since '98. And in this offseason and pre-season I figured we were 7-9 team so remember that. We are gonna beat the Chiefs. We are gonna beat the Steelers, we have a stacked roster and if we clean up the stupidity, and if Bowles can adjust, we are in AFCCG The talent Macc has brought us is real. Do we need health? Of course. Do we need Bowles to step up? Of course. Do we need an odd lucky break? Can't hurt. But man we are going 12-4
I think the prevent is over used for sure. However, last night was text book prevent and it worked perfectly.
Alternative universe. BMarsh drops the onside kick. The Bills recover and score the game winning TD. At 10:15 PM Friday night you post that you knew all along that we were a 7-9 team and we should fire Bowles for not going for two. My point? It's a long season and this was just one game. On to KC.
it 100% did not work. the bills scored with 2 timeouts and well over a minute left. had they got the onside kick, we might have lost that game. we didnt make them use all that much time at all. under 3 minutes and they preserved both timeouts. they were able to even force us to punt instead of us being able to kneel it out. we didnt prevent them from scoring or force timeouts. also, you completely ignore both end of half drives, where boh teams went right down field. there is a reason the saying "prevent prevents you from winning' exsists and why its almost universially not used across the league anymore. it worked better 20 or 30 years ago before the passing rules changed. now teams throw 50+ times a game on the regular and are more adapt at moving the chains. either way, take away the big plays and our defense still has looked poor and unprepared
the thing is he doesnt even need to be agressive... you can still play a safe defense while not being 100% aggressive. whats wrong with just 2 deep man underneath 4 man rush, tigher coverage?
i salute your optomism. that said we play four teams what won 10+ games last year including 2 of the highest win totals from a year ago. 3 of those games are on the road. we could play outstanding football and STILL be staring 2-4 or 1-5 in the face. all 4 of those are good teams, the 3 we play on the road are all good home teams. none of the 4 qbs turn it over much, and 3 are all-pros, including 2 superbowl champions. our december schedule is the worst weve seen in,... literally decades. 2-2 would be a blessing. if the jets can go 2-2 these next 4 games that would be enormous for us.
