It's going to come down to the Jets and Dolphins fighting for the division. If we can avoid a late-season collapse, we should be fine.
Sanchez has been put in a much better situation to succeed because of the new additions surrounding him. LT will be the ultimate dumpoff threat out of the backfield when Sanchez has to check down. Holmes is great after the catch and will work the middle of the field to open up Edwards and Cotch for the deep home run balls. Ditto for Keller. These guys were brought in to make Sanchez's job easier and give him more safety valves so he doesn't need to do too much. I think we've accomplished that quite nicely.
I really can't agree with that- Miami was 22 in overall defense last year. 24th in passing defense and 18th in rush defense. What have they done to improve this? Giving BM that huge contract fucked them on the other side of the ball.
To me it's not a question of whether Sanchez can do it. It's whether Sanchez will do it. Mark needs to take control of the weapons at his disposal and make it clear that he decides where the ball is going to go. Last season Braylon mentioned that Mark was starting to demand things in the huddle. If he started doing that as a rookie he shouldn't let anything stop him from leading the huddle now.
Alot of people have us as the favorite and thats cool but until we out play the pats and win the division where not the "Class" of anything.
If the folks at WEEI have stopped drinking the Belli-Kool-Aid, things have changed in Boston. Next thing you know, Fred Smerlas will actually say something intelligent on the air.
I disagree- What's wrong with going into the season being confident? Pats and Colts fans have been doing this for years. I always go into the season thinking this is our year, this year I actually believe it is. There's no point in thinking otherwise until proven wrong. It's just the opposite of what you believe, go into the season thinking "oh shit" doesn't help anyone. Rex changed the attitude in the locker room so it's time for the fans to catch up.
I agree 100%... Its all about Shonn Greene. I was furious when we let TJ go, and I'll be even more livid if Greene gets hurt and misses a bunch of games. We really don't have a safety net at RB. All that potential in the passing game will go to waste if teams know we can't run the ball. If Greene stays healthy I LOVE our team, and expect us to win the division ... but I hate the idea of going into a season with an oft-injured starter at RB, and very little insurance behind him without TJ and Leon.
For a 9-7 team who got a few breaks down the stretch, I think we're getting way too much hype. There are a lot of things to feel good about - a very solid Defense that should get better, a great running game, etc. But there are also a few major question marks - will Sanchez continue to develop? Is the passing game fixed now that we have a few more playmakers? Will our Special Teams be OK after losing Feely and Leon? One thing I do agree with though...The Jets were not complacent and content to rest on their accomplishments from last year. For better or worse, they are trying to improve and have made some extremely aggressive changes. We'll see how it all works out.
I don't think Sanchez HAS to have a breakout year, rather, just can't give games away like he did last year. If he can limit turnovers and just get the job done, thats all well need I think.
I think a lot of the hype is warranted. The Jets may have gotten a couple of breaks in weeks 16 and 17, but nobody gave them a break in the playoffs. We have a sophomore HC and QB, in addition to a young core of playmakers, all gaining deep playoff experience. When you hear a player talking about that kind of experience, and i mean pretty much every player that's been there does, you can tell how valuable that is. Now we bring in some pieces to the puzzle that we needed to move forward (Cromartie, Wilson, Taylor, Conner, LT), take a couple of risks on young players (Ducasse/Slauson, Holmes), keep the main core of talent... The sky is the limit for this team. Rex and Sanchez are the deciding factors. Rex, I have the utmost faith in. Sanchez looks very promising and now has a more dynamic set of weapons at his disposal. The SOJF in me is screaming at the top of his lungs not to buy into the hype. Then I punch that motherfucker in the mouth and stuff him in a locker. We deserve this hype. It's been a long time coming.
Agreed, man. The regular season didn't go our way but we were fortunate enough to make the playoffs. Once we were in we showed we belonged. Defensively, what we were able to do to an extremely potent San Diego team was very impressive. Offensively we'll still have to see how things go but defensively I'm really confident going into next season. Even if the offense isn't as potent as we all expect it to be, we'll still be a formidable team because of our defense.
We were this close to being 8-8 or just flat out missing the playoffs. We Didn't win the division, we Split w/NE and got swept by the gays of the east.. IOW, We ain't "the team to beat" or none of that until we start to dominate.... On paper? Paper doesn't win rings
A 9-7 team that only lost two games by more than 5. One of which was a game in which Sanchez threw a pick six and fumbled in the end zone for a TD against the eventual Super Bowl Champs. The defense only allowed one TD (and one FG) in the 4th quarter after the offense sucked all day. The Jets were much better last year than their record indicated. That's why they were able to beat Cincinnati and San Diego and had Indy on their heels for half a game until Greene was hurt (especially since Sanchez started to settle down at the end of the year and into the playoffs).
DeOssie must have joined the station after I left Boston. I can't even imagine how bad he must me on the air if he is worse than Smerlas. Smerlas is a clown; the guys he broadcasts with actually used to laugh at him.
That's the way I see it also, now with upgrades to this team I really feel the New York Jets are going to be fun to watch this year.
Last season we won (or at least should have) whenever we held opponents to 17 points. The defense allowed about 14 points per game last season. The offense should average over 20. We can run on anyone and we've got the weapons to spread defenses out. That's a recipe for success.
Does it all come down to Sanchez? No, we have a well rounded solid team. If Sanchez can deliver we can compete past the regular season and be dangerous in the playoffs.
