Seriously, we’ll know how involved woody really is in this if the OC we pick spouts that he can and will fix Zach. Zach should be an afterthought at this point, not the focus.
Johnson bought the team in 2000. The team went to the playoffs 6 times in the first 11 years (10 if you don't count the Al Groh year where he didn't have much to do with that team.) Included in those 6 playoff appearances we're back to back AFC championship games. Was everyone calling him a dumb fuck then? He's George Halas compared to Hess. P.S. His brother hired Gase. Leon Hess hired Kotite. Kotite!!
It's been clear for some time that Zach Wilson was going to get LaFleur fired. How much LaFleur had to do with Zach not developing is an open topic but it is beyond clear that Zach's inability to do simple things was shortening LaFleur's job expectancy in the Jets organization. If Saleh wanted to keep LaFleur he had to jettison Zach Wilson and once he decided not to do that he made the choice of who would survive the first purge. Now Saleh has the choice of whether to jettison Zach Wilson or lose his job and likely Joe Douglas job during or after next season. It will be interesting to see if he learned anything from being forced to fire his friend.
Woody had 2 choices- keep MLF and go out big game hunting at QB because he knows Zach will never work here with MLF (Zach won’t work with anyone because he just sucks, but suspend reality for a moment). That would cost Woody upwards of 50m per year and likely draft picks from the team as well. Or… he can fire MLF, hire an OC plus staff for a couple million dollars, pay for a middling QB like Brissett who’d make a good long term backup anyway, roll with Zach one more year and then fire everyone if it still doesn’t work out. This smells a lot more like Woody holding JD and Saleh accountable for drafting Zach and not letting them just walk away from it after 2 seasons. I think he’s forcing them to make do with what they built and suffer the consequence if he still sucks. As much as I loath Zach as a player I don’t blame Woody. You’ve got Becton being worthless, Mims being near worthless, E Moore crying for a trade, Corey Davis severely underperforming, a litany of awful FA signings on the OL, and Zach being worthless. If JD didn’t have an all world draft this past season his track record would be absolutely atrocious. His track record up to this past draft has been atrocious. This is their last shot, and I don’t think they’re going to be afforded the opportunity to throw around big money.
I liked your Post up where you up to where you said.."He finally made a good hire in JD…" Douglas looks like Einstein compared to Idzik and McCagnan but we would not be in the mess we are in now after "letting him run it" Things are a little better with Douglas but thats it
Don't forget jettisoning Zach would be admitting the great GM JD made a colossal mistake picking a franchise QB bust Saleh and JD got themselves between a rock and a hard place..congrats!
He's the owner. The buck stops with him. There's other topics to hate on Woody but this is not one of them.
You either have your mistakes or they ruin you. Deciding that ZW is a bust and moving on has a certain amount of power in the action. If he just crashes and burns on his third opportunity he's going to blow everybody up in the process.
No one is absolving Woody of anything, its just the cold hard recognition of what the facts are. Woody will be the owner of the Jets for the foreseeable future. That's not changing. Woody will step in from time to time and make an executive decision since there's no real President of Football Operations to make it for him. That's not changing either. Saleh and JD both are now being looked at differently because of the results on the field. No one cares if the OL got hurt or the QB sucks although drafted really high. The record is what the record is and its not good enough either for JD or for Saleh. Next year Saleh needs to win or go home. JD might get one additional year to save his job. Woody won't be around in 25 years down the road as he's pretty damn old today. Here's a terrifying thought: His moron brother Christopher might inherit the team. That would be a catastrophe but could very well happen.
I've explained It over and over. It was beyond one guys fault for the dysfunction. Woody has done this shit before and it's been for the worse. It's not hard when you look at the bigger picture. Can't wait to see the results though. Woo hoo! I'm sure it'll absolutely be different this time. Sigh.
I’m aware, which is why the leash is so short. I think they’re gonna have to put every egg they have into developing him and getting him ready. I’m betting the #1 question they’ll be asking OC candidates is how they believe they can correct Zach’s flaws.
Maybe it's for the same reasoning that everyone keeps reminding me of why MLF neeeed to be fired because of the 6 game losing streak to end the year. Woody Is by far worse. 12 years without making the playoffs... In those 12 years, what's his overall record as owner of this team? Guys a clown.
George Young was 26-46 going into 1984. Obviously a different era but rebuilds are never pretty at the start. Imagine if the Giants fired him and Parcells after 83?
Different era as you pointed out. Turnarounds happen a lot faster these days. 26-46 wasn't a death sentence 40 years ago. It is today...
Having said that if the OL and QB are still major issues and we regress or barely stay afloat next year I’m all for a house cleaning.
The Jets are 11-23 since the 2-14 tank season. Really there is no reason to believe that they're going to make the leap from bad team to playoff team at this point. It's going to take a sea change in the offense to get them over the hump and there's no reason to believe they're capable of that. Even acquiring a prominent QB like Derek Carr is no guarantee the offense doesn't suck next season. They also need to fix the OL and acquire another RB for depth. They probably should also acquire a backup QB capable of both holding the fort and staying healthy.
Its not just the QB problem JD and Saleh has to fix. The OL is perhaps an even bigger issue. That was supposed to be JD's wheelhouse. So far? Mixed results as the OL has gone from awful to serviceable back to awful. Depth is an issue. Signing really old guys off the scrap heap to play on the OL may have been JD's only option as I hate to think it was his first choice. The OL got old really fast and at the same time. Injuries happen and is not within anyone control however, depth is within JD's control and he better address this issue PDQ or just like Saleh, he's out of a job. He's 20-45 and honestly, if it wasn't for this last draft? He'd be wearing just as big a bullseye as Saleh's.
I believe Woody when he says he had no involvement in firing MLF. I do believe Woody probably met with JD and SALEH and discussed that he was very disappointed in the offense in general terms. However, I equally believe Woody made it known it was their decision to what they believe is best for the NYJ. Objectively speaking, when JD and Saleh looked at the numbers there was no choice but to fire Lafleur. It was pathetic by any objective measure.......
turnarounds happen a lot faster nowadays you said. But remember what he took over for and what was on our roster at that time. Also if that’s the case then that means next year we can make a huge leap if we make the right moves w the stud draft picks we have from last year. And getting a decent enough QB obviously
