Since it seems like everybody here is for offense. We have a really good chance to pick up someone good. There is a lot of talented ftee agents out trhere. We will do okay.
Im not excited about Mariota, Winston OR Cooper. Perhaps Im just a negative bastard when it comes to this team but Mariota looks like Kaepernick to me, Winston with the off field stuff and unless Cooper becomes Calvin Johnson or Dez Bryant, I cant get excited picking him at 4.....I don't know...I just don't have a solid feeling about any of those guys. I just don't love picking a WR that high. If we end up with a new GM, the safe play for him would be to trade down if possible and go O line......the " Decastro" type guy of this year's draft..( I assume theres an elite OG coming out). Would you guys be on board with that if we did it or are you that steadfastly set on picking one of those two QBs ?
Based on need and who's available, here's how I see the draft starting: Titans - Mariota (No reliable QB on the roster) Bucs - Winston (unless they want someone else for some reason) Jaguars - Cooper (Gets Bortles a solid target) Leaving us in the position to draft who? No one worth a fourth overall. Trade down.
When you look at what Dez is doing... and guys like Mike Evans, ODB, you can't help but want a game changing WR of your own... If Tennessee and Cutler are doing their little home coming thing and Mariota goes to TB, we could be set up with Winston. But if not... AMARI!!! We need a guy like THAT, that will swing momentum with hugee plays.
I wish we would consider trading our pick if both QB's aren't available... We could try to trade it for a mid 1st and a 2nd if there's a team desperate or stupid enough to do it. We could still pick one of the top WR with a mid 1st rounder...
The Jags just took two WRS in the second round last season (Lee and Robinson), why would they take another Wide Receiver, when they have greater needs? I expect the Jaguars to select Shane Ray, Randy Gregory , or Leonard Williams.
Do you honestly think that NFL scouting departments and GMs are influenced by what the media says? Get real, guy, you're smarter than that. Similarly trying to say that the 18th or 29th pick are just as good as the 4th is moronic. Empirical facts my ass.
Can't see the Jaguars taking another receiver. Allen Robinson was playing very well before going down, Marquise Lee has been okay and has a high ceiling, they're really high on Allen Hurns, and you can't forget that Justin Blackmon is coming back (despite his problems, he's still an incredible talent). I'm not sure what they'll do with Cecil Shorts, but I assume they'll let him walk. The Jaguars are either taking Leonard or an OL.
In this scenario we could get a future 1st as well. Trading down from the 4th overall pick is a big deal. Unfortunately to trade down you need a partner, and I don't see that happening unless someone falls in love with a player who is still on the board.
I love how people keep saying "Jags will take Cooper, they need a weapon for Bortles." Jax took Robinson and Lee high last year, and will be getting Blackmon back who they took a few years ago high. All three of these guys are good with the potential to be great, they won't take Cooper when they have needs almost everywhere else.
Quite frankly, unless the jets were absolutely bend on one specific name for the 2015 draft, in which case only the #1 slot would do, then the difference between 2-4 is not as drastic as people think and by no means the end of the world as some seem to IMPLY. IMHO the notion that we ever had a chance to be #1 is utter nonsense. This team did no more have a chance to be number 1 on the draft as it did of making the playoffs. We are bad but not that bad, not even close. So if our target was Mariota and the consensus here seems to be he will go number 1, then we never, ever have a chance. Secondly, if we can not get ourselves a true and immediate impact player at 4-5, be it on offense or even a pure pass rusher in defense then we need to mail in the season and fire the whole draft evaluation team. Further, I firmly believe that no way no how both QBs will be gone when our name is called. I think at least one, possibly Winston will be there. This is not the Andrew Luck sure thing draft. Either of the two would most likely not be a starter in 2015. It is far more likely that we pass on Winston than for him not been there when our name is called.
This is why I don't like using total yards to rank defense. Using points against they have Clemson at #6 and no one else in the top 15, BC and Louisville were both ranked 19th, Florida 24th and everyone else was ranked over 40th. Miami would be one of your top 15 but they were 43rd in points against.
It's not always as clear as "You can tell a player's talent/value based on how high he was drafted". Nearly every team coddles their high pics giving them every (and I mean EVERY) chance to become a star. They get the trainers. The get the assistant coaches. They get first team reps every day on the field to develop their skill set and become noticed. Compare that to a late round pic or even a walk on. Coaches rarely even know their names. They get zero extra help. They get pushed to the side so the 'real' team can practice, and thy almost never play on Sunday. Given two players from the two groups above that are close or even the same talent wise. Which player will go on to become a player and which player will wander around the NFL looking for a home. - or - I could have just written a higher draft pic becoming a better player is a self fulfilling prophesy
Wouldn't mind having him because he's cheap. BUT I wouldn't mind having him as in... he never sees the field other than preseason..
