Our D was good in '01 but we relied on TOs, we had a ton of Tos and we scored a bunch of densive Tds that year but after the Miami shutout at Miami they stopped turning it over and we began to struggle. The week before when we beat oak gannon was harrassed all day by Abe but Abe was sick and misse the playoff game and we gave up 38. We won w/ a great running agme and veryg ood D in 2001. In '02 we were horrible the 1st half but put it together the 2nd half and played very well including a decent performance at oak on a Mon Night. The D did all it could against an explosive oak offense but when your O can score it put too much pressure on that D which wasn't a great one and couldn't withstand that pressure.

All I remember from '01 and '02 was that people were running up and down our throats. Was it 02 or even 03 when the Raiders ran the ball their first 20 offensive plays and scored a TD on us? What a pathetic bunch we were that game. We had good players, but our pass defense was a bit overrated because people would run for 180 a game on us and didn't need to pass.

I think the key play was the Richie Anderson fumble at midfield. Our O was really moving and that play made it a 2 score game instead of 1.

That was '03, the start of '02 opponents were running it down our throats but that stopped in the midle of the year.

That raider game was 2003 and the funny thing was we actually ended up winning that game 27-24.

I think both in 01 and 02, the run defense was really terrible in the 1st half, then respectable in the 2nd, skewing the finals numbers a bit. The 2003 defense was truly terrible the entire year.

Guys, this is going to sound weird, but the Garner TD run was actually a mistake by the Raiders.

    Bear with me on this!

If the Jets had stopped him, great. They get the ball back and have a chance to tie or win the game. That was obviously the best case scenario for the Jets.

If Garner gets the first down and is thenb tackled, it's over, because the Raiders just run out the clock with a new set of downs. That was the worst case scenario.

BUT, by actually scoring a TD, the Raiders put the ball back in Vinny's hands. He drove the Jets close to another TD. If he had scored, the Jets recovered an onside kick and get a Hail Mary into the end zone the game could have gone the other way.

I'm not saying it's likely! I'm just saying that the Raiders scoring a TD was actually a mistake because it left a POSSIBILITY of the Jets winning the game, while Garner trotting out of bounds after picking up the first down would have made it impossible.

Okay, I've laid myself open there, take your best shot... but I stand by the logic of my statement even if it sounds daft!

I guess you forgot about 2001. When Trung candidate ran for 197 yards in his first career start. Our defense was God awful in 2001 and part of 02'.

I was referring to the Oak game where they ran ti down our throats but you are right it was happening early in '01 but not nearly as bad as early '02.

The D was awful early in both oft hose years but very good for the 2nd half and in '01 the D carried us a good portion of the year creating TOs. Vinny didn't even have a 200 yard passing day until around Week 14.

Back in 98 – when Vinny was only 39…now that was a season. Chad totally choked in Chokeland and showed the world how to beet him; it was the end of his usefulness.

No question it was Vinny. Vinny threw the ball downfield. Chad rarely if ever threw the ball longer then 5 yards in the air in 2002. Defenses played soft against Chad waiting for him to make mistakes. He also incredibly lucky, by my count he had 21 easy sure thing interceptions dropped in 2002. Think about that out of 24 balls thrown that should have been intercepted only 3 were caught. About every good break that could have gone his way went his way that year. Almost like he sold his soul to the devil and has paid for it since. I would put two of Kenny O'Briens seasons ahead of Chad's 2002 season.

Jam the receivers and blitz the living hell out of him. Sadly, that is all you have to do to beat Penny.

Your right it was 2002 and 2003 when our D became terrible. Before the 2002 season we were $28 millon over the salary cap and had to dismantle our defense. During those 2 years we really only had 3 legitimate defensive players that could have competed for a starting job on anotehr NFL team. Our defensive talent in 2002 and 2003 was about as bad as you will ever see from in an NFL team.

I say Penny. No single player turned a season around the way he did that year.

Ereryone seems to forget that McNair and the Titans were 2 & 4 just like us that year ? but they made it to 11 & 5. What we did wasn?t so unique.

chad came in to a team with a 0-4 record and won the division, we kicked colt ass plus a second round berth. Vinny's team was good through out so advantage chad.

Actually the team was 1-2 when he took over the team in jacksonville. Chads record was 8-4 as a starter really 8-5 counting jacksonville which he played the entire game but a couple of plays. By contrast Vinny only lost one game as a starter in 1998.
