Heres the most information I can find, but for anyone who questioned Mangini here and said he simply had Vilma in his doghouse is out of control. Vilma clearly has been hurt and too stubborn to do anything about it. Mangini made his decision for a reason.

    Per Fanball.com:

11/07 Jets: Vilma to require microfracture surgery?

    The News

While coach Eric Mangini announced Tuesday that Jonathan Vilma will undergo surgery on his injured knee, he wouldn't speculate on when the linebacker will return to the playing field. An orthopedic surgeon tells Newsday, however, that he believes the injury to be very serious. Dr. Johnny Benjamin said that Vilma would likely have only needed a couple of weeks of recovery time if his surgery was simply to clean out bone fragments in the knee, and the fact that the team placed him on injured reserve already is not a good sign. He went on to say that the injury could require microfracture surgery or the insertion of a bio-absorbable screw in the knee. "Athletes who have those do quite well," he said, "but it takes about a year to fully rehab from it and usually it's not until the second year that they're back to their old self."

    Our View

Vilma is obviously out for the season, but this news is not good for a defense that simply can't afford the long-term loss of its best playmaker. The two-year timetable is all speculation at this point and Vilma's doctors have indicated that the injury isn't career-threatening, but at this point it seems unlikely Vilma will be ready to play by the beginning of the 2008 season.

This is a tough hit for the Jets if he's out for 2 seasons. I hate it when a key player is lost for a season never mind two possibly. Well, it's all speculation for now hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds.

Here are a couple of random thoughts:

if they said which knee it was, people would automatically assume it was either the old condition that had finally acted up, or a new injury if it was on the other knee.

if he needs to have micro-surgery, it will be a much longer recovery/rehab period.

if it is simple scoping out some garbage and cleaning out some stuff, it would only require a few weeks on the sideline. If that turns out to be the case, then there was definitely an ulterior reason for putting him on the IR.

i dont know which scenario is true, but eventually we are sure to find out more as info gets leaked out.

Hope it went well for him today!

the thing i dont grasp is that not saying anything leaves openings for people to make statements by that doctor, it leaves everyone to think the worst is happening therefore hurting his trade value as much as if it were a major surgery and injury. so WHATS THE POINT???????

i just dont see any good reason to not just come out and say what is going on like every other player and coach in the league. something happens to a guy we hear about it on sportscenter and move on. but no this thing has to be played out for weeks and weeks.

so is it a major injury?

did he have to put vilma on ir before he would go get the surgery? if so is he that bad of a guy that he would hurt himself and team to play poorly (doesnt seem like something i would want if looking for a lb this offseason)

is mangini such a tool that its only minor surgery but he put him on ir anyways?

it just doesnt make any sense to give people all these options to make up there own mind when if he just came out and said what was going on we could say oh ok that makes sense and move the heck on.

it just stinks of something really bad and is leaving a bad taste in my mouth both for vilmas future as well as manginis attitude.

Since everyone wants to speculate, I'll do it too.

Maybe Mangini has no intentions of trading Vilma, and would rather not release the information to the public since it could come back to hurt Vilma in the future as opponents try to use any lingering effects to their advantage.

Maybe it's not a small injury, but a relatively easy surgery. Therefore, while the surgery has an excellent chance of success, the recovery period dictates the IR placement.

Maybe Mangini actually realizes it doesn't affect one damn person who doesn't wear pads or call plays on Sunday, and therefore there is no reason to tell you anything.

Maybe since everyone is tired of losing they have zero patience regardless of the utter ridiculousness of it.

Relax already. Mangini has no reason to tell you the extent of the injury. Vilma's out for the year. It doesn't make a bit of difference if he's your favorite player, he's not playing again this season no matter what, so you know all that you need to know.

Of all the problems with this team, knowing what the surgery was for is far from actually important.
