Most Jet fans have always rooted against our players. I think in regards to this topic however folks simply knocked him for so long they feel they need to keep knocking him.. I wish for a successful comeback but as much as I loved Penny when he came to us and when he ROCKED us to the playoffs and PISSED all over the colts and packers....I still do not feel he will take us back there. Prove us wrong, please. But don't say we were dreaming when next year we draft Quinn when Penny goes 3 and out......
Its strange how situations can change in a few short years. I agree with you, you'd have to be nuts not to want to see Penny succeed, especially after all he's gone through. I'm sure he has that feeling of unfinished business, and thats partially what's motivating him to make it back. The stark irony here is, under previous circumstances in years past, Penny would be making it back with a pretty solid line. A line that allowed CMart to be the NFL's leading rusher a few years ago. There was more confidence in their ability to protect a QB, and Penny was working with a set offense give or take the coordinator changes. I believe his success would be that much greater under those circumstances. But now, he has an inexperienced line, albeit one with great potential, but clearly not an elite unite as presently composed. The success of his comeback will fall squarly on that line's shoulders, and frankly, I'm worried for him. Its a new offense, and a line that might not be able to protect him consistently. It is here sadly, that he may fail to to ineffectiveness or injury. Time is often cruel to athletes, and Chad Pennington just might be running out of it.
come back to what? teams as far back as the end of 2002 knew how to shut him down. too many on here are still drinking the 2002 kool-aid. nobody wants to see him suffer from an injury. he can fully recover but that does not mean he should be starting qb material. he does not have the arm, even before the injuries. waiting for him to 'return' is like waiting for your income tax refund and getting notice that the irs is going to audit your returns for the past 3 years.
Cman, I'm usually a big fan of your posts, but this one reaks of Chad hate. In 2002, the Raiders beat him up, but without Chad that season would have been hard to watch. However, with half an arm in the 2004 playoffs, he soundly beat the Chargers. Doug Brien made it dramamtic with his sucktitude, but Chad did everything you could have asked him to. I was there, in person, to see it. The following game he lead the team to a game winning FG, but yet again, Brien sucked much ass. Don't hang that on Chad.
Wow.. Could you go back any further Fen? Anyway, I stand by that post. Chad may have been handcuffed by his coaching staff but in the Oakland game, he got beat up because either he's not very mobile or Hackett never went further than page 10 in his "400 page" playbook. In Pittsburgh, why did Edwards opt to take the knee instead of getting closer for an FG attempt? Could it have been a lack of faith in the QB? He didn't let Chad even attempt ONE pass downfield. Why Fen?... Why? Fast forward to this season's TC. We hear tails of Chad airing it out deep during practice but in a game situation? Dink and Dunk is what we get. Why is that? No protection is one reason. No rolling pocket is another. No ability to throw the ball on a rope outside the numbers is the most likely suspect. I said it last year and I'll say it again. Defenses will take away the midrange to short stuff and force Chad to throw deep. Schotts had better come up with something other than warmed-over Hackettball to address that. Our QB has his limitations. That isn't Chad hating by any stretch Fen...
Because he choked, you can't put that on Chad. Never mind a pass downfield, how about a run for positive yardage at least? Or, if you are going to sacrifice a yard and take a knee, why not at least center the ball for the kicker? If I remember correctly, Curtis Martin got a first down around the Pittsburgh 28 with about 1:30 to go and 2 timeouts. I think it was on a pass from Chad. Either way, you have the NFL's rushing title winner in your backfield and you take a knee? That's the coach. If he didn't think Pennington could complete a pass why was he in there the whole game throwing passes?
So you're blaming Herm for that? Fair enough. But tell me, if Chad had just completed a 1st down pass to martin, and with 2 TO's left, where was the faith in Pennington to get us a bit closer? Do you think Herm figured Chad would get picked outside the numbers since the Steelers probably were gonna pack the middle of a short field?
Cman right there in bold is where your post went all wrong. There was no thinking it out an idea popped in his head and he went with it.
Right, the Jets lost agaisnt pitt in the playoffs because of Chad. Brien's miscues had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Give me a break. While he did lose the game against Oakland, his play is the main reason we beat the chargers and Colts in the playoffs.
I have a strange feeling that there is a good reason why we havent seen Chad throw any long balls this pre-season. Maybe it is because of exactly what you guys are saying. All teams are completely 100% buying into the old strat against Chad. Taking away the short/mid range options and forcing Chad to throw the long balls. If you were the coach and you knew that all the teams were thinking exactly that when gaming for the Jets what would you do? Would you showcase the long ball schemes during pre-season? How is Tennesee gaming for Chad in two weeks? Do you think the coaches don't know this? I would absolutely love it if Chad came out of the gate throwing bombers and ripping apart the CBs down the field. Sounds like a good plan to me. It doesnt surprise me at all when you say that in TC Chad was throwing 40 yard bombs with good precision and decent zip. It would surprise even less that Chad hasent thrown anything over 20 yards in pre-season games. It might all be about mums the word on Chads abilities at this point. And is anyone at all surprised about this jets team not revealing things? I think not. Heres to hoping exactly that.
And I thought I had it in for Herm... :rofl2: Herm showed no faith in his Qb. Took the ball out of his hands at the biggest moment of the 2004 season. I ask again.. Why???????? You can try to pin this on Herm entirely but I just don't see it that way. For what its worth, you already know I'm no Herm fan by any stretch..
Next Level my friend... Next level.... Chad got there and lost both times. At least the Pittsburgh loss wasn't as bad as the Oakland loss. The Great Qb's have a knack for taking their teams on their shoulders. Maybe it was Edwards' fault.. Maybe it was a lack of faith in Chad. We'll never really know will we???? Win as a team and everybody gives the credit to Chad. Lose as a team with the season on the line and its the Coaches fault. No wonder Chad is HOF material and Herm is a POS.. I have to admit though that we are one helluva 1st round playoff team with Chad. Too bad they don't give out trophies for that yet..
There were seven seconds to play! Any run or pass that made any significant difference to the yardage on the FG would have been leaving them incredibly tight for calling a timeout, especially if the back or receiver got stood up. There's also the risk of losing yardage. Taking a knee allowed them to run off the 2 seconds they needed and put the ball on the side of the hashes that Brien preferred to kick from. Not saying it was a good decision, just that the reason for it (that I can figure) wasn't a lack of faith in the QB.
Shit this should be named the hindsight thread. All the xperts getting it right again. F*** me lets look forward not back. Herm is GONE , Chad is still here and Coach Mangini says he is the starter and has WAY more insight than anyone on this board. So is he wrong? Apparentley according to some of you.
The question you're asking me is "where is the faith in the QB?", so again, that's a criticism of Herm. Unless you expected Pennington to ad lib and change the play in that spot with a torn rotator cuff, it was a coaching decision that backfired, so yes I blame Herm for that. And I was supportive of Herm all the way until he annonuced he was going to KC after all the claims that he was staying, so it's not a Herm bashing thing for me. Pennington at that point had NEVER IN HIS CAREER thrown a pick in the red zone, so if there is any QB you can at least trust not to throw one there it would have been him. An incompleted pass stops the clock and they had three downs to work with, so I don't know what Herm was afraid of. Again, how about his favorite play--Curtis into the line for 3 yards? They used it ad nauseum and the one time it would have come in handy they didn't do it.
You're doing exactly what you say we're doing, the part I bolded. You win and lose as a team, Chad put them in position to win the game in Pittsburgh. The coaching staff prevented him from getting closer and the kicker missed two kicks. Had Chad gone out there in those games and thrown five picks, a la Richard Todd, you would have a more valid point. To lose in Oakland to the team that went to the Super Bowl and to play with a torn rotator cuff and get your kicker two chances to win at Pittsburgh can't all be put in the lap of the QB, as you're trying to put it. The other thing that never fails to amaze me is how fans dwell so much on negatives that they miss the easy big picture. If Chad is a bad QB how did he end up in these games in the first place? You have to win big games to get to any round of the playoffs. It's the Patrick Ewing mentality--people have discussed the missed finger roll for years now. Does anyone realize that he made two or three game winning shots just to get to Game 7? Does anyone remember that John Paxson hit the game winning shot to clinch "Jordan's" 3-peat? Any time you start applying team goals to individuals, the logic becomes flawed.
