We still haven't signed the big DT that we need. I think our D has some talent, but I don't know how we'll play against the run.
Reading these threads got me Thinking about what have we been complaining about the last few years with the Jets, even when Herman Edwards was here. When we lost to Pittsburgh, the offense was the culprit. The Two loses to New England in the 2004 season was the inability of the offense to make enough plays. Our losses and frustration has come from the offensive side of the ball, not the defense. I remember a few years back when it seemed our WR's couldn't even get open. How many balls went out in the flat to the RB if a WR wasn't open? We complained about Hackett and yes he was an issue, but we didn't have it then, and we still don't have it, a playmaker.
Thing is, an offense doesn't run on one playmaker. Its a combination of 11 guys. And we have had play makers, CMart for one. Coles for another. Lamont Jordan was a playmaker, but he never got enough touches. And, while he didn't seem that way on our team, its obvious that Santana Moss is a playmaker. We've had playmakers on the team, we just haven't made the most of their talent.
I thought this thread was about Davis, not the OL...anway, I think the only way the Jets won't be last in the league again on offense is if they get Davis...They haven't picked up anyone on offense to show me otherwise...D'Brick at # 4 is a complete waste...we can get very very good OL talent with any of our other picks...# 4 overall is not worth a OL...if the draft was thin with OL, maybe my mind would change...but Davis is going to bring another dimension to the offense, and maybe we can actually be average on offense AND have a good defense...that's a recipe of success... besides, who is Chad going to throw the ball to 10-15 yards down field??? Can anyone answer that for me??? Chad's weak arm, and Davis's awesome potential can only be good for the offense and the team...Davis IMO is the guy to take...Hawk wouldn't be bad either though... This is assuming that Leinart and Super Mario are gone by the way...
I'm hoping the Jets get Williams on the 4. Then spend the rest of the first day on offense. If they're going to get Davis I'd be fine with that too, but not on the 4. Work a trade down to the 7 and take him there if he gets by the 49ers. If he doesn't then you have either Hawk or Ferguson likely sitting there waiting for us and that'd be a fine booby prize.
Regardless of who is starting if you think that D'Brick is the next Walter Jones you gotta take him. Now I understand that you can find those 3d or 4th round guys to plug in at O line but if D'Brick is the highest player on your board and he is there you have to take him. You can't have a shitty O line and expect to be any good. As for Vernon Davis. I'm still not sold on him. I think he might be a workout warrior, or maybe its just the Jets history on drafting TE's that scares me. Regardless we are going to get a stellar pick and here is to a great jets draft.
yeah i agree. the only way i see the jets drafting him in the first round is to trade down, but hey anything can happen! but personally, i don't think it is wise to trade down to pick a specfic player. i would trade down if we got a really good deal, but so far, the 49ers have been lalbeled as taking him, so he might not go past them. i don't think TE is one of our priorites though
Here's the deal... D Brick might be the very best tackle in the draft, the issue I have with taking him at #4 is that there are other guys who can come in and be starters in this league that can be had later than the #4. There are starters and guys that can be good players along the Oline 3 rounds deep in this draft. For example: I think a guy like Kevin Boothe who I think will be a late 3rd t late 4th round pick can come in right away and start at the G. If we were to get Eslinger at the C position in the 3rd he can start right away. Ryan Cook a G/C can probably start if he had to. At the Tackle position guys like Winston, Cooledge, McNeil, Whitworth, all will be late 1st , to 3rd round guys and they all will likely be week one starters in the league. Many people also forget that Teague can also play the Tackle position so to me taking a top flight center outweighs a top flight tackle or guard because the center is the hardest position to find quality in the backup. Look at the falloff between Mawae and Kendall and Kendall used to play center. To me at the #4 spot the Jets will take a game changing player, D Brick may turn out to be a good player but he will never be a game changer. Lienart may turn out to be a good QB but he is going to need alot of people aroudn him. To me there are 4 guys that I think can take over a game and dominate it; Mario Williams who I think will be gone when we draft but if he were on the board when we picked he would be given serious consideration. AJ Hawk who I think paired with Vilma would instantly make our LB elite. Vernon Davis who I think will be better than Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. And as much as it pains me to say it because I'd hate to see the Jets take him, Vince Young. I think he has the biggest bust factor but with the right system and the right teacher he might become a top tier QB. That being said if Mario, AJ, or Duke ended up in grena nd white I'd be exstatic....
perfectly right, but with Vernon Davis they could run Double Tight sets forcing LB's to stop blitzing Alex Smith. or they could put him at WR/H-Back or just put Eric Johnson on the block when the time is right.
Why do so many of you r guys act like this is the one and only draft Tangini will have to rebuild. I personally am not a Davis fan but let's say we did get him along with a bunch of other playmakers with our other picks, essentially neglecting our oline this year and Davis caught no passes because our oline stunk, I'm sure they would address the oline next year. This is a process thar is not going to be completed with just one draft.
Why not address the oline this year? This is a deep draft for Olinemen. We can alwys get playmakers next year too, right?
Maybe and then again maybe not. 1. Vernon Davis is the best of the bunch to come along 2. Who is to say the Jets will be in a better position next year to draft a playmaker. Now we all know that playmakers don't have to be in the 1st round, but when you are in a position to get those guys and you know it, the answer is not that simple to just pass one by for next year. Offensive Linemen are very important, but you do not invest the kind of money that is necessary to sign one unless he is already proven. When we think of the things we have been complaining about over the last few years, it has been the Jets inability to move the football. It has not been the Jets defense. They can get better, but the Offense has alot further to go to get better and the line isn't the only problem on offense.
You're right. Right now, though I consider the line to be first priority on offense. Look at the roster. Either Penny or Ramsey will be our QB, we have CMart/Houston/Blaylock at RB, Baker/Jolley/Dressen at TE and Coles/JMac/Cotchery at WR. We're set at the skill positions. We need linemen.
if we would've taken heath miller last year than vernon davis wouldnt even be discussed. i wouldnt be against taking davis with the fourth. just look at the teams with a real good TE did last year. Gates instantly made the chargers better the last two years. TG has always made KCs offense one of the elite. well at least for the last few years. shockey is a beast. anyway i think just about every team with a great TE made the playoffs or had a winning record. watch how much better the browns will be if winslow actually plays. i say ditch jolley and take davis. granted i would rather draft him lower than 4 but the guy is a freak. like bush. might be too good to pass up. then if we can snag a RB with our 29, then draft a RT at 35 then our offense could actually be something to watch.
I'm perfectly fine with that, these 2 and Davis are the ones I would like to see the Jets take. If we couldn't find a starter at the tackle spot in round 3 I'd say we should go D brick but the truth is it's not D Brick and nobody at the T position. It's D Brick at the top of the list but Justice, Winston, McNeil, Cooledge, Whimper , Scott, Whitworth, O'Callaghan and Trueblood can all be solid starters in thie league for years to come. When you have a draft with 10 tackles that can all start in week one there is no reason to draft a guy that high. They all have ther knocks including D Brick but I think the #1 need for this team is to find a playmaker. A guy that can make a sack on 3rd and 7 ora guy that makes a reception on 3rd and goal at the goalline. To me it's gotta be Super Mario, Duke Davis or AJ.....
