These guys are trying to put a winning team on the field, Mangini holds a press conference everyday..I'm happy with what I get out of the Presser everyday. Chad's Dad being ill is the Jets trying to give him some level of privacy and you blame the organzation for allowing you to speculate its something else. They said family illness..I haven't heard once instance where anyone has lied. They are very measured in their responses because the press blows everything out of proportion..,ex:like Chads hit in Tampa. I understand the press has a job to do but Herm is long gone and this regime doesn't roll like that..DEAL with it!!
Just to clarify, Herm did not take over a superbowl team. He took over an aging average team that was in Parcellian cap hell which despite your suberbowl talent claims had only made the playoffs once in the previous 10 years. This team because of Parcells over spending had to be completely torn apart before the start of the 2002 season. The 2002 and 2003 Jets teams arguably had the worst talent in the NFL those years. We had 6 starters each of those years on the defense that could probably not even have made the roster of an average NFL team. The 2004 team while better than 2002 or 2003 was in much worse talent shape than this years team coming into the season. Yes I have drawn conclusions and I hope I am wrong. I don't like control freaks and incompetents that treat other people rudely for no reason. These guys bungled the draft after round two and blew a great opprtunity to upgrade this teams talent. They have treated the players and everyone who has come into contact with the team like children and with disrespect. They act like they think they are all knowing and everyone else is wrong. Essentially they are two dimwits that think they are smarter than the rest of the NFL. I have yet to see any evidence of their superior inteligence. People love coaches who are tough, create competitioin and tension. While it may play well in the papers or on message boards in reality it does not help. People generally don't don't perfom well under tension and stress. Have you ever worked in atmosphere of tension of stress. If so you might notice that almost everyone underperforms. Creating unnecessary tension does nothing. This team has a history of being one of the most disiplined in football. It is always near the top in least mental mistakes, lowest penalties and lowest turnovers. This team did not need a boot camp style atmosphere. All the wonder boys camp has done so far is cause extra injuries. While they may want to be Parcells want they don't seem to understand is Parcells has a big bark but he doesen't overwork his players. Rather he uses levity and humor to keep people loose. All these guys appear to be is Parcells wannabes but without the charsima, charm or resume. All that being said this is still a very talented team. The best talent we have had here since 2000. If we get decent QB play this could be a very good season. But without good coaching it will be a very long year. As much as dislike Mangini's arrogance and disrespect to people he comes into contact with there are manythings I like about Mangini. One of the biggest improvements is the switch to the 3-4. It may cause us some pain this year but its a good long term solution. I spent some time in KC last weekend and I recalled how much I hated the cover 2. I didn't mind it as much with the Jets as they never had the secondary talent to play aggressive football but KC has much better defensive talent particularily in the secondary. It will be painfull for KC fans watching their team get dinked and dunked to death while they are unable to stop the run. People there I don't seem to realize how painful the cover 2 can be. One of the best things about Mangini IMO is the switch the 3-4. I hope the team can play with the same intensity it has played the last 5 years. My biggest concern is that this will not be the case. Like Edwards or hate him its hard to not admit that this was a team that comes out to play hard every game. Between the Jacksonville game of 2002 and 1st game of last season the Jets played 44 regualar season games with a chance to win every game except one (2nd Pats game in 2004) late in the 4th quater. The most amazing good streak in Jets history. The team came to play every game. The jets may have not had much talent the last 5 years but they have played hard. I hope we can see the same under Mangini. If they play with the same intensity they have played with in the past they can win this year. I hope they can play with this same intensity. My biggest fear is that Tangini will lose this team early for the same reasons in my last post and we will end up in losing mode for many years. Once a team loses that belief that they can win they immediatley become a much worse team. IMO the 2004 team was not a very good team but a very lucky beneificary of a soft easy schedule. Playing 5 easy games to start the season did wonders for a very young teams confidence and belief in itself. In other words winning breeds winning just as losing does the opposite. Whats so great about the start of a season almost every team believes they can win.
Alio, I love your posts and this is another great. Who gives a flying f*** what Mikey thinks of our team, we are trying to establish some credibility after years of Hermys " see you guys in my office to discuss our injury status" I'm a huge Yanks fan but is football really such a poor cousin to Baseball in New York?
I don't understand why everyone is jumping all over him. I read the article, and this is what it said: Well put, Mike!
I'm not sure who this article is supposed to appeal to. Most real fans largely disagree with just about everything he's said ... I'd bet that a poll on here would prove that quickly. Perhaps this guy is RAJ or CJ69? He seems like a clown.
 Color coded and everything for easy use. Contrary to what the article says I think we'll see the venom increase from the press if these guys actually do start to succeed. All the hatred will have been boiling for a couple weeks, and then when the next loss comes it will spew all over the pages of the papers. We saw this a little bit with Coughlin/the Giants last year, the press was all over him initially, then laid off for a bit only to bury him after the playoff loss.
I just received this response from Vaccaro, at least he understands that he didn't speak for all Jets fans: John Thanks for the note, and for the frank nature of your words. The truth is, the only thing I care about regarding whether readers regard my work or not is in the accuracy with which it portrays their feelings, and it's becoming abundantly clear that I may have been guided along a less-than-popular path by the Jets fans I did consult about this column. Believe me, what I said in the column is the truth: it doesn't bother me how Mangini conducts his business. What I believed I was doing was representing a fan's perspective; from your letter and others, it's fairly clear I didnt represent near enough. Again. Thanks for the note. Believe it or not, I do hope the Jets give you a terrific season, having grown up a Jets fan myself (one who, for the record, used to care a great deal about the two-deep, back in the day ...) Sincerely Mike Vaccaro
That is absolutely BS! He does NOT represent a Jets Fan Perspective. Actually, He sounded like a little winey spoiled bitch who didn't get an Interview or can't do his job so he nneded to point a finger @ the JETS. Yo Mikey! It's a Privilege Bitch. LMAO
Very good point. The response John127 got is very interesting - obviously he has been deluged with messages telling him that he was correct when he said that fans couldn't care less about how tough writers have it, and further, ultimately only care about the Ws and Ls.
Thanks man, I appreciate the compliment. The fact is, Mangini does not totally ignore the media. Did anyone see him after halftime last night? He spoke quite plainly about the game. He said things like "I like what I saw on that reverse, but we need better play from some of the second string guys." Sounds like he is talking to me. He is speaking like 28 other coaches in the league do. I think the media is upset because it doesn't sound more like "Well, you know, the guys, the ones on the field, you know, the guys playing the game, they are football players. They play football. These guys. The ones playing. They gotta score. If you don't score, you can't win. Gotta play defense. Gotta play defense, and score points. That's how you win. We want to win. To win, you gotta score. We're gonna try to score some more points in the second half. But we gotta play D. D wins football games. Defense and scoring, that's what wins games." Perhaps these sportswriters should consider packing up and heading out to KC. Buttle, normally I like your posts, but I strongly disagree with you on this topic. I don't see Mangini/Tanny being rude to anyone. They are speaking. They just aren't "telling." There's a big difference. For the past few years, we have allowed the media to basically gameplan against us for our opponents. They have showed our weaknesses, and allowed everyone to exploit them. Now our reps are just saying what they feel is newsworthy, and keeping everything else under wraps. Do I think the running laps is a bit extreme? Sure. That's High School ball stuff. However, maybe that's what is needed around here. I see guys working their asses off on the field during games now. I, for one, am glad I don't have to hear about Ty Law taking naps during Monday meetings anymore. In the past 3 years, I don't think I have ever seen JMac make such an effort to actually catch a football. Sure, he still fails, but at least I feel more like it's a lack of talent than a lack of desire. SundayJack, that is fantastic! I love that scale! That should be the official TGG designation for crappy columns written by our less-than-average beat writers in this town. ScotlandJet, I have to say, that thing about football being second-class in NY is totally false, and is probably the most glaring misinformation spouted in the "article" (quotes are being used simply because this doesn't count to me as journalism.) I know many more people who are more passionate about football in NY than baseball. Actually, there are probably more people in NY who hate baseball than love it. I am a huge Yankee fan myself, but I know I am in the minority these days. Everything post-strike has given football the edge over baseball. Between the strike, the steroid scandal, the disparity of the luxury tax, the feeling that baseball is boring, people seem to be very disillusioned with baseball.
What he actually should have written was the following: Then I would have said he was at least sincere. He still sounds like a shithead from what he responded with.
Thanks for posting this. It makes me wonder who is putting the bug in his ear? Maybe someone from a different Jets site???
